I believe this is the most misunderstood AR cartridge. It deserves to be way more popular than it is.

Yes but you have to remember, its purpose driven. If you arent shooting a 125g projectile in a 16"+ barrel for maximum velocity and energy in a AR platform, this probably isnt the cartridge for you. I shoot 110-125g in a 1:13 twist 16". I have no desire to shorten the barrel and lose velocity, use a larger weight bullet, losing velocity or try to figure out how to run this suppressed subsonic. I have a 300 blk with a fast twist for suppressed subsonic. My 16" 300 hamr, I can take with me when I fly to NM, CO, UT, TX etc and shoot just about anything inside 300 yards with great terminal performance.

Wilson have no idea what they are missing. They need a hard lead fmj boat tail round, with a reasonably.pointy nose, for grizz defense. 150 plus grains, as heavy as they think they can go. Maybe 180 grains. you need a boat tail for best grizz defense because you need "aerodynamics" to Rip through fur, then skin, then 8" of fat. The fat soaks up energy that you need to penetrate ribs, then vitals. So high bc bullets are good for big bears. If they came out with a heavy chambering in this, and called it "grizzly defense 300 hamr 180 grain"..... They would sell a million rounds and ten thousand barrels in a few months, straight to Alaska. Canadians would get on board too. Anyone who lives in grizz country and has a wife and they don't want her running a full size ar10 because they're too big. Ar15 180 grain 300 hamr would be great.

@@roscoep1082 nobody is talking about this cartridge for below 16" barrel. It has too much powder for that. 300 blk loaded supersonic has too much powder for a ten inch barrel, and optimizes 14"-16" for hunting. The 300 hamr needs a full length barrel 16"-20". It needs time to burn the powder, just like a 5.56. But I'm sure someone will want to run 208 grain 300 hamr bullet and 14" barrel. Which might be quite useful for hunting in dense woods.

Agreed. A friend of mine who has been hunting, loading, shooting, and gunsmithing for many years told me about the 300 Ham’r. I was skeptical at first, but after researching more I went for it and love it. And yes it has its sweet spot of AR platform hunting of medium to large-ish game. I hope it really takes off in the industry!

Ok, here’s what you missed, I have a 16” model. It’s definitely a reloading cartridge. Brass can be made in the same manner as the 300 BLK. You can actually get a jig for your harbor freight mini chop saw from Etsy of all places. But brass is available from Wilson and Starline. The worst group I’ve ever gotten out of mine is just over an inch @ 100 yards with a 150 grain. The best is under 1/2 inch with 125-130. It’s very consistent. My gun weighs 7 1/2 lbs with scope empty mag and sling. It’s such a joy to carry in the field that it’s become my favorite hunting gun! It will deliver the prerequisite 1000 lbs at 200 yards with all of its loads and further with the 150s. It’s basically a better 30-30 with MOA or better accuracy. Bill Wilson developed it specifically for hunting hogs and it fills the bill. It works great on deer as well. It just needs more love ❤️. Thanks again!

Built my setup about 2 years ago around Wilson's fluted 18" barrel and a carbon fiber handguard, and I have to agree with your description: a joy to carry, and to shoot. I experience similar accuracy and consistency as you do, although I load almost exclusively 123/125gr. I'm glad this cartridge has gotten the coverage and popularity it deserves. I know everyone has their favorite pet cartridge besides 5.56mm, but the .300 HAM'R really is excellent!

As I understand it, it wasn't Wilson Combat coming out with it as a new idea to sell. It was Bill Wilson looking for the ideal cartridge for his specific hunting needs in a rifle he would want to carry. When he finally got what he wanted (.30-30 performance in an AR-15), they slapped a name on it and started selling it. They already had HAM'R trademarked from their big bore .458 HAM'R so that's why it is called such.
@chrisp556
@chrisp556 Год назад
Bill's sole purpose was getting 30-30 performance from an AR platform. Bill originally named it the 30-30AR. From a video I watched about it someone was shooting it and said "this thing really hammer's". Bill then changed it to 300 Ham'r. I built an 18 inch Urban Sniper 300 Ham'r and it's one of my favorites.

I think they had the rights as a company to the HAM'R Name, so decided to use it when they decided to attempt marketing it. I think he tends to think of marketing as much as development, which simply makes him good at business! I'm intrigued by this whole set up to be honest!

Just going to drop my two cents here. I have been hunting with the .300 HAM'R for several years now. I've taken 5 deer with it. I found that the 135 grain HAM'R bonded to be a great all around bullet. Every deer taken has seen a complete pass through with exit holes about the size of golf balls. No deer has run more than 15 yards after being hit with the HAM'R. This past year's buck was over 200lbs and didn't go 15 feet before dropping. Chronograph says the factory 135g HAM'R bonded was cooking at 2450fps at the muzzle. This is a bit over what the box is rated for, but within expected tolerance. For self defense a 125 grain TNT bullet at 2600fps would be awesome home defense. I've loaded some for coyote hunting, I just need to get out there and try them.

I have a 11.3 300 ham'r and I reload it and love it. My primary reason for having this cartridge is it's accuracy I have never had a 300 blackout be better than a 2-3 inch gun at 100yds but my 300 ham'r in a 11.3 is a consistent with factory Wilson loads 1-1.5 inches at 100 and with my loaded 110tsx or Lehigh CC is .75 to 1 inch at 100 yards.

I have one and love it! Used dozens of cartridges thru the years for whitetails and the 300 Hamer is my new favorite. Mr Wilson developed this as a hunting round. He pig hunts on his ranch and did extensive testing on the 300 H on pigs and deer. I've killed several deer with it over 3 seasons now and it is everything that Wilson combat says it is. Bought a barrel and ammo from wilson. Installed it on my upper and the first 5 shot group about 1/2 inch. Accurate, mild recoil and devastating on mid size animals! I hunt in wooded areas where shots are limited to 200 yds.Perfect cartridge for this type of hunting!

Both platforms are effective for stopping medium-sized game at 300 yards. They have worked flawlessly for me and made me a sub-minute marksman, which I was not consistently for a long time with my factory-ammo loaded 556 uppers. Depending on what game and area I go to, I only choose between my 375 Raptor and the 300 Ham’r. Nothing more.

Great episode! I absolutely love my .300 HAM'R. I built an 18" mid (intermediate) gas system, 1:15. I run everything suppressed. (avg. numbers below) 125 Sierra PH- 2,530 fps; 1,775 ft lbs 130 Speer Hot Core- 2,475 fps; 1,765 ft lbs Both solid numbers to reach out a bit, but it's not meant to be a long-range round, like the 6ARC, or the 6.5 Grendel. These numbers absolutely dominate my 300BLK, albeit optimized in a 10.5" pistol gas, 1:8 configuration. As you stated, it has its place, which is subsonic and suppressed. 110 Hornady GMX- 2,175 fps; 1,150 ft lbs I decided to also build out a .300 HAM'R with an 11" carbine gas, 1:13 configuration. This is a great "run and gun" hog platform. It's smaller, lighter and easier to manage than the 18", and only gave up ~215 fps for the same rounds: 125 Sierra PH- 2,315 fps; 1,490 ft lbs It still outperforms my 300BLK, in pretty much the same configuration, with a larger grain bullet. I think Bill was able to do exactly what he set out to do, which is fully optimize the AR15 platform for a .30 caliber round, and not necessarily meant to "de-throne" the 300BLK (it has its place), but rather reach .30.30 Win ballistics in the AR15 platform. Best,

@@sloth1490 As you stated, very new. I don't have any personal experience with it, and I'm always excited about new cartridges; to see how they perform, stack up to others, if they fill a gap, etc. 'Q' has done a tremendous job in silencer/suppressor innovation and is partnering with Faxon. It will require the AR10 platform as opposed to the smaller AR15. I love that we keep innovating and don't rely on what is current. Just think about where we'd be if did...we wouldn't even be talking about it since it's built from the 6.5 CM, so if that wasn't realized...either way, I'm sure it packs a punch!

I wish I would have found this episode right after you put it out. I have 3 different 300 Hamrs. I have an 11 inch AR Pistol, I have an 18 inch rifle and I have a 20 inch. I LOVE the 300 HAMR. There are a couple things to add to the information you gave, even though your information was fairly thorough. The first thing to bring up is accuracy. This cartridge is interantly stupid accurate. If you do any research you will find that people are getting 1/2 MOA accuracy with these rifles all the time. The hunting lease I used to be on was right next door to a ranch that did pheasant shoots and the escapees would get over on our land. I have made neck shots at approximately 80 yards multiple times without a problem. Also the power these cartridges have is incredible. The hogs I have shot have dropped like they were hit by lightning bolts. Another thing I wish you would have dug deeper, is the fact that by taking a 125 -130 grain bullet up to approximately 2500-2550 fps, you are extending the practical shooting range over a 300 BLK from 150 yards as a practical range out to approximately 500 yards. The reason why it is further than a 30-30 is all in the ballistics. A 30-30 is about 200-225 yards because it basically has to have a round nose due to the tube/ magazine. By having a stackable magazine, you can use much higher ballistic coefficient bullets. The one cartridge I think they could add to the ham'r line and I think it would be so cool to experiment with would be a 7mm Ham'r. That would get the 110-130 bullets up 20-25% higher of BC. Kind of an AR15 version of the 7mm-08. The one thing I have wanted people to do that I have brought up to Wilson Combat several times is a head to head with the 6.5 Grendel.

I have a Wilson Combat Tactical Hunter 300 Hamr. A friend turned me on to this caliber as I was new on the AR scene. I wanted more power than .556 and didn’t want to get a heavier AR10. What I found is the accuracy is incredible. At 100 yards I shot 20 shots dead center in the same hole. This gun is a laser. Must be twist rate along with bullet weight. Mine is a 13 twist 18” barrel. It’s very forgiving and light recoil. It hits hard and would be an excellent deer gun. I’ve seen a few photos of Elk taken. I’ve seen videos saying accuracy up to 700 yards. Sig makes 125 grain along with Wilson Ammo. I would venture this gun will gain in popularity. Consistent under 1” groups. This Is the real deal. I’m a big fan. You can’t miss with this cartridge. Great for self defense and will take most North American game. It’s expensive but worth it.

Late to this but I got into with the minimum, barrel swap and gas tube. Several different bullets and weights. This is one accurate rifle even with the soft point hunting rds. With the 135 ftx bullets it’s almost impossible to not get Sub moa even from this old glasses wearing guy. For whitetail it’s the 30-30 on steroids in the AR platform. Definitely use blackout mags for more than 3-4 rounds tho.

And it's Wildcats. As a lover of the lee Enfield & 303 cartridge ( lives in Australia ) the lee Enfield 303 had a reputation as the almighty 303 back in the day. Now we all know it's only mild compared to almost everything else out there . But for 90 - 100 years it did everything in the commonwealth countries. ( mostly with 174gr fmj ) I personally think it makes a great patrol rifle for those that can't have semi autos & the like. It's a fast firing bolt action that holds 10rds & can be stripper fed. I've owned the 25 & 270 cal Wildcats. I'm toying with the idea of a 6mm or 6.5 version, scout set up with back up irons & full chassis concept. Why not lol.

ER Shaw is offering barrels as well as Wilson Combat. Have seen 4 rifles put together with 2 being Wilson and 2 being Shaw. Every one of them were sub MOA, the best being consistently 1/2 MOA or less. Fantastically accurate, and pleasant to shoot, with an 11" pistol producing better muzzle velocity than a 16" AK (just barely). Great cartridge that has been accepted by SAAMI, with Sig helping out with getting it SAMMI specced. I would imagine Sig will get into loading for this, and possibly building rifles for this clambering. Now if I could get one in a light bolt action platform for hunting...

Totally get all the comparison with 300BLK since they’re the most similar, but I would’ve liked to hear some comparison with 350 Legend since it’s a widely available AR15 hunting cartridge that’s also just a different barrel and magazine.
@letsgobrandon416
@letsgobrandon416 2 года назад
It's not a comparison really. 350 Legend is a compliance cartridge. From the muzzle, at 16" barrels, 300 Hamr > 300 Blackout > 350 Legend, and they are about equally spaced apart in velocity. However the 350 Legend loses velocity much faster than the others because it has blunt nosed bullets.

I have several uppers for my AR15 platform. One is a 20”, 15 twist 300 Hamr. I am pushing 150 grn bonded boat tails at 2380fps. The energy, ballistics and terminal performance are pretty incredible for an AR15. 1000 ftlb at just over 400 yards is no joke at all. Remains supersonic to 800 yards but clearly not the choice for that type of shooting. It shoots at MOA reliably. Given the standard bolt face, the long term reliability is also enhanced. I enjoy the other uppers for specific scenarios, but the Hamr is a 1 and done AR15 caliber with some extreme versatility. I find the 150 grain bullets pretty optimal unless night hunting varmints where flatter shooting really pays off. Fortunately, it shoots the 110 grain bullets equally as well if not slightly better.
@bill7379

Ammo is easily available. Wilson has a sale right now. Super easy to build a second upper for a standard 5.56 and be able to hunt deer with your AR. Ballistic performance far out paces 300 AAC. Mag issue is the same between 300 HAM’R & 300 AAC. With more adoption ammo cost will decrease etc.

I have a 300 AAC and found out about 300 HAMMR after my suppressor got out of jail. Very interesting concept, but I find the versatility of 300 AAC to be more valuable than the supersonic performance of 300 HAMMR. A 110 or 120 Barnes TAC TX is more than enough for deer out to 100 yards in Wisconsin, which is all I need. And for anything further than that there is 6mm ARC.

I have a friend who wants one because his wife likes the AR platform. She has been hunting with a 30-06. He has favored the 30-30 lever for a very long time. They are getting a little bit older and more recoil sensitive. The 300 HMR is a very practical solution for her as it is similar to a 30-30, where they hunt is very often with a lot of brush and foliage, and the ease of use in the AR platform. He plans to reload. I think that it is a perfect fit for them.

I am surprised you didn't talk about the 350 Legend here. I was considering the 300 Ham'r but ultimately chose the 350 Legend once I saw some field performance of it take hold on RU-vid. If someone's goal is to get deer hunting performance out of an AR-15 with only a barrel and magazine change then the 350 Legend should be an option on the table. With better infrastructure, I think 350 Legend is the better choice for most people. If the 300 Ham'r is a less performative 30-30, then the 350 Legend is your less performative 35 Remington.
@Fulcrum205
@Fulcrum205 Год назад
Yes but for handloaders there is a vast selection of 30 cal bullets. 35 cal has really only had one sustained commercial success (35 Remington) and there aren't any rifles being made in that caliber at the moment. The selection of projectiles in 358 are either designed for big 35 Whelen/358 Winchester power or round nose lower velocity 35 Remington. I don't really see the utility of 350 Legend outside of a very specific regulatory requirement. Even then why wouldn't you just hunt with a lever gun in places requiring a straight wall cartridge? A Marlin 1895 in 45-70 far out performs an AR shooting 350 Legend.

Bill Wilson designed this cartridge specifically for Texas wild hogs. It out performs 7.62x39, 6.8 spc and even 6.5 Grendel to a certain degree. And yes, speaking of combat, this cartridge could EASILY serve as a military infantry caliber because you have that same 30 round 5.56x45 capacity in a much more powerful albeit not as fast shooting caliber. And that 250fps advantage is over 7.62x39, not blackout.

We use the 130gr speer on hogs and its wonderful!! From the 110 gr to 150 gr ammo when suppressed has even less recoil (so no recoil at all) and very quiet (using the omega 300). I should also mention if it has not been already WC also has Ruger Ranch barrel swap kit for the 300 aac or 223 Ruger's. Its a 16" barrel length and threaded. Highly recommend - we use it ALL the time - great to have a bolt action option for the Ham'r.

I am very pleased with mine. Living in the eastern US, this it has become my "one gun." Whitetails, varmints, and its a more capable defensive rifle than my AKs or my other ARs. The handloader's AR. Super cheap to load for, especially if you are trimming down rage pick up 5.56 brass. (Wilson is also offering loaded ammo at very fair prices) I've not done it yet, but the twist (1 in 15" typically) and powder capacity are appropriate for cast lead bullets, further reducing loading cost, if you cast bullets. That's a whole other can of worms. That said, once I get into casting bullets for 30 cal, I'll swap a barrel on one of my other ARs for lead only plinking, as I don't want to risk leading my main rifle. This cartridge has converted me from a 7.62x39 AK guy to an AR guy. Now I can use optics. whohoo!

the .300 Blackout is basically a .30 caliber magnum revolver cartridge without a rim. Loading it down allows for decent performance with a suppressor. I've had this crazy idea of doing something similar to the 5.45x39 but using a 10mm bullet which would fit nicely where the shoulder tapers up. You'd have the option of loading up to pressure for serious terminal performance, or longer bullets for big bullet weights and suppressed operation.

It is extremely close to all ballistics of the 123 and 158 loadings in the x39. Even Wilson uses it as the comparison in several published chrono sessions. Infact. Someone made a Hornady test of the 123 x39 SST and the 300HMR SST load against gel, armor, pig, and vehicles. No discernable difference noted.

There is no comparison. Especially considering the bullet weight and BC options of 300 HAM'R. A 16-18 inch 300 HAM'R is 200-400 fps faster than 7.62 Soviet. Add on another 150fps for a bolt gun. An 11.3 inch 300 HAM'R meets and exceeds a 16 inch AK all day. Maybe the AK velocities seems comparable IF it's fired from a 24 inch barrel, but most folks have a 16 inch. You most certainly don't have to like or value the round, but don't invent inaccuracies (aka lies) about it to justify your biases.
@Ben-ry1py
@Ben-ry1py Год назад
@@The10thManRules how can they be incomparable when Wilson combat, the creators, compared them on their own website? According to the creators of the 300hamr, the 125 gr sierra has a MV of 2520fps and the 7.62x39 has a MV of 2365fps. That's a difference of 155fps. Both using a 16.25 inch barrel. That's a good advantage to the 300hamr, but not between 200 and 400 fps faster. And yes, if you handload to the max you can get more out of the hamr but you can push the 7.62x39 harder too. If they both cost the same money to shoot I'd pick the hamr any day, but ammo for the hamr is about twice what you can find SP 7.62x39 for. You can do everything the hamr can with the 7.62 only at shorter distances. I live in western NC where 100yards is a long shot on game. The 7.62 is perfectly comparable to the 300 hamr. I'd still love to have one, but my 308 can do what the hamr can't...elk, moose, so I'll probably never buy one. Cheers to lots of, comparable, options. 🍻

I totally understand the infrastructure issues you mentioned in comparison to the .300 Blackout, but it should also be noted that the Ham'r is much more economical to shoot if you are buying off the shelf ammo when compared to the Blackout. Definitely a good reloader's cartridge. Ive pushed a 135gn as fast as 2650fps without pressure signs in an 18"bbl using CFE-BLK. The only problem is that powder gets REALLY dirty when you stuff that much in the case so I tend to keep the load in the 2550-2600 range where the burn is cleaner. As for short barrels, It uses powders on the slow end for blackout so it can work really well in a short barrel, but not quite as short as blackout. The shortest I have tested is 11.3" getting 2400-2450fps out of the above load. The best part is how soft shooting it is for the performance.

I described exactly this cartridge to a buddy years before it was introduced. That was way back when I was getting setup for 300 blackout . I have several 300 blackout rifles I don't have any interest in suppressor and I have never loaded subsonic ammo. It's cool that blackout can do that stuff but the performance with 110gr and 125gr fully justify the existence of the cartridge to me for pigs. I use my 223 neck splits for my 300 blackout s. So it's a very economical round for me. I have since decided I'm OK with the 300 blackout level of performance because it's good enough and the less the blast and recoil the faster I can get out hastily aimed fire. Which is in my opinion the reason behind using an AR for hunting. I also have a 20" AR47 that shoots great and while ballistically superior at the muzzle, and has more blast flash and recoil , it is in reality due to differences in available bullet bc not much more effective than the blackout ( which BTW has more KE at 300yds due to superior 308 bullet selection and bc). I can shoot the blackout a good bit faster.
