This week I fit the coach with lights (LED's) and make my own stay alive and circuit to work with DC and DCC using DCC concept pickup springs

Yep, I use nearly the same components for my lighting and keep alive circuits. Don't use a pot or a resistor. The LED strips have the current limiting resistors (ballast) already installed. I use ESU 50707 current collectors from ESU; you can get 8 sets for $8.95 with $4.00 shipping. That's enough to do 8 axles. I ordered the bright white LED strips which look very unnatural so I painted each LED with yellow acrylic paint and that made it look a whole lot better. Cheers from eastern TN

Thanks for the tips, I use an extra resister to bring the brightness down along with the pot. I do sometimes paint the LED's depending on the colour I can get.

Like the wire tip , always a pain getting thin wire at reasonable price without having to much more than u need

Hi Mark A nice simple explanation of the lighting set up, although fitting the wire onto the wheelsets seems a little fiddley, I'm an N gauge modeller and wouldn't like to try that with the size of those wheels, but none the less very informative, thanks. Pete

Thanks Peter, yes it is a bit fiddley. Would be a bit more tricky on N but it has been done.

With the 'stay alive on board, I would have chosen a power pickup that just runs against the inside of the wheels instead of taking the risk of having wheels out of gauge. It would also save some fiddling as you don't need to disassemble the axles. And for the rivet counters using LED strips, is not 'good enough as the lighting would be random through the car. Not like the prototype distributed for each seating area or other compartment. But then I'm not a rivet counter.

LOL I'm no rivet counter either, I find the power pickups on the axles give less rolling resistance and I have a gauging tool to ensure the right gauge. Since the video I have soursed wheel sets with one wheel already insulated, so it makes it a bit easier.

Hi Mark on the hornby restaurant coach with table lights will they work ok on dcc, Great videos keep up the good work.

It will depend on how old there are. They should have bridge rectifiers and resistors in them to work on DC and DCC.

Very nice video. At 15 minutes in you are showing a capacitor/rectifier/potentiometer combination already mounted on a circuit board. Can you provide a link to where these can be sourced?

Thank you for watching, I picked them up from a show a few years back. It may have been from the www.layouts4u.net/ stand. I don't see them on their website, but contact them they may have them.

Hello, your video wasn't too bad but I was interested to see how you connected your wires to the bridge rectifier and the resistor in series, so is there any chance you could show all of that as it's being done in a bit more depth as this was the bit that I was most interested in seeing and didn't see it then you couldn't really see anything except for a jumble of wires and things at one end of the coach?, there's not a lot of help out there, then I saw your video and I thought "yes" finally but then it soon turned out to be "no" actually. lol. I too want to do the same thing with my coaches but I'm struggling at the moment with how to attach the bridge rectifier and the resistor to the LED strip, I won't be using the stay alive or the dimmer so if you could do this I'd be really grateful, look forward to hearing from you, many thanks, Chris. Where can you get the circuit board with those parts from you showed at the end. ? Thanks.

Nice vid on the lighting, I have several I will want to do, i`ve bought some.03 phosphor bronze wire to make my own pick up springs. I might try thin brass tube sleeved over the axle as it migh offer better pick as long as wire wire is flexible enough

I’m no expert at all. Just wanted to know the reason for the second resistor after the potentiometer please?

The second resistor is to reduce the voltage from the capacitor. It also helps reduce the voltage from the track to give a better light than just using the potentiometer. The camera makes the lights look a lot brighter than they actually are.
