Michael, Thank you for addressing my question about Generic Subjective Continuity. I've been working on a short way of conveying it for a while now and have finally fine tuned it into this tweetable size: Imagine you and another conscious being are the only two beings in the entire universe. There's only yours and its conscious experiences. Then you cease to exist. The only experience that could follow your end is the (other) conscious experience that didn't cease to exist. ___ That's it. Very simple. If you cease to exist, the only thing that could follow is one of the conscious experiences that DO exist. And we know there will be billions of conscious experiences going on in all the other life-forms that didn't die yet. So it'll be one of those that will follow our ceasing to exist. It isn't like there will be an endless "black screen" or whatever. No, you'll be completely gone. So when we remove ourselves from the picture (the universe), the picture is still what's going on.
@One eyed Curious J'aimerais bien savoir de quoi ce mec parle? D'après moi ce n'est qu'une mauvaise tentative de calomnie et injure. Hélas un autre connard.
@One eyed Curious Sorry for my obtuseness, didn't catch the humour and took it personally. You are entitled to your opinion but I just thought you were a bit acerbic. My admiration for Dr. Shermer isn't unbounded. I just like his style of reasoned debate and the milestone of his 100th episode is noteworthy. He is one of the few real 'liberal' voices left. I fear I may be a little too center of right for your liking. Anyway thanks for the reply. Btw, I also condemn Mr. Gore for his unabashed hypocrisy and profiteering.
Jonathan Archer We do use evidence in science otherwise we wouldn’t have any scientific and technological progress. Like every endeavor that humans are involved in, there are both truths and lies in government. I tend to believe that the balance is that there is more truth because it is very difficult to conscript a majority of people to lie on your behalf or to keep their lies hidden (people talk). This is especially true with bureaucrats who over time must work under different political parties and therefore aren’t as partisan as politicians. As well, even convincing lies tend to eventually become exposed and the truth comes out.
Great episode, I really enjoy these Ask Me Anything segments, very enlightening; and starting out with a trolling shitpost was hilarious. Many thanks for your dedication and hard work to add a bit of sanity to a crazy world.
Alphonse Allais once wrote (roughly translated): "Shakespeare never existed. All of his works were written by an unknown man who happened to have the same name as him." ^^
Michael spoke briefly about President Trump in a negative light (providing no evidence or examples). Next he spoke about 'confirmation bias' in regard to Hitler and Michael Jackson. Does Dr Shermer know the meaning of irony?
because there are NUMEROUS examples of drumpf contradicting himself or just flat out lying..just like all the corporate owned pretend presidents for decades...lmao..get over your love for an elite entitled robbing moron..
