A look at 100 very obscure PC/MS-DOS games from the 90s; specifically, the games in this video were all released in 1991. If you played any of these, then hats off to you for being a PC superfan! Chunky VGA/CGA graphics, and Adlib sound OR PC speaker bloops and blips everywhere!
This video focuses mostly on "professional" games; mostly avoiding shareware/freeware/homebrew titles, in favor of titles that were sold boxed in stores.
There are a few licensed games on this list; while people are probably widely familiar with franchises such as Back to The Future III and Home Alone, it's interesting to note that the PC versions of these games were actually quite different than their console versions - and if you have played any of those console versions, it is interesting to see the difference!
Enjoy!

the fact that people put so much passion into making these games is whats great. some probably thought theyre games would get big, others just did it out of pure passion or side hobbies.

1990-1993 is a WILD era in gaming. You can see a mix of graphic styles, technologies, use of music and sounds... because things were moving incredibly fast. In 1993 the last ZX Spectrum games were co living with Myst and other CD Rom games. This is why you find such a weird mix in here.

And nowdays things aren't moving at all. The only reason people are forced to buy new hardware is game devs cannot optimize their stinking games anymore. That's a general issue with current gen coders.... who all think performance issues can ONLY be fixed by throwing more hardware at it.

Yeah, Supaplex!! A challanging and, for its time, well made puzzle game. Supaplex is now freeware. There's even an opensource port called OpenSupaplex, that makes it playable on Linux, Windows, macOS, PS2, PS3, Wii, ... In my opinion it's worth checking out.

Cool patreon Steamkey this time -- it's DARKWOOD, a 2017 top-down survival horror roguelike with interesting atmospheric cutscenes. 94% positive on Steam. Cheers, Gary! Really enjoyed this PC/MS-DOS video, though I must admit most of these games look more "interesting" than things I'd really want to play these days... especially compared to what 1991 was bringing on consoles. I love this kind of documentary tour through the past.

I was surprised to see several games here using CGA graphics, in 1991. I already knew that Monuments of Mars and Arctic Adventures used CGA, plus Dark Designs I and II, but I noticed three or four games posted here I never heard of from 1991 using CGA. I was certain CGA died out around 1989. There were more games that I thought still using EGA that year (even as late as 1993 with Dangerous Dave's Risky Rescue was still using EGA), but then I never owned a PC in 1991, I still had an outdated Atari 800XL and even more outdated TI-99/4A, so I didn't know about PC graphics. The big names like Sierra and LucasArts had gone VGA by then.
@GaryRetroGamer
@GaryRetroGamer 10 месяцев назад
VGA didn't really become highly prevalent amongst gamers until a bit later. You have to remember that at the time, VGA was still an option - and in the early 1990s, was still really expensive. 16-color EGA was pretty common place until 92-93 (which you'll see if you watch the other videos in this series). CGA was *mostly* done by this time; but you have to realize that for many smaller software companies (especially those without large development budgets) - CGA was the most affordable option. And also many people who bought PCs in the mid-to-late-80s were still using CGA. Yup, PC gaming has always been a clusterfudge of expensive upgrades!

woa wrath of the demon. I never thought of that game again until now. i kinda remember that i really liked it tho. saw a bunch of other games also that strongly reminded me of other games. Like that Elvira game that looks like Gods a little, one game looked like the blues brothers and one like Barbarian. Thanks for the upload mate. Really love this retro nostalgia.

Went through some of these too. Did stuck to Metal Mutant (graphic was amazing for the era, NB author misspelled second word in title - it is without trailing S), Grand Prix and Supaplex for a while. Remembered Baby Jo, Back to the Future, Home Alone as well. The good thing was that those games at begin of nineties was playable on almost any PC with VGA-compatible video card. Sound card was optional. Complete difference from today when many games are not playable without dedicated GPU that cost like used car.

Amazing video but I still can't find the game I'm looking for! All I remember was it was a 2D game where you played as a blue mask and had to navigate through a maze. Maybe it began with a X or a V or a Z. Any ideas?

I wonder... there's a game I played which I can't remember the name of. Does anybody know it? You start out by picking if you want to be a knight or a wizard and whether you want to wield a sword or a wand, then you're taken to a black screen representing an overhead view of a maze and you had to use the track ball to move in random directions until you uncovered a piece of maze that was accessible. So in this way you'd poke around in the dark to expand portions of the maze and explore them. Occasionally a new space would trigger a static image of a dragon or a troll or some sort of hazard... and I think he'd ask you a math question, and if you got it right, your character would kill the foe and you'd get gold? Then you'd go back to the map screen and keep exploring. It was a great game but for the life of me I cannot find it nowadays. I'm not even sure if it was a DOS game or an Apple game... all I know is it was on a computer. It was probably CGA graphics. The palette was pretty limited. But if anybody knows what I'm talking about, it should be added in a future video! It was one of the better games we had in school.

FYI, "Les Aventures de Moktar - La Zoubida" is based on a very famous song by a French comedian (then TV presenter): Vincent Lagaf ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-R9nV50YcfYY.html 😅 Also I used to play this on CPC if I can remember correctly.

I'm searching a 2d pc game about a guy (or a kid I barely remember the main character) who has to reach a goal every level avoiding obstacles. You had to click a Play button or maybe was a green flag to make him walk straight, you have to help him using a variety of items moving them to the scenario, like springs and platforms. It was fun, I hate that I can't remember the name of the game :(
