The first Multi-Mile drive of the Subaru engine converted VW Bus. It's a 1973 Type 2 with a Subaru SOHC 2.5 and Subaru 5 speed transmission with cable shift setup. The journey is from Durango, Colorado to Monterey, California - about 1,000 miles. A couple things happen along the way but overall a VERY good drive.

excellent! It's always issues in Kingman, AZ. Last trip from California to Grand Canyon in 5/2019 resulted in a stop in Kingman to fix calipers (still on original 2L aircooled)

Sounds like you had a great learning trip! Can you give us more details of your clutch linkage modification? Thanks I have pulled the engine out, trying to find out why my clutch pops and comes out of adjustment. The only thing I see is a little wearing on the clutch forks. I am going to replace it with a new heavy duty cross shaft clutch fork and bushings. I been thinking about not putting the KEP stage one pressure plate back in and using the stock plate. Do you think the stock plate will work ok? It worked great with the with the 1.8 VW flat engine. Thanks for any help I am at a complete loss of what to do!

+James Groves I put stock clutch equipment in mostly. I seem to hear a lot of issues with "performance" clutch equipment. If you are building a racer then you'd want to go that way but not for the family van - at least in my opinion.

Actually, he swapped the stock gearbox for a Subaru 5 speed transmission.

+Graham McMahon Not often, I run belly mount sometimes but like the simplicity, protection, and ground clearance that the engine bay rads provide.

Awesome work, you are the reason i got myself a 75 baywindow. So is it just easier to swap Subaru enjine with its transmission than getting a kennedy adapter plate and mountung to vw trans?

+Jaime Flores it's much easier to swap using the VW transmission. The Subaru transmission is a fantastic upgrade to drivability though.

Having just done a 74 Bay with a dual carb'd crate motor and freeway flyer trans, I can honestly say I wish that I'd gone the Subaru route.

+Jaime Flores Much easier and less expensive to use the KEP adapter plate. The Subaru transmission is extremely smooth though.

What was the problem with the front brakes?

+Kevin Hornbuckle The brakes were upgraded I believe, and would make contact with the rotor at random times. It didn't seem to be related to how often they were used or what speed you were traveling.

If you weren't using the brakes, but they started making noise that subsided after a cool-down, then I would suspect bearings. If the rotors started warping under heat, without use, then the heat has to come from somewhere. I would suspect the bearings.
