That's why they said "sort of." Obviously their films are very different. When most people make the comparison they're simply referring to both studio's impact on their respective cultures.

Most people are smart enough to think of it as an easy connection for people to better understand what something they are unfamiliar with is by connecting it to or comparing it to something familiar (in this case Disney being the familiar and on similar standing as Ghibli). MOST people are smart enough to realize this.

@Yr Ayon that’s kind of sad. Anime is a slippery slope of losing touch with reality for some people who can’t distinguish works of art from real life. Just remember nobody is going to remember the beauty you love to encapsulate in your life if you never do anything with your life. It’s all about the balance

I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of these movies. Ever. They are comfort movies, they’re there when I want reality to go away for a while. They make things better for a moment in time and give me things to think about and focus on when my mind is too loud with other things. Big thanks to everyone involved in the making of these treasures. We all thank you.

You should thank the female authors who worked hard and written the books for mr rip off Miyazaki to steal the stories and make movies out of the books. Single thanks to all the female writters who made Miyazaki famous so called genius artist when in fact all of the stories, places and beauty comes from female authors writing those stories and didn't get a single thanks for their work while some idiotic Miyazaki is called genius artist. It was a female author who wrote howls moving castle. all of ghibli studio movies are based off from stories in the books that were written by female authors.

"Howl's Moving Castle" wasn't the first Studio Ghibli movie I ever saw, but it was the one that convinced me that not all Japanese animation would annoy the heck out of me. The art was beautiful, the story good, and the dubbing well-done, and most of the anime tropes that get on my nerves weren't present or were limited. It also holds a warm place in my heart because I bonded with some of my floor-mates over the movie my Freshman year of college. I didn't make many friends in college, because I was under a lot of stress and in the process of burning out, but those two were good friends, and helped me maintain my sanity longer that I probably would have otherwise.

Studio Ghibli movies are actually amazing. I watched a lot of films when I was a child and I almost forgot all of them and their storylines even though I loved them. Yet, Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle always existed in my mind. Surprisingly, when I was 16 I still remembered every single detail of the film. That's how much I love the film.

Ponyo was the first film I watched, and there was just such a beautiful type of love between the characters where they loved each other without expecting anything back. It got me hooked as a kid because I thought that’s how it should be. It was such an innocent love that had nothing to do with romance and everything to do with falling in love with someone’s soul

Fun fact: Hayao Miyazaki never actually thought that his early manga drawings were basically copies of Osamu Tezuka's. As he writes in his book "Starting Point" ; "I have absolutely no recollection of ever imitating Tezuka, and I have never thought that there was any resemblance between our styles, but people kept telling me that my drawings looked like his. That was terribly humiliating. " "So when I was finally forced to admit that my drawings actually DID look like Tezuka's, I took out the sketches I had stored in the drawer of our (the Miyazaki family) dresser and burned them all."

I believe it was around 6 years ago, 6 years ago when the dreams started to occur. I was 11 years old and I had a dream about a magical land in which I can only describe as being awfully familiar. It was a land of wonder and beauty. Over the years I had reoccurring dreams of this land, this country. Then it happened. I saw it. I was surfing the internet when I suddenly recognised an image from some website, with a title hovering over the image saying "Spirited Away". I immediately researched this film, and discovered that when I was a child, around 5 or 6 years old, my Japanese grandfather would show me these Studio Ghibli films, they stayed with me and shaped the person that I am today. Today is the one year anniversary of his death, and all I have to say is that I loved him so much. I find it incredibly difficult to describe the feeling Studio Ghibli movies impart on me, but from now on they will always remind me of a distant relationship with my grandfather.

Kiki's Delivery Service was one of the first pieces of Japanese media that really captured my attention in contrast to American media. I had watched various anime because they were syndicated on channels I watched but Kiki's Delivery Service went way above and beyond. Others followed like Howl's Moving Castle, Laputa, and Princess Mononoke. Ghibli created some amazing classics that have held up over time. These are the films I plan to show my children so they realize there's so much more than Pixar/Disney. People hailed Frozen for addressing deep subjects and such yet I still feel it pales in comparison to what is normal for many Japanese works. American media is more like junk food. Chips and cookies have their place, but a high quality potato chip is still a potato chip.

107(a) Japan was glad to have an Oscar winning film in "Spirited Away"; Hollywood, not so much. Shortly after the win, the Academy changed the nominating rules for animated features, for the purpose of stacking the deck against future Ghibli films. Howl fact: Miyazaki did not go to Hollywood to collect his Oscar for "Spirited Away" in the spring of 2003. He claimed a schedule conflict, but he actually was against going to America on what would have been the fifth day of the US invasion of Iraq to overthrow the government of Saddam Hussein. At the time Ghibli was working on "Howl's Moving Castle", based on a fantasy romance by Diana Wynne Jones, but Miyazaki rewrote the script to add a solid anti-war subplot.

@@tellymustard5511 I respect your opinion, but I must add in that Disney's movies are mainly meant for all audiences (with the older ones being exceptionally mature in some regards.) Nausicaa isn't an unofficial Ghibli movie. The studio that produced it, Topcraft, was dissolved and formed into Ghibli and nearly the entire production staff was carried over. If this wasn't enough, the studio bought the rights long ago and now all releases of the film are adorned with the logo on the box art and title screen precedes the film itself. I know some stingy people like to hold onto the concept that it isn't a Ghibli film, but it is in pretty much every way. Miyazaki also didn't come out of retirement to make Boro the Caterpillar, as he only retired from feature films, not side projects like short films and manga (hence why he's also currently drawing and writing a samurai one).
@SlightlyOtaku
@SlightlyOtaku 7 лет назад
Josh Leitzel Ghibli was officially formed in 1985 while the movie was done in 1984. We called it unofficial simply because it was done before the studio was even known as Studio Ghibli. Of course, Miyazaki himself considers it a Ghibli movie. As for retirement, we know. He isn't coming out of "retirement" just because he's working on Ghibli shorts.

Welp, what were the chances of this happening: io9.gizmodo.com/hayao-miyazaki-is-stepping-out-of-retirement-for-one-fi-1788928111
@JoshLeitzel
@JoshLeitzel 7 лет назад
Yeah, pretty convenient timing. Though I think we should temper our expectations, as the proposal was never said to be confirmed yet. And even if it were, I think it's heavily implied that it would merely be an expansion of the already aforementioned CGI Boro the Caterpillar short film.

We need 107 facts on Kiki’s Delivery Service. My story: 2004 was the first time when I watched it, I was 4 and watch it with my grandmother a lot on VHS from the library📚. When I was 6, I moved and never saw Kiki again. 12 years later, my grandmother died😢 and after 3 more years later. I revived watching Kiki‘s delivery service:.) It still holds up to this very day and gave me tears of joy. To come back after 15 years and remembering those times that I had with my grandmother.🥲 (Personally, I still have a little crush on Kiki when I was 4 and still do even though I’m older, such a beautiful witch and a great movie).

I write about anime--IRL my name is Patrick Drazen--and there is so much to say about "Marnie", including the two kabuki ghost stories referenced in the Ghibli version, and the fact that the Ghibli version now takes place on Tanabata--the 7th day of the 7th month--a day when your deepest wish can come true. Based on a Chinese legend of two heavenly beings--a weaver and a cowherd--who fall in love but can only be with each other one day per year--this cosmic Romeo/Juliet story was also animated--kinda--by Sanrio, the Hello Kitty people, as the film "The Legend of Sirius", released in the west as "Sea Prince and the Fire Child."

Isao Takahata also directed the first-ever TV adaptation of Anne of Green Gables. Much like Heidi did for the Swiss Alps, tourism to Prince Edward Island in Canada boomed as a result of the series.
