As requested by a couple guys a little more info on my car and a few pulls toward the end. On low boost, pump fuel and meth. Sorry about my video making skills they are a work in progress.
Thanks, I feel the same way about it. Its been a work in progress for a long time and as all projects it will never really be done. Hope you stick around for the whole ride.
I’m 15. Looking at what I want for my first car, looked at a Mk3 Supra and can’t get over it lol. Stumbled over this video. Making me wanna buy this car even more. Cannot wait. Thank you random mk3 Supra guy on the internet
Duane is a cool dood for sure, He is still pretty invested in the car even at this point and helps with a lot of things. Maintenance, upgrades and so on.
Always loved this car, shame Duane deleted his old thread. Watching and listening to this video, it sounds like it has found a great home. Look forward to seeing more.
You will see more of it for sure. Its not going anywhere, Ill bring you guys along for the journey. If there is anything you want to see in specific let me know. I'm all about sharing the car with everyone.
@@DanaAnthonyHoeft cranky old man stuff, I love my 7mgte too, really digging the 300°cams in yours, having a rebuild done atm and going to drop in custom 280° cams and Carrillo pistons etc etc.
Love it! Gave you a sub. Soon I will be getting a camera and some go pros so I can start recording my cruises and me working on my supras. Really want to document my 1uz swap into my mk2 to help everyone else out that are taking on the same project. Several people have posted their finished cars, but never go into detail on what's involved in the swap.
Thanks for the support buddy. Definitely get a camera and make some videos. Tones of mk2 guys out there that I'm sure would love too see someone turning some wrenches, especially something as unique as a 1uz mk2.
@Dana-Anthony Hoeft Yes sir, that is a hellacious MK3. And pretty clean too. I want to get a N/A 7M one and destroke it so i can rev it to like 9000 lol
My dad had a NA 7M Mk2 when I was very young, and I've recently fallen in love with the Mk3. Absolute dream would be to get a good condition one with the automatic, do the essential head gasket and bolts, a nice exhaust, and have a very nice comfortable car for blasting highways and rolling down local roads.
Oh man they are the ultimate cruiser with an auto, I have had a few turbo auto's and loved them. Guys hate on the autos but in the 1/4 they are way more predictable and out for a cruise they are the only way haha. Rowing gears constantly with a crazy clutch takes some enjoyment out of the occasion
I live in the same city too! I'm buying an 88 supra with a stock 7M-GTE. The only shitty part about it is that it's an automatic :/. $7,600 good deal or?...
Thanks man, all belt moldings and glass trim was all bought new from Toyota when the exterior restoration was done in 2008 (only rear left belt molding had to be repainted and used) Id imagine they are discontinued parts by now
Yeah man, Cant wait to see what kinda power it ends up making. Im excited to see the video for sure. Ill send you a message on FB lol I need to know more haha
whatever happened to CFx company? seemed like a great company back in the day, i know i message a lot on your videos and repeat myself but at least i have the carbon fiber targa from him back then. i have so much body work to do on my 89 being it was a northern Indiana car and rust attacked the rear fender wells and gas tank area. your lucky to have a beautiful car in Canada, to this day i remember talking to him on the phone back in 05'-06' when i posted pics of magazine he was featured in back in the day (thats how i met duane), never met him in person or the car but my bucket list in life includes to meet either you or duane but most importantly the car that inspired us all! I am still a strong believer in the underdog 7M series and cant wait to get my first car back after being in the military service these last 14yrs.
No worries I like talking with you guys. Don't feel like you comment too much. CFx went under for a few reasons, mostly the cost to buy quality material to manufacture products for customers. Good material (carbon and so on) was much more expensive back in the day. CFx didn't want to manufacture on par products to match the market. CFx wanted to be a step ahead in quality/ fit and finnish. It proved too expensive to offer such high quality products and rather than using a lesser quality material the company closed its doors with its integrity and values intact. A bit of a story I know but that's how it went down.
@@slightlyinsaneraf Yes sir you dont need a crazy car to have a good time honestly on the cars pump gas tune 18 or 23 psi is fun. any more boost than that and it gets crazy sketchy. Will lay patch at 200km/hr on its high setting (40 psi) and thats just a waste of hp. Its not usable hp for the cars configuration.
@@DanaAnthonyHoeft I can imagine, I heard many stories saying how after 600HP Supras don't really get any faster on the street due to lack of traction. It's fun to have 1000HP and know that you can use it any minute, but for street, I think 500 is just perfect amount in RWD! I only have 200HP and it's pretty fun for it being a Honda and FWD! Corners well, but it could do with 100 more tbh 😅
Thanks, I keep it clean everywhere, cleaning the car is as much fun for me as driving it. The oil catch can is routed from the top of the can into the bottom of the intake pipe. Kinda hidden away but its there. Good eye, I haven't had that question yet
@@DanaAnthonyHoeft Nice. I am currently in the process of a oil catch can setup on my built 7m and I am still stuck between venting it or routing it back to the intake. I know I am going to run an10 lines to the valve covers but there is a lot of options for oil catch cans and different set-ups. Thanks again.
Honestly I would go with a vented unit but the real plus of routing it back to the intake would be less oil residue under hood. Makes it a little easier to keep clean. The plus of just having a vented can to me would be one less hose under hood to worry about hiding.
That would be awesome my Mk3 interior is mint I wanted to relocate the battery plus meth kit and I was looking how to install them without hacking up the rear
Haha probably irrelevant pointing this out now but, the front rotor that you shown us is installed backwards, the way that it is installed is in fact sending heat in towards your hub under braking. Great build btw, not knockin it, just pointing somethin out.
I know it’s an older video but thought I’d still ask the question, what standalone ecu did you go with?? Looking at picking up a 7M Mk3 Supra that has a MAFT-Pro on it to run larger injectors (a little sketchy in my book) and was planning on going stand-alone with it. Anything you recommend?
Check out my 7m budget build v-logs lots of good info there too, My car runs on a motec ecu, Id recoment AEM EMS V2, cost effective, parts are everywhere and tuners are plentiful
This is really cool! How much was the car when you first got it and how much did you put into it? I am trying to find one of these cars, but the only luck I am having is the 7m-ge motor that i can afford. Is there any advice you can give me when i start building one up?
I posted some videos on a budget build and na-t stuff as well if you are going from a ge to gte. you can find them on my channel. I spend way to much on this car and I have spend way to much on this car. I wont even put the figure out there haha.
@@DanaAnthonyHoeft I can tell just by looking at what you have done. I want to do the same to a car as well. I will continue to watch your videos, but I do not think the gen 3 supras are worth what people are trying to sell them for.
Axles are stock. One went out on me not long ago but it seems they are reasonably reliable north of 1000 whp. With 7-800hp they are dead reliable as long as your not wheel hopping
All depends on tire size... these tires aren't stressing the axles. An 800hp anything and 345 tire will break most axles (especially on a prepped drag strip,) but would never break axles on a 225 tire.
So I have no idea how to guage this kinda question since inflation occurs every couple months now apparently but... Let's say hypothetically you put aside all sentimental value of this car, how much would you sell it for and be happy? And I mean realistically. Thank you for your time I am in love with your car
Not a question of money, more the right owner. Back to money, I would say make me an offer I cant refuse. Its impossible for me to put a value on the Supra.
Q45 TB, Think you need 4runner throttle cable to go FFIM on the 7m. check the fourums to make sure. For sure a write up or two out there on Supraforums.
Good question. Stock pump but the piping in the pan was redone with parts from arizonaperformance I believe. I've put together 8 of these cars over the years in all kinds of combinations I could be mistaken on the parts and I didn't personally build this engine, but I'm 95.62% sure that is the set up.
Is it the stock gearbox? (The R154) or have you changed it. Same with the clutch? How much have you changed with the motor? I’m gonna get one of these in a few months and I want about 400-450 hp. But I don’t know much about how much power the stock motor and gearbox can take before quitting life.
Stock trans clutch is a tripple carbon from tilton. I did some build vlogs stock - 400whp and upward from there, what youll need, whats not needed and what kind of a budget you and get away with.
How much did he sell you this car for? Literally my dream car, some people want Lambos some people want classics and lowriders (which is awesome too) but me personally, 89 hardtop Supra is all I've ever wanted. Bless this car
Just a standard set, They are quite sturdy 8740 chromemoly , L19 would be a nice upgrade but I am unsure at what point it would actually be needed. being that the car makes in excess of 1000 at the wheel and has for years. I will replace them with L19 studs when I pull the engine but more so for piece of mind I think.
Hey, I might buy one for 1,800 but it needs some work, which I am down for. it comes with a built 7mgte and the stock block. its an 88 Targa top turbo . Just wanted to see your opinion
Everyone has to start some where. If you trust the seller you cant go wrong. 1800 bucks is a fair deal for a project I think. But, don't rush into a project if your uncomfortable. Ive been there too haha
Is this a good first car stock? I’m looking at JDM cars for a first car, and I definitely like the mk3 Supra turbo, but just wondering if the 7mgte is reliable
2 things, (1) Have the head gasket replaced, with a multi-layer steel unit, use ARP head studs to snug that baby up. (2) Use good oil and always keep the engine just over full. Enjoy, These cars are comfortable, heavy, overbuilt and make big power just as reliably than any JZ when taken care of. I'd buy one as soon as you can. Prices are going up. Even get a 1ggte car, save your money and swap it when you have the money set aside. Just get one and start turning wrenches.
Dana-Anthony Hoeft thanks, probably wouldn’t swap as I just want a fun JDM car, but I’d definelty redo the interior. Thanks for the quick response and hopefully I can get one when I get my license
@@DanaAnthonyHoeft Hello, iam using an Castrol 10w60 atm with a bone Stock mk3. Got an metall gasket 5years ago 20k miles. They did not change the headbolts. Why do you overfill the oil? Very clean car nice to see a mk3 like that.
@@nicoleibundgut534 7m's can use some oil from time to time. Personally I'd like to know its a little over full than under full. Also oil slosh in the pan can be an issue under really spirited driving.
Restoring a built 450hp 7mgte for my 87 supra. Hx35, 1000cc, bored, oversized valves. Do you have a build walkthrough on yours? If be very curious to see it!
I do actually have videos to walk a guy through whats needed 0-400hp ish and 4-600+ then most recently a 1k hp info dump so there are three videos for you to check out all are fairly informative haha
Thanks man, engine is rock solid. Its ran 9's since 2008 lol and make over 1000hp for 7 or 8 years now I believe. Its been driven across Canada 8000+km in 4 days straight with no hiccups. Down to California and back multiple times for events. Its reliable. I wont swap it out for a JZ no. No need. Plenty more room for more power and being as reliable as it is I have no reason to consider a swap. Even if the engine gives up one day I think I will just build the 7M again.
@@DanaAnthonyHoeft YES! THANK YOU. For not being like every other mk3 owner and sticking in a 2jzgte lol. Having the original 7mgte is what makes this beauty stand from other mk3 supras.
Its actual an OE pump, its got an ARZ Performance pick up tube in the pan. The stock Toyota pick up tube is crush bent so there are a couple kinks in it almost from factory. (Not ideal) Get some new bearings and the crank polished up if its savable. new pick up tube from arz performance and a shimmed pump if you need to replace yours from driftmotion. re-assemble and shred on
I discovered that the crank was already was cut down to .25mm. My 7mgte does has the tubes upgraded but what happened was that the shaft that goes with the timing belt that makes the pump work was moving. I already put on a 7mge crank and all the bearings new. I don’t know how the shaft moved from the place. I could see that the shaft was worn out in a specific area and started to be loosen. Watch out that the shaft on your 7m doesn’t have any play. I knew about the factory tube that breaks, but I didn’t know about the shaft. I don’t know if this is common. My 7mgte has a 6465 Full built head Eagle rods Methanol injection 1000cc injectors Custom manifold It’s making 538HP at 14psi in a mustang dyno.
Well the engine did fatigue. Its being rebuilt now. Been through a couple transmissions and other parts like a diff, sub frame/clutch and other parts aftermarket parts that failed on my like fuel pump. Stuff like that. Overall the 7M is every bit as capable as the 2JZ/RB30 ect when built right. With the new engine I explect 1200+ to be reliable for a long time.
I keep having blowby problems i had my engine rebuilt and bore40 over . This what i have done . 264 bc cams, hks metal headgasket ,arp headstuds did the zulu mod on head wide oilpan holds 8qts oil ,chimmed oil pump .550 rc injectors apexi neo controller.the machinevshop put dnj pistons with rings . Any advice would help. Thanks
Do a compression and leak down test. Will see what cylinders are holding compression and what cylinders are not quite holding all the compression. Blow by is normal to a point
I've been wondering where this car was now. I've been looking to swap out all my int. same as this car was . I hate the burgundy color . mine's int. is in great condition , But went from white to Black body paint and with Burgundy int. it just don't feel right to me. I need shadow grey !! found two 91's with the grey but busted dash & ripped up seats always ...
Yes sir, It lives with me now. The shadow grey is nice but personally black is much nicer and way more rare if you can manage to find it in a 91 or 92. Either way the shadow grey or black is the toughest to find. Both look classy
Thanks for following along, I plan to make more content and continue to show and modify the car. I don't know if you watched my newest video with the supra but there is a massive car show I will be attending in a couple weeks. Will be filming the car there next. Get some content out there with your car. Lets take over RU-vid with mk3's lol
Rev limiter is set to a very comfortable 7500 rpm. The 89 and up 7M Supra stock limiter was just over 6200. The big GT42 is full niose by 5000 or so. Leaves the car with 2500 rpm of party time.
@@DanaAnthonyHoeft i see i see, i would want some more revs from my 7m to, its fully built except for the head which has just been rebuilt, do you think i can safely jack it up to 7000-7500ish with the stock head?
Did you have your rotating assembly balanced when the engine was rebuilt? The stock cams really wont do you any favours past stock reline. You could increase the rev limit but what then would be the gain would be my question. Stock cams make a pile of mid range power and the 7M is a torque monster, in my opinion its like a V8 in a way. It doesn't need to rev to make silly silly amounts of power. what are your power goals, tell me about you set up?
@@DanaAnthonyHoeft to be honest its more for the sound, love the sound of a high revving i6 previous owner said the bottompart was balanced, i only put the engine together power goals are 700whp, its now mapped to 667whp at 1.1bar. apparently it should be good for about 1200hp (with more supporting mods and a bigger turbo) i dont have the parts list on my computer :/
@@MistRVertexZ 667whp at like 17 psi is great power, takes a big turbo to make that kind of power at such low boost. A few years back with an original GT42 this car made 730 whp on 23psi on pump. You might be making more power than me lol.
I assure you its quite normal. The extra wheel in the end of my intake cam is a magnetic pick up for cam timing, looks a little funny to some people lol
@@DanaAnthonyHoeft how did you do and what is the purpose of you're camshaft rolling like that would love to know myself i have myself a mk3 88 targa turbo, maybe the way you timed you're engine block could have advandges for hp pls comment down below
Hey Dana it’s been a while, we spoke a while back on Fb. Iam looking for a reputable shop to send my 7mgte and I need your blessing or suggestion on where to ship it. Any idea?
Best thing you can do is ask around locally and work with the best local builder you can find. Shipping an engine to be built and returned adds alot of expense that could be used otherwise to build the engine with better parts or take the next step. Where about are you I may even know some one semi local.
Quite some time ago it was done haha. I believe its an HKS 1.2mm MHG, The ARP studs hold it together at 100ft lbs. Just make sure when your block is shaved if your going that far that the front timing cover is on when you take it into the machine shop or it wont seal as intended.
@@DanaAnthonyHoeft .. gotcha. Any idea if it's the stopper or bead? 100ft lbs is more than you normally hear. Some serious torque. Do you have any idea how many miles are on that build ?
It has a bead, 100 ft lbs is pretty standard. Even on my bolt on or stock-ish MK3's I put together in the past for me its been 100 ft lbs. I have always used the HKS gaskets both 1.2 and 2 mm versions and ARP studs of course. Never had a problem with a head gasket after that. Most guys recommend about 80-90 ft lbs. I can tell you the engine was built in 07 and has been driven across country in 3 days about 6000 miles, to and from California multiple times for events 1200 miles each way and its still together and healthy. Some where around 250 passes at the track and at least 200 dyno pulls... Its reliable, the key is good parts, good machine work and safe tuning. Its seen some serious millage and actually makes more power now than ever haha.
@@DanaAnthonyHoeft .. understood. Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. I just have one more atm. Would you consider the stopper better than the bead or vise versa and why?
The HKS gasket has a bead around the combustion chamber but is a stopper type gasket. Stopper and Grommet style MHG's are similar and have proven more reliable than a simple bead type. Stopper and grommet gaskets seal better.
sorry for the late response, Its a time thing man. Every year I change a few things. This car was a project started by a friend of mine in 1999 so with it being an on going project for 21 years now alot has changed haha Its not all about money more time and thinking out the project to build it once instead of building and changing and building and changing. Keep us in the loop with your project
Actually its a stock R154, dont let anyone tell you a good R154 wont hold the power. There are a lot of people out there that try to say otherwise. I can tell you that it will hold the power because it does lol
@@DanaAnthonyHoeft Right on man, thanks for the reply. I can only hope mine will be OK. I had to buy a used one, and don't fully know the condition of if yet. My HP goals will be 320 to roughly 450. I'll just hope for the best.
100% stock? I imagine it atleast has the Marlin crawler upgrades. I shattered my thrust washer in the low 400tq range. I did the full mc rebuild besides the forks because in a typical cheap mk3 owner Haha. I just reused the stock forks.
@@smallish_mk3733 I one day plan to do the MC rebuild, but I too am on a budget, and sadly have to cut a few corners to get it done. I just want to drive my Supra again... It's been over two years since the 7MGE popped (Yes... I bought the car as an auto NA). I'm still currently compiling parts to get started. The struggle is real, but I refuse to give up on my A70; it will see the road again.
I believe I do, There is no other 7M on the streets right now that makes more HP than this one. There are a few drag only (filled block) engines that have made more power but none that you can actually drive on the street with out them melting lol And there is more power to come yet. Stay tuned
Intake manifold was fabbed up by a friend of mine Ron R, The intake pipe and charge piping was done by franke in Van. Can see some more of his work in IG @frankenstienspeedcustom. top shelf workmanship.
@@ramdydeaton827 Awesome man, the throttle body is a Q45 unit, good upgrade and it will bolt too the oem intake manifold as well. The cams in my car are custom billet units. 300 duration and just over 12mm lift. Kinda a race only cam, not super streetable for most people.
@@DanaAnthonyHoeft thanks for the information i bored mine 40 over with 272 cams the only thng is i got my intake out of Japan with 90 mil throttle body. So im not sure about all the spec on air to fuel and compression
Lol. with 1000cc injectors in it.. not likely. Im shocked it pulled 1036 with 1000cc injectors. That's just silly to even try. Car has a larger turbo now and at boost levels in the 40 psi range the turbo it self and exhaust system are both a choke point for HP. This car will never see over 1200ish with this turbo and exhaust combination period. I know because Ive tried.
@@DanaAnthonyHoeft why not just a bigger turbo instead of relying on meth? Ive never taken the 7m to this level so I don't know if she's running or of room?? Or what? Do you think you can sway Ron to come out of retirement for a sec?
@@ttsupra87I think Ron is enjoying retirement haha, Turbo is a decent size. The car runs on meth on my pump gas tune anyways. Not for a HP benefit but more reliability. I don't trust pump gas. Id like it to be ran per cylinder so I can again increase reliability by making all the cylinders run at the same temp. My TC8 will let me see each exhaust runners temp and I can tune temps to my liking with fuel management.
I did a short walk around already, youll find it in my other videos. Im actually going to film a more in depth walk around tomorrow really covering most everything. So you should see that video up with in this next week.
like fuel? in a 100 miles. I dont want to know.. haha alot. I try not to think about expense with the car but to operate it through the season with fuel and parts that fail. the last 3 seasons have cost about 6000 a year ish
1:58 Warm it up a little bit ??? You mean you are not gonna do a cold start and rev the shit out of it like the other idiots do?? Glad you are one of the few smart ones out there
@@DanaAnthonyHoeft Its the fact that most have NO idea how an engine works other than having to keep putting in gas every week or so. They just assume you turn the key, the engine fires up and its ready to go. In a sense YES but they don't realize that after the car has been sitting for ~12 hrs that all the oil has dropped into the pan and now the pump has to circulate that oil thru the motor which takes time, time that most don't give it.
lol I am a picky guy I will admit, There are millions of dirty cars out there. I want people to think of a very well kept car when they see or think of my car.
