Why is kilowatt hours not a rate but an amount? I recognize that dollars per kilowatt hour is indeed a rate. I further recognize that If I use 2 kilowatts for 30 minutes and zero electricity consumption for the next 30 minutes that I've consumed 1 kilowatt hour of electricity. Is kilowatt hour not an [average] rate of use? I've been harshly scorned within an Ars Technica for saying that a car that travels 60 miles in an hour has a rate of 60 MPH but is likely not traveling a a constant velocity of 60 MPH every moment from departure to arrival. I tried to ask for an explanation there but was downvoted to oblivion. I'm an epidemiologist and understand disease incidence (number of new cases of a health condition per population in an interval -- usually a year) as a rate.
