We were back out at the HCHS site at Devon AB to fire up the next machine on the list. This 1066 Koehring excavator. It needs a few things to be ready to dig but we know what it needs now! Hope you enjoy this one, it was the easiest start up so far out at the site. Much more to come from the grounds out there so make sure to stay tuned, and go follow us on instagram "hchscanada" and find us on facebook "Heavy Construction Heritage Society HCHS". Thanks for watching, dont forget to like and subscribe.

Thank you so much for showing off the old girl ( 1066) Koehring start up 😊❤ The real treat was you explained the AIR control for the levers and thumb PUSH connectors on the two main lever controls I am so fascinated by those old Air over Hydraulic operating systems 😊 I pick up old operator manual from Internet when people SELL them. For me personally I OWN a 1978 BE Dynahoe 190 2 wheel drive. I ran one in 1979 on a mainline sewer job. I dug side sewer stubs. I feel in love with just the stoutness of a Dynahoe compared to the Case 580-C that I first started on. We had a 680 & 780 case on that sewer job. The 680 had a hoepacker And 780 also dug side sewer stubs. When you talked about leaky cylinders, my Two front dump bucket cylinders leak badly. I just did the left one, now have to take off right one. My backhoe end has what Dynahoe called ( Twin-A-Trol control) basically joy sticks instead of the standard for Dynahoe 4 levers. On Dynahoe factory spec. It was set up with JD control ( the boom on left stick) mine is set up with Boom on right stick. What I found interesting about the 4 lever pattern it was just like a Case only the swing was on far right side ( and separation) of 4 lever with 2 stabilizer short levers in the middle. It has a Detroit Diesel (353) engine rated at (92 HP) its Wt. is (19400)

Long boom keeps the operator from digging out underneath the machine... Nice safety feature..lol. Pretty cool old machine!! Thank you Nathan!

Thanks Ed!! And you make a very valid point, your not digging underneath yourself in this one

Glad ya take time to post vids. I find all this old iron to be super cool. ESP this person(s) collection. The one offs in this guys set are wild n def for a carpenter like me who dreamed of heavy machine life it was the guys who ran this stuff that I thought had the coolest jobs!

I'm amazed these old Detroit two strokes have such a clean exhaust. A lot of well known four stroke stuff would be belching out smoke. Thank you for the video.

I too have thought the same thing, so far all the Detroits we’ve fired up out there have ran surprisingly clean. Thanks

The long boom and short stick is for digging in the streets under power lines doing sewer. Pretty much standard setup on those. Don’t bother trying to run that in the winter , air lines freeze and it will do crazy shit.

Thanks for the info! And yeah air systems in the winter always cause havoc

Great Video!.... I was wishing you would have at least turned around and given us a quick shot of what was (is) under the "hood" of that tracked Ford truck right next to the 1066. I could have sworn I saw a valve cover of a 6V71... could be mistaken... but, it sure looked like it.

Thanks for watching glad you enjoyed. The next time I’m out there I’ll be sure to get a little more footage of that rig. It does have a Detroit diesel to power the excavator on the back, but not sure what’s under the hood for propelling the unit around. Thanks again

@@ironman3406.... Thank you so much for your reply, I appreciate it. Did I hear you say that you're from Sask.? If so, where in Sask.? I worked up there, back in the 1970's & early 80's. I also drag raced there, with SIR as my "home strip" 11 miles south of "S'toon". Lots of good memories for me there and all the friends I made "when we were Young"! lol

Ernie Pestana in San Jose, Ca had a bunch of those 1066 hoes. I don't know if he had an 1166, but I know he eventually had two of the double-engine 1266 models. He was a BIG underground contractor in his day.

@barryguerrero6480 Those 1266D models were big, powerful excavators. And they could dig to a depth of just shy of 40 feet. I had the chance to see one working in NJ way back in the mid 1980’s. The Koehring was digging to maximum depth with an 8 cubic yard bucket. The thing that really amazed me was the incredible reach the machine had with a full bucket. The 1266D was loading a mixed fleet of CAT & EUCLID haul trucks ( 50 ton and 35 ton capacity). The project was a waste transfer station located in the NJ meadowlands.Unfortunately I never got the chance to see the Koehring 1466.That was the largest model that Koehring ever manufactured. The 1466 was actually available as a shovel or backhoe.

Is that yard apart of the leduc discovery museum? I have driven past that yard many times and drooled over the old relics.

If you’d pay attention to the video you’d see that the tracks are only there for the intro and the walk around - the starting and moving of it are legit. Just the filming was out of order.
