Jimmy and Mark settle in for 10-ish minutes to discuss their top recommendations for optics in the Vortex lineup for the typical midwestern whitetail hunter. Everything from the riflescope choice to binos, rangefinder and… a spotting scope? Who’da thunk! If you’re busy trying to throw together your whitetail gear before fall really hits this year, give this one a listen for starters.

I have a diamondback hp on a Sako A7 soft touch, chambered in 25 06 Remington. I love this combination for whitetails. 4×16 power, great for short ,long shots or anything in between.

I have some Diamondback Tactical scopes that I really like. And a Dead Hold that served its purpose. But I really like the Venom I have on my rifles. And also, which usually stays in the truck so that I have it with me is my Diamondback 12X50 binos. You need those, even for the thick woods I hunt in down south. Parts of it are as wooded as many parts of Wisconsin. I do have a Ranger 1300 laser range finder but many times, I just range in the EBR-7C reticle.

Could you guys do a 10 minute talk on the 280 remington I think it's an underated cartridge that should be discussed

I have been shooting one for 25 years and always thought it was odd no one ever talked about it. First season with a new savage 110 in 300 win this year haven’t fired a shot yet and I’m researching new scopes.

I use a Leica Geovid 10x40 which is my bino and rangefinder all in one. Why not consider a combo unit so you don't carry as much in the field?

I prefer 50 over 40 but know vortex has some 44 I may give a try to split the difference.

Between a smaller objective, about 40/44 mm on a 1 inch tube versus a 50 mm objective on 30 mm tube, which one do y'all think would be better for hunting west, longer distances. So, the light gathering vs. weight tradeoff, as I'll be hiking my way around to get the meat. Secondly, what if the first option of smaller objective has an illuminated reticle does that level things out a bit? I want to go lighter, so leaning toward the smaller objective/tube with illumination but haven't seen the difference in image between 44 and 50 mm and 1 inch and 30 mm tubes to know if its a massive difference in light at dusk/dawn.

Honestly, the objective size will play slightly into it (usually only noticeable when at higher magnification in low-light situations), but optical quality should be the more important factor. An optic with a 40 mm objective that has better optical quality will bring in more light than a more entry level optic with a larger objective. Did you have a price range in mind for an optic? We would be happy to point you in the right direction for your application!

How's d vortex kaibab 18x56 binocular r they really crystal clear on long range distance ?

They do work great at longer distances. Certainly not something we'd recommend for whitetail hunting like we talked about in this podcast, but out west in vast open expanses, they do excellent.

Throw in the fury binos and you only have 2 necessary optics

Binoculars i would say are more important than a range finder...
