Thanks for sharing this video, Josie! I am reminded of similar cultural norms in some parts of Pakistan - no filming of women, segregation of men and women, women not being able to walk the streets without a male chaperone, women in burqas… Like all other countries, Afghanistan is multifaceted and personally I feel that much has been said (and -importantly- continually said!) about the abuse of women’s rights, a tragedy for not just women but men too and the future of the country. Perhaps not enough is out there celebrating what is lovely and good in the culture. Just wondering - is your guide Hazara?

“Don’t judge from the media, see the reality yourself”. I want to see the reality of 50% of the population, the women. Will I see them living their only life full of adventure, freedom and joy? Will I see them having fun shopping around the streets, having a chat with their neighbours freely? Making decisions for themselves? Travelling freely? If that is what I will see then I will be very happy with Afghanistan and think it’s a kind, friendly place. But you can never be kind if 50% of the population is imprisoned and I will always wish for these women to gain their lives back from the evil that has infiltrated the country.

I had a few interactions. It’s illegal to film them like I said in the video and it’s illegal for them to speak to me. Some were brave enough to do so. But, I’m certainly not putting them in a video and risking their lives. As I said early in the video, one came over, dropped her covering, and spoke to me at length. It was very, very brave of her. I wish I could connect with them more too - the fact that I can’t, this is the issue. There are a few female interactions in this that I don’t show their face though. Most women seemed happy in family units, not so much in public.

Dear Josie, first of all thank you for this video. The men you have encountered so far were so hospitable and kind. I believe it must have been a wonderful experince and I was really moved when I saw with which ferocity and warmth they spoke about their country. And yet I miss Afghan women's opinions. It seems to me there are too many people speaking about them like what they do and don't want. Yet I think in a situation like this it is absolutely neccessary to hear their voices. I came back from my work. I don't have to cover my face in public, I can talk to people in public. I can marry who I want. I have my own financial income. I feel so torn. I am watching this video and I know women there can not do what I can on a daily basis. It breaks my heart. I believe there are lots of wonderful men in Afghanistan who really care for women and have good relationships with them. But on the other hand there also is and have been stoning of women for adultery. Forcing women into marrying somebody they didn't want to marry. They are denied education and now they can't even talk in public. I believe they must be of a really strong kind, because in such situation I wouldn't last a week. I do not write this out of hatred. I wish for people in Afghanistan both men and women to feel safe and free to do what they enjoy doing. I wish they had more options. I miss voices of Afghan women and their take on this situation and their day to day lives. But I also completely understand you didn't want to push it, I respect completely you didn't want to get yourself nor anyone else into a dangerous situation. I only needed to express what I felt. The men were going to great lengths to emphasise the importance of kindness to humans but where's the kindness to the Afghan women, to their own mothers, wives, sisters, daughters who are now silent prisoners of the Taliban regime. I remember, shortly after the Taliban took over again, an Afghan woman who was days from completing a double degree and her heartbreak that all her hard work 'had been for nothing' as she was forbidden from completing her studies. The helplessness the Afghan women must feel, for themselves and for their daughters, is heartbreaking.

Hi Julie. Afghan men do not equal the Taliban. There are hundreds of ethnic and cultural groups. These men are Hazara, one of the most persecuted by the Taliban. They have a long history of strong family and community units, and centre the woman at the head of the household. The enemy is the Taliban - not Afghan men. Men in Afghanistan run secret schools for girls, are arrested for trying to help them flee. Please don’t conflate the two. The men in Afghanistan are genuinely kind. The Taliban are not.

I am not so surprised as the reporter was struck by the spontaneous and genuine welcome of the locals: a type of welcome so warm that most Western countries can only very remotely imagine. To tell the truth, often most of these documentary genres, are built with a structure that creates a certain suspense towards those who watch the reporter as someone very brave who, entering the woods, sees that the wolf he expected to meet was not so much a wolf, but rather the opposite. Let's say that the documentary was starting with this trend, but the ending left us pleasantly surprised.

Hey there! Just to be clear because I've seen comments talking bad about islam and as a Muslim woman (studied sharia law and a lawyer), I'm telling you that the country and Taliban are violating the rules of islam and they have agenda in the name of islam. Just because one country is bad doesn't mean islam is.. We're allowed to study and work and everything (both men and women are obligated to study btw). The man is obligated to protect and provide for the woman or else he's a sinner (her father- brother - uncle - husband). The woman has her money only for herself and NO ONE can use it. The woman inherits more than a man in most cases and if the man inherited more money then he's obliged to provide to the woman and their children anyways. If they got divorced, he's still obliged to provide for her and her children until she's financially stable or married. Those the real rules in islam and i can go on and on 'cause there's still A LOT of rights for women. The first university was founded by Fatima Al-Fehri (A Muslim scholar woman). One of the greatest scholars in the Islamic history is Aisha-bint-Abibakr and both men and women were her students... Sending love to Afghan women and one day they'll be free from this prison. ❤️

First time viewer! Shout out to Josie for hitting so many good points. I am a tough critic of travel videos. And I long to visit the middle east - lovely to see your experience. Almost all travelers seem to say the middle east is the friendliest and generally safest, in terms of not being robbed or pic pocketed.

Honestly, the best hospitality I have had, and the friendliest people, have always been Muslim countries. Not just Middle East, but Brunei stands out as well for me!

I've had a lot of interactions with Arabs and I think Arabic hospitality really stands out, it's really remarkable. There's a culture of kindness and honor that I really find commendable. It's really only becomes a problem when you mix it with Islam. Add something that happens in this video is so common. Because she is not Muslim and not tide personally to any of them she is afforded a tolerance that they wouldn't offer a sister or wife, or even a resident, and because they feel that she is somehow exempt of the same harsh demands that Islam would place on their own women we instead see them revert to default Afghan Hospitality towards their fellow human.

This is horrible. A world without women and girls. This is how sad Islam is.

A beautiful video showing that the normal Afghan person is not the taliban but sadly that doesn’t detract from the regime these people live under and the dangers that these people live under.

OMG, I have so many thoughts in my head and so little time to write. You had me in tears through most of this video, I NEVER expected so much love and kindness for the Afghani people, especially the men! Thank you for reminding me that all is not what it seems in the media, just as you say, we all want the same things in life, and to show love and kindness to all. Thank you, Josie, I'm truly moved. Safe travels! Love from the US!

The media makes people think and believe in certain ways but the opposite is true! The concepts we have are formed by the media. I took a train in India, a 24 hours ride. When taking my seat I noticed I shared my compartment with 5 Muslim men from Gujarat in traditional dress. I felt so uncomfortable. But when the first chai was served and snacks were shared they were the kindest most humble people who made me feel even save. The entire journey they gave me chai and shared food. In the morning they even gave me their oil perfume for refreshment as they were applying before their prayer. It's sad to see the polarization.

Its nice and all that you went there and got to experience for 100hrs how it feels to be in Afghanistan. But i really dont get the parts where "dont trust the media" are being emphasized. No one in the west is saying Afgahn pple arent good people. The media and the west are just bringing into light whats life is like for afghans, especially women, under the Taliban. So i think your narrative, and the Afghans saying "dont trust the media" is extremely unnecessarily as people in the west arent saying Afgahn pple arent good pple or aren't nice and welcoming but are saying the Talibans aren't the good ones
