I actually watched the lock picking lawyer pick your chess and checkers lock first then just had to see you put it together. Absolutely incredible how much detail you pack into such a tiny item! And the fact that you made these by hand with a dremel just makes it even more awesome. I like the ideas you come up with. A real inspiration.

So impressive, the design, idea and the fact you made them with a dremel! Nice job! I've played chess (badly) a long time and I'm very new to lockpicking, just picked 3 acrylic locks which are very easy (even without looking). Got some real ones coming in the post. It's inspiring to know what you can do with a dremel, also how you did the cutaway lock with hand tools. Especially for us living in a small flat.

I wanna have a go at picking this lock of yours now. It'll be interesting once you have some more tools to do a full pinning. Impression and cut video. I dunno if you're gonna go full on locksmith in the hobby, but I'd love to see someone take their RU-vid videos up a notch and show off the entire trade.

"Murphy Ball", it is an anti bump measure. You have to use a lot of tension to overcome it so pins bind.

Lovely pins and congratulations on pinning your first Challenge Lock 😀 . A suggestion. Get yourself a Follower with notched end. It makes pinning a lot easier because the notch wraps around the pin chamber making it way easier to place wafers and pins without them falling over or off the spring.
@LockNoob
@LockNoob 7 лет назад
Thanks, and good advice my friend :-)
@FusionDeveloper

The last "pin" isn't a pin. You can see in the core that the round indentation is only for the ball bearing with a very strong steel spring and doesn't go all the way through to where the key would interact with it physically. This is a 5 pin lock. The 6th slot only helps hold the core aligned when removing the key by snapping it back perfectly upright to make removing it easier. It could also make tensioning the core a little more confusing for a picker.
@LockNoob
@LockNoob 7 лет назад
You are right. I discuss this on the picking vid :-)
@FusionDeveloper
@FusionDeveloper 7 лет назад
I thought you said at the start 6 pins, but as soon as you took it apart, you said "a ball bearing and a spring, I wasn't expecting that", but I thought you pinned up that slot with your security pins. I'll have to watch it when I am not very hungry for food (like I am now).
@Potti314
@Potti314 7 лет назад
Beautiful pins. Great idea to make them according to a theme - wonderful craftsmanship. Have you picked it meanwhile? Easy or impossible? By the way the ball bearing goes in a little dent in the plug, possibly to let the plug snap at the key-removal position. It's a five pinner only. Thanks for another inspiring video :-)
@LockNoob
@LockNoob 7 лет назад
Thanks, Potti314. I realised my error only after this vid. I acknowledge it's only a 5 Pinner I'm my next vid, when I pick it :-)

Hey, I have a Dremel 200i and I bought a custom keyless chuck and even filed the tip down so that I can grab a pin easier, but I can't get it to spin perfectly to act as a mill for filing pins down. Is this because I need a more expensive Dremel tool or is there a trick to getting the pins to spin perfectly so that when you file them, they are symmetrical all the way around instead of lop-sided?
@LockNoob
@LockNoob 7 лет назад
Jay H, my pins are a little lop-sided too. The reason being is that if you put too much pressure on one side, the dremel takes an elliptical rotation. File or cut the pins with less pressure. It will take a bit longer though :/)

@bikkies

If one were to put the bishop, queen or pawn into the bible inverted, with their head facing the key pins, I assume a wafer would not be needed. However I'm unsure whether the rounded head in contact with the top of the key pin would make picking easier, for instance by making the shear line more forgiving. One of the things that most fascinates me about these masterpieces is that they may act as a complex multiple element spool/barrel/serrated pin all in one tiny package. I'd imagine the picker would get a whole load of weird feedback as each vertical segment of the pin reaches the shear line, particularly if they don't know what's inside. I have several sets of these pins from Sparrows but the reason I don't know the answer yet is that I'm not competent enough yet to properly finesse and appreciate the nuanced feedback; and more importantly, I am still too heavy handed with both my tension and picking. I'd hate to ruin the pins after all the effort you and Sparrows put into making them. In any event, when I do come to pin up these little marvels, I'll almost certainly chicken out and top-load them into practice locks that have grub screws (such as my Revolver).

I have a question... It looks like the key resting with it's keypins, say at around 10:39, I see 5 clear key pins and it looks like a weird last pin, the one furthest from the keyhole. I would imagine that would be where the ball bearing would rest. Would that have affected the lock at all?
@LockNoob
@LockNoob 4 года назад
No, not in an appreciable way imo
@knowspicking5925
@knowspicking5925 7 лет назад
Really fantastic job on those pins. They look great! Did you happen to notice that the core is a 5 pin core? The last "Hole" in the core appears to just be a detent for that ball bearing you pulled out. So unless I am seeing something totally wrong on the video, your last pin (The one "Standard" pin) is not doing anything in the lock whatsoever.
@LockNoob
@LockNoob 7 лет назад
Knows Picking, you are absolutely right. I acknowledge this in my upcoming vid where I pick the lock. I got so distracted when I was pinning the lock, I didn't notice, lol :-)

As I already said to you Lock Noob, your new pins look amazing :D. Repinning looked a little bit like a torture and I did ask myself why I didn't (or have I?) have supplyed you already with a pinning follower ;). We have to change this next year hehe ;). As KnowsPicking already said, your 6th driver won't come into play as there is only a little dent in the core for the ball...and you're pretty lucky that it is not bigger ;)). Kepp your great ideas coming, I'm happy looking forward :).
@LockNoob

Love the pins. But one question. Why master wafers? Will that not make the picking easier. Any joy with the padlock yet. Another great vid. Thanks mate..
@LockNoob
@LockNoob 7 лет назад
APACHE-LOCKSPORT, the [master] wafers never come into play as they are spring-side not shear side. They are only there to protect the tops of the pins which are thiner (~1.5 mm) and risk the springs slipping over the top of them. As for the Squire, I have swapped out the core for another one, but I'm still struggling to pick it... Need a bit of your talent and skill I think!

APACHE-LOCKSPORT, not much but I'm working on it. Trying to tension by levering back on the shackle, do you think that will work? Have tried the watchmakers screwdriver too but not getting anywhere fast. I'll keep at it :-)
@JONSLOCKPICKING
@JONSLOCKPICKING 7 лет назад
I don't no about the shackle tension. you got to wedged the the screwdriver in. once you move lever half way up. then pick the levers till they stay up. hope that helps. good luck.
