Love the honesty Sam. I am sure someone at Ortur is watching this video and can't decide if they should be happy or upset. You gave an honest review and if I were in the market for this tool I would seriously considered buying this product. I would go ahead and change out the USB cable if there is any chance there might be a loose connection. Hopefully the price will be less than the price of another ruined piece of material.

I hope someone from the company sees this and listens. :) It would only help them develop a better product. That is also why I always tell companies I do honest reviews. I respect you guys (my viewers) much more than some company selling an item. :)

I've had random disconnects on my ortur laser master 2 and 3018cnc pro the issue is usually caused by 2 things: -electromagnetic noise around the USB cable and machine motherboard -voltage drop caused by the start of powerful machines around like a welder, table saw, strong hoover, or anything similar. To solve this problem you need to get a high quality shielded USB cable, get rid of electric motors, transformers, big cables from the area surrounding the machine- about 50in. Schould be enough. Sometimes motherboards are not capable of running every element of the machine at the full power and doing that might pull so much power that your power supply will reset, or your usb connection will. Running a 3018 in 3axes and running a spindle (powered up from the motherboard) almost always disconnected my machine from the computer. If your fridge compressor starts and you notice it breaks down the connection between the machine and the computer get an ups device and your good to go👍

I have the Ortur Laser Master 2 20W laser engraver. I was having a terrible time with disconnects on my machine and what I finally determined was causing the problem was that it would build up static on the machine while it was running. You can do a google search and find a grounding procedure that you can perform the will eliminate the disconnect issue. They sell a kit but I didn't buy it, you can get everything you need at your local hardware store. When I was having problems with the disconnects, I thought it was a communication issue as well but it was static. The problem would also not be consistent, so it was difficult to troubleshoot. When I first started to have problems with the disconnects it would happen occasionally and I learned to work through it, but it eventually got to the point that it would disconnect 20 or more times during one project. Since I performed the grounding procedure I have had zero disconnects on my machine. Hope this helps!!

PRO TIP: If you are using Windows (not sure if the Jackintush has this), Disable "USB Selective Suspend" in your control panel!!!!

Click Hardware and Sound, then click Power Options. Click Change plan settings for the plan you want to change. Click Change advanced power settings. Click the plus sign (+) next to “USB settings” and “USB selective suspend setting” to expand the options and change the setting to Disabled.
@WyMustIGo
@WyMustIGo 2 года назад
The USB selective suspend feature allows the hub driver to suspend an individual port without affecting the operation of the other ports on the hub. Selective suspension of USB devices is especially useful in portable computers since it helps conserve battery power. Many devices, such as fingerprint readers and other kinds of biometric scanners, only require power intermittently. Suspending such devices, when the device is not in use, reduces overall power consumption. More importantly, any device that is not selectively suspended may prevent the USB host controller from disabling its transfer schedule, which resides in system memory. Direct memory access (DMA) transfers by the host controller to the scheduler can prevent the system's processors from entering deeper sleep states, such as C3. NOTE: If you have a USB mouse or other USB (and sometimes Bluetooth), this silly "selective suspend" might impact the USB bus. ESPECIALLY on Laptops.

Great review, I've been in the market for an engraver and was leaning towards the Ortur, but I'm still not 100% on it yet. I've also thought about just splurging and grabbing a beefy CO2 laser so I can do cuts as well, but that's an even harder sell. On another note, it'd be interesting to hear about how things are going with your online business, excluding (or including if you prefer) the RU-vid side of things.

I would love a 2024 video like this. Maybe one where you highlight the top 3-5 lasers in the 500-1000 range. I want to do some of this both on wood, as well as the coaster/tumbler engraving. Cutting isn't immediate, but I'd prefer a buy once, cry once option where I could get into that. Would you suggest Ortur? XTool? I am not interested in a Glowforge.

ALL of these diode lasers with exposed frames are hobby level. Pro usually just gives you an external sd card reader and a stop button. These are also very dangerous as the laser that can blind you is exposed. One oops reflection and you could be done for. If your a business.. Buy a c02. It will cut easier and quicker. I find that with my atomstack.. I am needing so many upgrades.. I might as well get a c02

Hey Sam.. Just found ur channel tonight bro.. How good is this Shapokoe CNC man?? I'm in the process of building my own CNC. I bought all the Extruded Aluminium, I have the CNC kit with the shield, 4 Nema 23.s with the stepper drivers (TB6600) for each motor. I have the power source but somebody keeps telling me I need a VFD or variable frequency drive as well? Why would that be so important?? Do u know why I would need something like that my bro?? I'm going to spend the XMas hols trying to build this CNC router in my shop. I'm only beginning on the road with my CNC journey and I've only really known about CNC's over the past 5/6 months. I never heard of it before that. Am I taking on too much by trying to build it myself having no experience with electronics? I never had any experience with electronics before beginning a new job in this field 4 months ago. I am honestly saying I know little or nothing about the electronics side of CNC's but I'm beginning to learn fast now.. Would u suggest buying a fully made Shapokoe so I don't have to go thru the pain of my homemade build atm?? If u think so then how much does one of the good CNC routers like ur one cost? I was told it will cost me about 2500 euros to buy brand new?? That's a big outlay considering the size of it.. I got quoted 3000 euros by BLUE ELEPHANT FOR ONE OF THEIR DESKTOP CNC ROUTERS but the work area on the one they showed me was 1200x1200mm which is a very big space indeed.. Now that didn't include shipping which I might be able to get free but something tells me I won't.. LMAO.. That could mean another 3/400 euros on top which I wouldn't mnd but I want one ASAP so maybe one for abut 2k would be fine. Somebody told me they are not going to be using the belts drive anymore on their newest model? They're going all in on the lead screw design now?? That will be the upgrade of all upgrades if u ask me bcos the belts take a lotta work keeping the tension up to scratch all the time and I don't want to be worrying about that stuff at all.. My home build would be about 1000x1000mm working area which is massive compared to most of the entry level ones on the market so I may buy a small CNC just to get to grips with the software and the electronics and build ideas before going all out on my home built CN Sam.. Thanks for this brilliant video man.. Salute from Dublin, IRELAND! Also APOLOGIES FOR THE LONGWINDED COMMENT .. LOL

Idk if they fixed it in the pro version, but the regular 2 had a problem with shorting out in more dry climates due to not being grounded properly. It first showed up with frequent disconnects until a mosfet popped on the mobo and that was all. That being said, my Ortur has been well worth the price despite the issues since these machines are incredibly cheap for what they are.

Sam, Xtool has been advertising heavy lately and I was wondering if you have compared any of their "Pro" features to your laser? I don't mind (as much) spending 3 times the money if I know something is a better product (and better for me is customer and community support as much as the physical machine). The advertising makes the Xtool D1 sound amazing but that is what advertisers supposed to do. I have experience in woodworking and carpentry but know just enough about CNC and lasers to be able to spend a whole lot of money and not really be happy with my purchases. Any advice would be most appreciated.

Thanks Sam, just caught your video. I’ve not purchased anything yet, budgeting, you know how it goes. The pro explanation you give is a valuable insight. There really is enough “pro” in this model to justify the noticeable rise in expense from the first model. E,g. I have and use the reMarkable 2 tablet, very thin, very light, monochrome(look it up) and it costs more than the first version, but has many improvements over that first one. That this pro model ORTUR has only superficial upgrades makes me want to research and wait longer. I know for some folks 500 isn’t a big deal, it is for me. Looking forward to seeing your next set of “biz” talks on this device and profitability.

Great to watch a review of a product that is not 'geeky' and gets down to the facts right away. I was originally going to buy the original Ortur Master 2 but was holding out as I knew that the Pro was under development and was scheduled for release in March but was held back pending upgrades. As you said, the machine comes with all needed to get going and has upgrade parts for the likes of focusing, the air assist is something that makes work flow better and also minimises clouding of the lens and as you say needs to be addressed, the X axis issue can be resolved by using a wire hanger for the cable until Ortur come up with a cable handling system as on the Y axis.. Extraction is a necessity as you pointed out with the risk of chemical fumes from the materials being processed. My main interest is tile etching and the Ortur has been proved to be more than capable for this process as well as slate etching. You have convinced me that it is a worthwhile investment, many thanks!

I'm still in the stage of reinvesting as much as I can into the business for growth to accurately calculate my ROI for this machine. I can say that it's been a lower bar to achieve profitability of and fast turn around on products than the CNC thus far. But that also ties into my business structure of online fulfillment and shipping of items, so there are other factors at play. I am waiting to get another cheaper laser from a competitor and run it through the tests next. It has more bells and whistles on paper than this Ortur and is cheaper priced. It's not an exact comparison, but one that is interesting enough for me to test out and help others learn about before spending their hard earned money.

The big question is, what did you do to recover your project instead of scrapping it when you had a disconnect? I just returned a Comgrow 5 watt laser engraver because of the disconnects, or just plain lockups. It always happened on long projects after 2 hours. I never could get a long project to finish, but I did a lot of small ones OK. Like you I couldn't get a "resume" in light burn to work and it required me to reset everything to get it out of the lockup. If you would please share with us exactly what you did to recover from a lockup it would be greatly appreciated. With any type of a digital signal you defiantly want a USB cable with a choke on it. I will add to Hell Raiser comment: I would not be so concerned about interference jumping across the room - the signal is not RF, it is digital; however, I would run a Furman M-8x2 Power line conditioner and surge protector, or similar item. My guess is the power supply for this tool is a wall wart, which will not have any kind of a filter in it. Any noise present on the 120v AC line will be passed on through to the DC output of the power supply. The power supply and motherboard in the laptop will have plenty of filtering in them, but the Ortur Laser will not. An old power supply out of a desktop computer can be made to run the laser if you have one lying around.

Thnx for the review! I am considering in getting one to engrave on a 24cm x 28cm marine plywood mostly boards for abstract strategy games.....such as checkered boards or hexagon boards consisting of many hexagons and I was thinking whether this can be a good buy.... I am really tight on budget....and I am trying to get the most out of it....

@@Samcraftcom The model I just got says: "True 10W Laser Head Output Power: Ortur 2 Pro-S2-LU2-10A laser engraving machine equipped with 2022 Newly Upgraded 10W laser module, which adopts dual-compression diode technology to achieve true 10W laser power. Its cutting penetration and accuracy are twice of ordinary lasers which is able to cut 20mm wooden boards and 30mm acrylic sheets, it is almost beyond the effect of 60W CO2 laser. And the fastest speed up to 15000mm/min. In addition, the laser module has a built-in air-assist interface, which is designed for cutting." Was yours this one? I hope it will cut 1/4 inch wood OK. I haven't got it cutting at all yet. Waiting on replacement mother board. Thanks for the video.🙂

I know these two machines are different in their make up and purpose, how could you compare this Ortur Pro vs the Genmitsu Jinsoku LE-1620? If a purpose was to engrave coasters or wood, does it matter or is the Genmitsu better for that? Is paying $500 for the Pro overkill then? Unless you are doing more and more complex jobs, then maybe the Pro is the route to go. Your thoughts Sam?

I have to original ORTUR LM2 20 watt and now the LU2-4 long focus on order. Really happy with the original and it's still going after more than a year of heavy use. I will add that I have never purchased an item with pro in the name that actually was what I'd consider professional quality. It's just a buzz word.

This has been the most honest and straightforward review that I have ever seen. Thank you for your time in producing this video. I have subscribed to your channel. I am new to engraving, I want to buy a tool that I can engrave clear pictures on stone like granite for memorial plaques. Do you think this is that machine to do so before I spend my money? I look forward to watching all of your videos. Thank you

A very concise and honest video. I have been waiting for your review on this product. I have a Shapeoko XXL and went through the disconnect issues for about a month upgrading the USB connection, grounding it and everything else you could think of. Most of the disconnect issues were in the winter when the air in the shop is much drier. Of course that was running a CNC with all of the EMI that is possible, not sure about a laser engraver. As for spending the $500 for the machine you bought a dump truck for $2,000 without telling your wife so I am sure she would have been fine with $500 :) again great review, I may have to buy one now.

Hahahaha indeed I did... but I also learned my lesson... Hahaha Sit tight on your money for a little longer. There's a cheaper laser I'm waiting to get to test for another company. It has more bells and whistles on paper than this one, but we'll see how it really performs.

Get a USB cable with the filter on it. Next be sure that all the power setting are set to performance and that the USB port does not sleep. Check and see if you need the static fix for your machine. Like you videos!

My 2 cents..from a laser master 2, 20 w, You need a computer to run it. I bought a kids laptop from Best Buy, a KANO. I think that's the name. About $200. You need laser burner software, like Lightburn. ($40 ). There is GRBL? free. Big learning curve for me at age 65, but ok. You have to import B&W photos or schematics, drawings, some will need to be worked on for cropping, contrast. Some fixes to graphics can be done in Lightburn. I have tried color photos. More settings to learn so the color photo burns correctly to B&W. It can work. Lots of different shading settings. I have learned a lot from youtube, Lightburn people. Some folks are getting 2 colors on tile by spraying 2 colors of paint and just burning through the top layer. Sealing the paint on the tile after cause that method is not permanent. Image will wash off with solvents. Norton method actually melts the paint into the tile surface. Use white gloss paint for black image on tile. Burning paint with a laser creates some bad fumes. I burnt some wood with the laser too. Wrong power setting for cedar. Not what I intended. Make a good exhaust system and wear the laser goggles. I have green, then went to the dark orange color for the frequency of light from a blue laser. I just burned a "Merry Christmas" on a white tile using off white paint, 1200 speed at 45% power. Came out good! Ok, I talk too much.

sounds like the mainboard is being overloaded by too many commands , 32 bit board or hardware offloading to a rasberry pi with something like octoprint would fix that. could be just the tablet/usb but sounds like its skipping lines of codes running too fast

Hello...So I have an LU1-3 and pretty sure it is a 15W. If there is no height adjustment, then what is the optimum distance for a perfect beam on the material? The fixed distance to the board I have it mounted to or have to play with the speed and power?

disconnects can also be caused by poor grounds. You need to make sure the laptop/computer are using the same grounds. Meaning plug both into the same outlet and you can also ground the system as well.

I love the "after good amount of use" review. Much better than just out of the box. The cable management issue makes me a bit less enthused but it didn't seem to dissuade you from using it - and giving it a permanent home, so I'll likely pull the trigger about a month after I get a CNC in... after the shop construction is done (hopefully in a month or less!) Keep the videos coming!!!

I don't like doing (or watching) the unboxing videos either. It's something I'm going to get away from... no tool reviews until I've used them at least a month! :) Cable management is annoying with this one, but can be fixed if I would just buy a drag link or something. :) Shop build?!?! Saweeeeet!!! There is a shop build in my future (not been mentioned on this channel at all yet)... I both dread and look forward to that one. :)

@@Samcraftcom It is, for the most part, an exciting and very rewarding experience. I'm about two months behind schedule largely due to a labour shortage... it is a dog eat dog world out there right now and getting skilled help to do something as simple as framing was a massive challenge! Here's hoping things end smoothly and that when you get around to it, supply costs are at a decent prices too!!!! I can't wait to see what you have in mind (32x16 here).

Well done, Sam. "Hippocracy abounds" ...🤣 $500.is a mighty step for an unknown product with an untested venture where money is limited and definitely needed. Yeah, I'm not one who'd buy it there either. I'd play on the edges with an "El Cheapo" baby first or some such if I had a hankering but ... it'd never skate into the car payment range until I was dang sure...

Ensure you run it on a filtered and regulated power source. The commercial equipment suppliers I dealt with require filtering and power regulation. Also ensure wires are channeled within a grounded RFI protected sleeve not exposed to potential stray RF sources like an very close WIFI system, 2 way radios or other not too distant sources that have arcing like bad relays, welding etc. Exposed wires can potentially be receive antennas for noise sources.

I changed my usb and designed a wooden block to glue the usb onto the machine. It's made the amount of disconnect drop from 5 a week to about one. Air assist ruled. Reduces lens cleaning by at least a third.
