I don't think the macro mode is gimmicky, I work with small animals and i love taking close up macro photos of them. I have a collection of baby lizard macro photos.
@@Farquad76.547 a gimmick is something that doesn't really serve a function other than to gather attention. My use case might be niche, but the use case of "taking detailed photos close up" is certainly pretty broad for a wide segment of users.
i feel the audio eraser requires more appreciation than just. "fine" :) i'm sure there would be a same video calling it ground breaking when apple does this in 7 years :-)
I agree. Obviously Becca, with her vast video experience, will find a consumer grade slider for noise reduction "fine". The level of control in software like Adobe Audition, etc is extremely powerful in comparison. But the Pixel's audio magic eraser, with its ability to easily dial background or other unwanted noise up and down, is more than fine. For the masses, it's amazing. I think a lot of people will find this really useful or certainly fun to play with.
Yeah, Becca was a little more critical in her tone for this review than usual. She didn't even mention the improved low light performance across all 3 sensors nor the improved selfie performance for the Pro. Both of these make the 8 Pro a significant upgrade over the 6 or 7 series.
Standard iPhone photos have yellow and green hue over them. It's a well known fact. Front facing cameras cannot get the skin color right. I'm just confused how someone so experienced says that Pixel is struggling with color accuracy while iPhone isn't.
As a photographer these are the tools you want. In my opinion you are wrong when you say iPhone 15 has better colour management? There are lots of professional reviews out there thats say otherwise. Take for example dxo mark.
I tested the iPhone 15 pro Max for 2 weeks before returning because the colors were terrible compared to my pixel 7 pro. Skin tones were especially (and consistently) bad. Excited for my new 8 pro to show up today.
I'm surprised Becca didn't mention the fact that it now has Ultra HDR as well as P3 color! But you have to be viewing the photos on the Pixel 8 Pro itself, a lot of other devices and apps won't show either
This was a fantastic (!!!) review of the camera system. I'm literally sitting on my couch waiting for UPS to drop off my P8Pro any moment now. This was a great, comprehensive review, keep it up!!
Watching this video from Pixel 8 Pro that I picked up today. I upgraded from Pixel 4a 5G and was worried about the size of the 8 Pro. But so far so good. Yes it is a big phone, however it sits pretty well in my hand. There is, of course, so much to test in this phone, it will take me few days to just have a proper impressions.
How is this editing any different from what people have been doing for years on photoshop? Sure its more accesable but not like bad people wanting to do "bad" sat back waiting for this feature to one day enable them. Social media like facebook is already full of total junk. In the mean time the rest of us that just want a nice pick of friends or family without the random guy in the back that just does not want to get out of the shot, can now just remove him...doesnt make the photo any less of a reality
These are always fun. I find the Pixel really consistent at color, most specifically, white balance, it seems very predictable in fact sometimes too accurate, when you have an rgb light as a primary it balances it so much that it basically cancels the color cast, I kinda hated that but now with manual controls that won't be a problem 😉
Honestly can’t wait to test the 8 Pro. It’s such a bummer that Google doesn’t officially sell it here (Dubai) and I need to wait a few days longer to import it. 😢
Funny I think the Pixel video looks better than the iPhone in your examples? I think it's the first time that the pixel is better all around than most phones. Not perfect in every area but overall I think it's the best at most.
Yeah agreed. The displays on the 8 &8 Pro also got the best display award from Dxo. The brightest screens on the market, with the best cameras and best AI. These phones are damn good.
I looked at the side by side videos in person on a 4k screen, the pixel has improved a lot but it's still behind the iPhone with video quality, how it handles exposure, zoom transitions, higher resolution cinematic mode, and the iPhones ability to shoot in Pro Res Log. I'm not taking away from the Pixel, but technically it's not true.
I can see you have never met a pixel you liked. Why have your channel, just say the iphone's great so forget everything else. I wonder why so many professional photographers disagree with you?
1:45 the building looks so tilted and weird on the iphone 15 pro max. the face looks very orange on iphone 15 pro max video, 3:14 i would choose the pixel photo over iphone even if the colors aren't realistic because the colors look better than real colors.
I think the big thing about 8 pro personally is all about that locally processed AI with tensor g3. A lot of downloaded AI tool apps are all processed on the cloud.
First review I've seen from Becca and you absolutely crushed it. Top-notch all the way through. I will definitely be checking out more of your content.
For low light video performance, google has been toning down the amount of temporal noise reduction because it leads to motion artifacts in low light where a higher ISO is used.
Incredibly thoughtful review as always! I’m shocked more phone companies didn’t try to replicate the “Magic Eraser”. It’s simple, but incredibly effective. Google has AI on their side like no other brand. As an 15 Pro Max user, it should be coveted as iMessage is.
Samsung has "Object Eraser" which does the same thing. Also erases shadows and reflections. I believe the feature came with OneUI 5.1, though I'm not 100% sure. Idk how it compares to google's magic eraser, but it's pretty good.
The purpose of these companies to introduce macro mode is the main lens is not able to focus all parts of the subject to focus. As lens getting bigger and larger sensor gives more shallow depth and defocusses the subject away from the centre. Hence companies have to crop the ultra wide lens to bring the macro focus. The picture appear stretched and doesn’t give the correct aspect ratio. Pixel phones focus is much better indeed. If you try to use iPhone 13 onwards and S20 onwards , you will notice a blurry image when you take a pic of a text book page with letters. So smartly they introduced the crop of the ultra wide sensor and call it a macro photography. It’s not a dedicated macro lens. If you could add a macro lens to the regular wide lens the image looks stunning. I use it all the time. The problem is we have to carry the lens kit all the time! Hope a dedicated macro lens comes soon!
@@brianmccaig yeah Im using Pixel 7 Pro for a year now. But my roommate using S23 Ultra. Day to day usage S23 Ultra Shines with Better Battery, Better UI and smooth overall
All those photos, and yet not a single indoor low light picture of a person. All those photos and not a single attempt at taking a picture of a child, one of them most difficult things in the world to capture correctly on a smartphone camera. All those photos...of random, inanimate and useless things like plants and buildings don't do anything to show off the cameras actual capability. No one buys a camera to take pictures of plants or brick buildings. People buy the camera to take pictures of themselves and their friends doing fun things in imperfect and random lighting situations. Each and every one of these camera "reviews" are so disingenuous and vapid.
I found it disgusting that the pixel 6 didn't have full manual when every LG flagship did, I'm glad Google FINALLY decided to let US decide how to take a photo. Now if only the focus highlight of the lgg8 will come to other phones...
Brooklyn definitely has a winner with 9 DeKalb! Probably one of the prettiest buildings in all of NYC. I’m gonna be sad when it gets overshadowed by a taller uglier skyscraper in the next decade or so.
Thank you for your honest take on this phone. I have the same gripe about the color shifting when I'm taking photos. Depending on the light and how it's reflecting off my floor or walls the colors will shift towards a really warm tone which drives me nuts!!! I have to change my angle or change the white balance. But with kids they don't always sit still long enough for me to change those settings.
I want to switch from iPhone 15 Pro to Pixel 8 Pro to try Google I mainly use the camera in the phone and battery life is important as well, do you think it makes sense?
Was this review done during the embargo with pre-production software? Surely this was done afterwards for the solid end user results. 1000 pix in 2 days is insane 🤯📸
Great review, and I watched on my 8 pro. Sure, it's an older review and they have night video now, and faults are fixable with software updates, which is good. Nothing wrong with your analysis. I also enjoy some of the same photography as you and I'm also interested in Gemini and gaming a bit. Plus the call screening and I want to try Duplex sometime. 🍻
Whenever the verge reviews an Android device, they try their hardest to micromanage every little thing and even make the title of the video sound crazy. Also could have just said reviewing the Google pixel 8 pro I mean but whenever review Apple devices. Oh everything is all good and everything is fantastic. And you know everything is good so that's why I don't watch The Verge like I used to
I like what Google is doing in the Pixel series. I agree with the idea that still remains uncertain what could be done with erasing and changing faces and places, moreover with fakes. But the most I would like is Google to keep on making more pro stuff for photo and video mobile. And also to release the PRO mode in Pixel 7 Pro.
You failed to mention Google got rid of 360 Photosphere...huge mistake and horrible of them not to mention it. Also Night Sight for photos does not work. This phone was released half baked... contemplating returning it
It's only me who liked Pixel's pictures and videos more than the iPhone? The magic audio eraser was spot on and she just said "It's fine". This review looks biased to me.
Gosh I have seen most pixel 8 videos and 95 percent of the content is about the camera. Wish they would put more time and effort into things that are more important than the camera. One is the connectivity. Two is the battery life. A phone with inconsistent and drop connection is a worthless phones. Hate seeing that "!" from time to time.
If Apple releases a similar feature you guys start to jump but if google does it then “it’s fine” . Even I use an iPhone but I think these “professional” reviews should be as unbiased as possible
I bought this phone because Becca said it had a "full frame" at the start of the video. I thought se meant 35mm sensor. There is not. Shes lied. Do not trust this review!.
The verge lets anybody do reviews now this is a terrible review very uninteresting and really the reviewer does not know what they are talking about, macro mode is not gimmicky...
Why is The Verge so hell bent on trying to convince people the iPhone is better than Android phones? There's always a comparison with iPhones in their reviews.
