100 Year Old Vacuum / Carpet Sweeper Restoration (Remaster?)

Been working on this restoration for a while. It was challenging and time consuming. Sorry for the large upload gap; I'm still alive.
This thing is a marvel of early 20th century engineering. I spent hours trying to find another one made by the same brand online and couldn't find anything. It's a mechanical bellows powered suction + carpet brush sweeper. Incorporating actual vacuum technology along with the sweeper, this thing was truly ahead of it's time.
During this restoration I re-engineered / re-mastered a lot of the original designs so it's not really a restoration as many smart people in the comments will probably point out.

At first I thought to myself "God, I hope this ends up in a museum, it really deserves to be there and to be preserved and admired by the future generations". And then I realised - it really doesn't matter at all. Because this is the museum. This video - all the intricate details, hundreds of hours of painstaking work by a master of many crafts, little, minuscule things that nobody would ever notice if this was to be exibited - all of that is here. It doesn't need a museum to be appreciated by millions - and millions are yet to come to enjoy and admire this masterpiece. I congratulate and I envy you for all the things you are capable of. I salute you, you really are a genius at work.

I watch A LOT of restoration videos. This has to be one of my favorites of all time! I have never seen a person with THIS many different skill sets. I saw metal fabrication, woodworking, refinishing, 3D printing, sewing, body work, and graphic design, just to name a few. You Sir, are an incredibly talented person and a Jack of all trades. @@TheParkAttendantI’m considered “old” in my work environment, even though I’m only middle aged, and believe me the younger ones aren’t wowed by our ability to run rings around them. They are only too happy to slack off and let us do the stuff they are too lazy to do. They also don’t appreciate or respect the wisdom and knowledge that we have attained during our working lives. And here I am like a fool fixing up all their mistakes and doing the jobs they were too lazy to do, because I have that work ethic instilled in me. Carpet sweepers still exist! Though nowadays they're much harder to find (and made with a lot more plastic). I've only used them a few times, because a few of the stairways I cleaned had carpet landings but no electric outlets for the vacuum cleaner we'd usually have for carpeted stairs. They're less effective than a modern vacuum cleaner, but very lightweight (modern ones at least) and very quiet. They're kind of being phased out though. A colleague that used to work at a larger cleaning company told me that they had invested in lightweight battery-powered vacuums that could be carried as backpacks for when they had to negotiate the lack of electrical outlets. With that kind of competition it's hard to find a use for carpet sweepers, since they're about as effective than raking the carpet with a stiff-bristle brush

@IratePuffin
@IratePuffin 9 месяцев назад
@@barcodenosebleed5485 so, because he had to replace pieces of it, it’s somehow inauthentic? Come on… why so bitter? It was a good restoration and I, for one, enjoyed it. I could understand the disdain if this was one of those restorations that’s obviously faked, but it’s not. Maybe you didn’t find it entertaining but a lot of us did and… shocker…some of us even left a comment saying so! Ngl, I honestly think it’s sad that you would read nice comments and automatically be suspicious. Idk how jacked up your life has to be if people being nice seems “off” or fake to you. You’re suggesting that the channel owner is either using a bot or paying thousands of people to leave positive comments. Why would they do that? I mean, I know some channels do but this guy doesn’t have to do that. He is skilled and does really nice work that many, many people enjoy watching. He doesn’t need to fake it. Besides that, not only is it against TOS, but RU-vid regularly scrubs for fake subs and comments. So he’d just be throwing money away because the comments and fake subs would be deleted anyway. Sure, it would help his initial engagement and the algorithm would temporarily boost him but it would be counterproductive since he’d be risking losing his channel entirely. Tbh, even if he is using a bot to increase his engagement to play the algorithm so he can make more money… so what? Does it even really matter? He’s providing free entertainment to millions of people who enjoy it so maybe just watch it and move on instead of spreading negativity for no reason. Just watch the free entertainment and let the guy get paid, ffs. It’s not like he’s hurting anyone. 🙄 I hope this is lucrative for him because I appreciate being able to watch his videos for free. Let him make money so he has the incentive to continue. There aren’t many hobbies that you can get paid for and he was smart for figuring out how to get paid for his. So go ahead and dislike it, but can you just let everyone else watch and leave nice comments without feeling the need to make others feel stupid for doing nothing more than being nice? If the comments are fake, then good for you. You got it all figured out, buddy. Congratulations! I guess that’s a real achievement.

I wasn't going to be able to look away from you doing this! In 100 years, they still haven't figured out how to build a vacuum cleaner to suck up wood chips!

Beautifully restored. It may have seemed a work a day cleaning implement but when you see its construction it really is a complicated gizmo. Hats off to the inventors who figured it out.

After doing some home work on the Sweeper . It is very rare , And deserves to be in a Museum . Rev-O-Noc manufactured many items . Guns, wood plains, fishing reels and more . What a beautiful job you did on this fine collectable . I am proud of you !

They still manufactured similar designs in the 70s. We had one when I was a kid, and the truth was you were better off with an ordinary broom - better results for less energy spent. It's just one of those things that looks better in theory than it is in practice. The restoration was A+ though.

I LOVED watching this! While we don't see your face, I can sense from your editing that you enjoy the challenge of testing yourself with each project. I'm a knitter and try to teach myself something new with each garment, and I sense you're constantly widening your own skill set. Watching this was such a journey. I do find myself wondering about how many tools you've learned to use-- so much going on!

My entire life, I've always thought to myself. When old things like this get brought back to new life, they secretly smile and feel good. Probably cry a little when no one's watching.

Damn! Really impressed by this build, well, and all of your other ones too! Such an Incredible amount of work went into this and the result was amazing. I really liked the fact that you kept and reused what you could, but innovated and used newer technology to create replacement parts that looked nearly original. You have some very serious skills my friend.

The closest I have ever seen any restorer come to "My Mechanics". An excellent video, demonstrating craftmanship, engineering, welding, CAD, video and editing skills. My only suggestion is to invest in a mill for your lathe.

It's a miracle that you are able to take this old vacuum in rusty, filthy shape and transform it to brand-new. It probably is better now than it was a hundred years ago. The vaçuum now has been transformed into a piece of art. You do beautiful work. I enjoy watching you work. All your modern machines that help you do what you do are amazing too. Thank you and can't wait to see all your videos. Your friend in Florida, Ruth. 😊

I’ve seen a few of these in antique shops and always wondered what they may have looked like brand new. Now I know. Great restoration/ reconstruction! It may not have done a great job picking up the dirt but I’m sure to many back in that time it was better than a broom or taking the rug outside and beating it on a clothesline. We’ll done Sir!

*This is very next level work. One can only imagine who the original owner was. Most likely someone very wealthy because this, back when it was originally made, this gadget probably cost 6 month's wages, for most people. Serious question, at what point does it stop being a restoration and turn unto a recreation?....P.S. The Bates Motel Scissors are a nice touch. I can't help wonder how many viewers got the reference...Rev-O-Noc made everything from fishing reels to fire-arms. Butcher's Scales to wood working tools to apparently, first class floor sweepers. They even made Golf Clubs....I'm guessing Sears & Roebuck probably put them out of business with their mail order*
