Mark and Jim surprise attack Ryan Muckenhirn with the 7x64. Wait, that came out wrong. Ryan is OK…. We invite Ryan to chat with us about the popular-in-Europe 7x64, but don’t let him know the topic at hand until we begin recording. That should clear things up. A listener request, this interesting 7mm cartridge will make quick work of most critters. Listen in to get Ryan’s take on it, as well as hear Jim somehow weave in a challenge to all of Europe. Thanks a lot, Jim.

Ryan righted himself, but the 7x64 is closer to the 280 Rem than the 7mm rem mag. It’s very close dimensionally to the 280 as well. I bought a Sako 85 Bavarian in it and I can’t tell a difference in performance between my 280 rem 700 mtn rifle. Both are very balanced rounds

I only knew this off of top of my head because an old buddy was a .280 REM madman! .280 is actually 7x64.5mm, load data as mentioned is interchangeable. I also found it funny that Ryan said 1957 for the 7x64 when that's actually the .280's birth year! haha it took Remington 40 years to try and re-invent the wheel.

Here in South Africa we tend to have a very sweet spot for the 7mm bore diameter with regards to the 7x57 and more over the 7x64 of late. With so much history dating back to the Anglo-Boer war, the Boers used the Mauser 98 chambered in 7x57 to great extend and effectiveness over the British Lee-Enfield .303. The 7x57 was used by the Boers for basically everything, from fighting wars to putting food on the table to protecting against wild animals like leopards, lions, elephants, buffalo, hippos, you name it. Today it is still considered to be a very fine and capable cartridge that can take down just about every game specie outside dangerous game here. From thick bushveld hunting with 175gr thumpers to open plains game with 140gr bullets, the 7x64 can and will do it as Ryan said "modestly" without being overly destructive. As with .30 caliber bore also being very popular here, it doesn't hit home like the 7mm's do as it is common here to hunt big game with a smaller caliber. .222-50 and .243 frequently put some big game on the dinner tables here. A little history of the 7x64, the 7x64 Brenneke was designed by Wilhelm Brenneke as a possible replacement cartridge for the German Empire during WW 1. Unfortunately for the Germans, the war ended before Brenneke's design could take hold and had to be left aside until the outbreak of WW 2 where he presented his design to the Nazi military command as a replacement to the 8x57 as it was ballisticly superior to the 8x57. The Nazi Military command kept with the 8x57 as their standard military issue and Brenneke's design had be side shelved again until the end of the war. After WW 2, military cartridges were deemed illegal for civilian possession as surplus military rifles were available at the time. The 7x64 was then introduced as a replacement option on the civilian market and quickly became one of the most popular calibers on the European continent as it's ballistic and terminal performance was superior to many other available calibers at the time. It's a ballistic twin to the .280 Rem, a necked down 30-06 case with a slightly longer neck to accomodate the longer, more ballistic coefficient bullets that the .284 calibers offer with almost the same powder charge as from a 30-06 with less recoil and felt effort. Just thought I'd babble a bit on this amazing cartridge. I absolutely have a love affair with 7mm bore diameter. I think my wife is jealous of that fact.🤣🤣 Thanks for the awesome work you guys put into your channel. Really enjoy the reviews. Keep up the good work. Greeting from South Africa🇿🇦

Hi Gents, thanks for this review, I live out here in South Africa and my CZ 7x64 is my go to hunting rifle out here in South Africa, I have used it to hunt everything from the small Duiker up to and including Eland. It is real easy to reload the cartridge and will group anything from 140gr up, in my case, 162gr. My entire family, wife, both sons and daughter in law have used this rifle to bag their first animals. The rifle is great at distance and pretty flat shooting out to 500yards. It has a great following out here in South Africa and I really hope we could get some reloading DOPE from folks from Hodgon, Nosler etc. Thanks again guys, 7x64 not only in Europe but great here in South Africa

Whenever you guys go back to old American hunting cartridges, I have three suggestions: 250 Savage- first smokeless cartridge to hit 3000fps, and the parent case of the 22-250 Remington. Originally offered in the Savage 99 and Savage 1920. 300 Savage- First attempt at equaling the 30-06 in a short action, and the inspiration (or parent case) of the 308 Winchester. Originally offered in the savage 99 and savage 1920. 400 Whelen- wildcat by Townsend Whelen, a 30-06 necked up to use 405 Winchester bullets. Use 30-06 basic cases or 35 Whelen cases. Using normal 30-06 cases will result in headspace issues (from what I’ve read). From what I can find, only ever offered in custom Griffin and Howe rifles.

British here 🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 I’ve shot the 7 x 64 Brennecke at driven wild boar in Croatia in the winter.The 7 x 64 is a cartridge that is in between a .270 and a 3006. It has the fast flat trajectory of a 270 Winchester and the thump of a 3006. I would not put it up there as far as a 7 mm Remington Magnum but more the 3006. And yes it is very popular among mainland Europe, not as much in Britain but mainland Europe it most certainly is, I think it is the preferred cartridge as it will take any European game. I speculate on this next point but I think it was made 7mm because the legal calibre requirement for shooting certain game in Germany was 7 mm and the only 7 mm I know that existed I believe during the last century was the 7 x 57 mm Mauser, so basically Brenneke gave it a bigger explosive charge for the same bullet. It, the 7x64 may have been used in ww2, i did read an article about it online but I can’t remember if it was or not.

The Minimum Caliber on Fellow Deer, Red Stag, Wildboar and Chamois in Germany is 6.5 with a minimum of 2000 Joule of Energy at 100 Meter. The 7x64 was created cause it was easy to fit in a regualar Mauser 98 System where the 7x57 and 8x57 has left room open. The 7x64 is nowadays most popular in France cause it is no Military Cartridge (they are not allowed to have Military Related Cartridges in Privat use) the 7x64 is for Continental Europe the same as 30.06 for American with the same punch. It fits perfectly between 270 and 30.06 and can handle every living Animal in Europe with good Balistics an manageable Recoil. The cases of 270 / 06 and 7x64 are the same with different Bulletdiameter. The 7x64 is more versatile than the 270 cause of the variety of Bulletweights available for 284dia is much more than for 277 P.s. it was not used bye the Military Brennecke designed it for the Military not only for Hunting as Sniper Round but it was not adopted

Greetings from 🇷🇸 7x64 with barrel 24 inches and 140gr bullets is for small to medium game and with 175gr bullets is for big game hunting (wild boars in Balkan countries are very big, males are 300-400 pounds). And 7x64 have very mild recoil equal to 308 but the energy of 7 Remington Magnum. So, the popularity of 7x64mm is in 7 pounds rifle, soft in shoulder, long range capable and lot of knock down power 😉

With the right bullet and an ethical, experienced hunter, the 243 Win is plenty for lots of game. It’s legal for elk hunting in New Mexico. While I would advise more for such a large, tough animal, there’s no doubt that a well placed 243 can get the animal down and dead! I haven’t utilized the solid copper or bonded bullets, I’m convinced that a Swift A-Frame or Nosler Partition would drive deep enough and expand sufficiently to cause mortal damage to an elk.

One of the most obvious differences I see in Europe, is that we use wooden furniture rifles, like Sauer 202 ect, and classic break action shotguns (side by side and over and under). We don't use a lot of "Black guns" like ARs for hunting.... it isn't well seen upon. And there is a lot of optic snobbery... Zeiss, Khales, Pecar, Smidt & Bendner scopes being huge over here...

The 8.5x55 Blaser looks like the round that Winchester should have made instead of the .325 WSM or Remington should have made as a short action ultra magnum (SAUM). It’s very similar to a WSM or SAUM case and .338 (8.58mm) rounds sell a lot better than .323 (8.2mm) rounds in the U.S. and Canada. My guess would be that Winchester didn’t want to compete with its existing .338 Winchester Magnum and Remington has had a history of terrible implementation of some really good concepts.

Yeah the 7x64 seems to fall between 280 rem and 280 ai in performance, with the 280 ai beating it by ~200 fps in 140 gr bullets.
@boredboiseboy

How is that possible when the difference between the .280 and .280 ai is only 100 fps in 140gr

Why are you saying it’s the German 7mm Rem Mag, isn’t it almost similar to the .270 Win?

It is more equivalent to your 280 rem and it was intended to be a german (sniper) military cartridge (but never was). Brenneke also designed the hunting bullet for that cartridge (TIG/TUG) which haven't high BC but are long and heavy. Hence the long free-bore and gentle angle of the junction cone.

I love how everyone tries to say that Brenneke was "experimenting with extending the Mauser case" right around the time that a bunch of Yanks started dropping extended Mauser cases all over the place from Springfields that were killing Germans. Brenneke necked the -06 up to 8mm, it didn't sell, then he improved the shoulder a bit and necked it down to 7, and made a small fortune. TO say he reinvented what Springfield had done 15 years earlier doesn't make a lot of sense.
@jonm3080
@jonm3080 2 года назад
That is actually incorrect. The 8x64 was not formed from a parent case. It was also developed before WW1 even started in 1910. This was the parent case for the 7x64, it was simply necked down for higher velocities. He used the 64mm as that was the longest that could fit in a standard Mauser BA as he was trying to improve the performance of German military rifles by simply rechambering them. Neither of these nor any of his other cartridges has anything to do with the ‘06. In fact, the ‘06 was copied from Paul Mauser.
@ronjones1414
@ronjones1414 2 года назад
@@jonm3080 sure, it doesn't have a parent case. He started with a blank piece of paper and just happened to end up with a case with the same rim diameter as the 8x57 family (your not teaching anyone anything) and the same length as the 30-06, but that is completely coincidental. Marketing geniuses never lie.

That cartridge is probably the twin of the 280 Rem. Except here, the 280 never caught on. We were seduced by the 7mm Rem Mag and never looked at 280 seriously even though the 280 does pretty much the same thing with one more round capacity and more civil recoil that is cheaper and in lighter rifles. I still don't understand the 280 AI. Just go with the Rem Mag. The 280 AI has been getting more love than the 280 lately from the ammunition manufacturers and rifle buyers and I don't understand it. I think the 280 was abandoned for no good reason except maybe the lower performing ammo at its inception. But once the cartridge designation snafu was over with, it should have seen greater acceptance and the perfect cartridge between the 270 and 30-06 it has always been. BTW, I don't own one, I have a 7mm-08.
