Hi friends, it would mean the world if you supported our ability to keep making videos like this one and our fundraising efforts here through Seek Discomfort's new drop live now:
🌎 For US & Worldwide (minus Europe): www.seekdiscom...
🌍 For Europe: eu.seekdiscomf...
Thanks to our fantastic guide and friend Aya Salih @aya__0_0/@safraty__ for making that trip so memorable. Don't hesitate to reach out to her if you ever want to travel to Baghdad.
Then just a note from Thomas here, I am super grateful and humbled to have the ability to create and share stories like this one. I know this isn’t the most algorithm-optimized, easy to consume, but I do feel that we need more stories like this more than the mindless RU-vid challenge content. So I do hope it resonates with you and that it can, as I say in the video, build a bridge or plant a seed for empathy within us. I appreciate any and all of your support whatever it looks like from liking, commenting or buying some Seek, all of it goes a lot further than you can imagine. Much love to you all, see you on the next one.
Thank you to Aya for taking us, follow and contact her here:

I was an American Soldier, and spent a year in Baghdad from 2005-2006. Mostly in Karradah, Al-Dora, and Al-Kindi. I watched every minute of this intently, to see if I recognized anything. I spent many days on patrol in the back streets of those neighborhoods. I made many Iraqi friends, some are now here in the U.S. Others are dead, and I miss them dearly. Especially my good friend Ruqqaya Ibrahim, who we called "Sarah", She was one of my interpreters and was fearless on many missions. She died in 2017 and is missed by so many. I was an invader, but the Iraqi people were kind and warm. I cannot take back the reasons why I was there, but I learned much from the Iraqi people and was changed by my experiences. Thank you for this video. It brought back many memories.

I am 70. I am convinced that the people of the world are more alike than not. Yes, we come from different locations, we have different cultures , different biological markers but all that is surface level. What remains in the true human soul. What divides us ...is our leaders. They divide us with fear, lies, hatred, greed and violence. What if we got rid of all governments , each community weed out the trouble makers and we all learn to love and respect each other?

My reaction too. Imagine what would happen to the planet if the decisionmakers were women like Tomas’s guide. No child would go hungry, unhoused, unclothed or unsheltered. The elderly and infirm would always be provided for, and misbehavers would be recognized and nurtured during childhood instead of festering until adulthood.

I was deployed to Iraq in 2003. I spent the first 5 months in AL Hillah. I was fortunate enough to be able to interact with the local people on a daily basis. I became close with a few of them, but there was a mother and her young son who captured my heart. We didn't speak the same language and most of our communication was done through an interpreter. But they became family. On our last day in AL Hillah she brought her husband and daughters to see me. Her husband gave me a ring that he had been wearing & told me its to remember them.I wore that ring for almost 20 years before the band snapped. I miss my friends dearly & I think about them quite often. I have told everyone for the last 20 years that the people of Iraq are amazing people. They are warm, welcoming, and proud to share their culture. I had so many wonderful experiences in Al Hillah because of the people who lived there, despite the conflict that ravaged the country at that time. I wish someday I can go back. 🤞

I met a lot of Iraqi's during my time studying flight training in England in 2010-2012. I remember them till this day, for the friendly and kind hearts they have. From day one they treated me like a brother and have to say that I find them more pleasant than western people; no despite towards eachother, they act like one big family, they rooting for the best for you and no jealous behaviour. This video once again shows me that it wasn't just coincidence but the way they live life, and I really appreciate them for it.

I am a university instructor and writing consultant. The Iraqui students I taught and tutored were just lovely. Later, as a part of my ESL/TESOL training, we attended evening prayers at the masjid (mosque). An overwhelmingly Christian/other group, we were welcomed without hesitation. War and oppression are hideous, no matter who's doing it or who is inflicting them. Like people anywhere, the bad guys are a tiny percentage of a culture, but we shouldn't judge the entire country/group/religion based on those few.

I visited Baghdad 2 years ago now and for a long time I wondered if I was doing the right thing, I was on a quest to complete 100 countries before I hit 40 (Which I managed) and Baghdad was always somewhere that fascinated me so against all my friends and family who told me not to go I went. What an experience, By far one of the best countries I ever visited, No one would let me pay for anything, Taxi drivers taking me around the city and refusing payment. Friendliest people of the world and I am so glad a well established team went there to back me up and say that it was one of the friendliest and most fascinating places I have ever visited.

To be fair, anything is a step up from Denmark 😂. It's my least favourite country in Europe to visit. It's expensive, people are very cold and there isn't alot to do even in Copenhagen. I am Middle Eastern. It kind of makes me disappointed that so many beautiful places with kind people are not accessible to the rest of the world due to the warring nature of a few. There are also issues with the cultures and the people at large, and I can't defend some of those things, but it hurts when animosity between different groups of people is caused by a lack of direct cultural exchange. Thank you for doing this. Have only seen a bit of the video, but something in the intro set me thinking about this. Also, I love Kebabs!

Yeah I have really mixed feelings watching the Yezidi part. It's such a beautiful community and it makes me so sad that there's such a divide and destruction of culture by either prevalent propaganda or violent groups who don't represent us. I truly can't thank you enough for this. My childhood was spent in Baghdad, left when I was 12, I'm 60 now and have always longed to go back and this has made me determined to accomplish that. My face hurts from smiling throughout, I LOVE the Iraqi people and memories came flooding back. I need to find Aya to accompany/guide me! How can I find her? Thank you Thomas!

Great video. I had 4 of the best years when living and working in Baghdad and travelling to all parts of Iraq. That was back in 1986-90. After all they have been through it's great to see that Baghdadi hospitality has not changed.

Im in iraq right now. It’s my first time back in 14 years. I can promise you that no city on earth has the beauty and soul that Baghdad does. I pray to god that one day our generation can turn it back to what it used to be.

I’m Jewish from Chile, living in Australia. Thanks for this amazing video and showing us how great these people are. I would love to visit one day, all I want is peace in the middle east. I have talked with many people from Iraq here and everyone is lovely. Thanks for giving us a lesson of kindness and for showing us how these people truly are, not what the media try to make us think of them.

@@basmsworld5733 that is where you are wrong. I choose who I want to support, because there is freedom of speech, I was born with it. And whatever I believe in, or who I decide to support, shouldn’t make me a bad or a good person. You would already judge me based on who I support and be a bad person with me? Then there is something wrong with you and you missed the point of this video. Re watch it. Look at the kindness. No one is judging anyone or asking “do you support Israel?” They are better than you. Re check your values. Learn from the video.

Thomas. Thank you creating this story and sharing it with us. My eyes were glued to my screen for 53:07 minutes as I enjoyed every moment of your content. I spent a total of 24 months in Iraq between 2004 and 2007 as an US Military member and Iraq has always had a special place in my heart. Seeing the resilience of the Iraqi people in 2024 through your video brought joy to my heart and tears to my eyes. ❤ Zaeem, congratulations! Watching your wedding made me want to dance and smile! Aya, thank you for sharing your story. Your strength, courage and commitment to Iraq inspires me...Thank you!

I have traveled to so many places and experienced exactly the opposite: just love and acceptance. I joined the US Army back in October 2001, after 9/11, like many others, and I am thankful to God that I didn’t deploy to Iraq, bec I never understood why we invaded Iraq in the first place. The Bush administration, & The DOJ committed genocide in Iraq, and they must be held accountable for their crimes. God bless Iraq 🇮🇶
