In Handloader issue 314 we did a Pet Loads article on the 10mm using a Colt Delta Elite. We used some of these loads and others to test this Colt. Check out the results they are quite interesting. Watch it till the end for a laugh.

@@AlaskanBallistics According to our owners manual it says it's operating range is 14-104 degrees F. So it sounds like it would be less than ideal and any temperature below that would effect performance beyond acceptable parameters. We use an Oehler Model 35P chronograph and that has been super accurate and reliable even below freezing. However anything below freezing is pushing it. A quote from the owners manual. "Systems typically operate at temperatures down to 0oF or -18oC if the battery can supply reliable power." It sounds like the battery is the limiting factor at low temps with this one. It may be worth looking into.

10mm - it's like 40S&W, but for men. LOL All jokes aside, I'm a "yuge" 1911 fan. I cut my teeth on the M1911A1 while in the Navy, and it is my favorite class of firearm. But I will also say that I used to believe that if a 1911 didn't shoot 45 Auto, then it wasn't really a 1911. Didn't matter if it was a 6-inch barrelled long slide to a 3-inch subcompact model, it had to shoot 45 Auto just as John Moses Browning intended (or so I had been led to believe). But then I got into reloading, and I wasn't limited to "typical" calibers. So I began branching out, and one is a Delta Elite. I've crafted light, range loads to very hot defense rounds, and I got to say that in my opinion, the 10mm is the ideal caliber in a 1911. That heavy all steel frame (except the MSH) just soaks up that snappy 10mm recoil and makes it very controllable. I still own several 1911s in 45 Auto, but I must admit that my two favorites are my Colt Delta Elite in 10mm and my Rock Island in 38 Super - just as JMB intended. +1 to Starline Brass, too!

The 1911 is certainly a very versatile platform! Thanks for sharing your personal experience and history with the 1911. I truly enjoy getting to read comments like this. Why people like this gun over that one and what they have learned along the way. I truly do love the 10mm and I agree with you in full I think the heavy frame soaks up recoil extremely well and I throughly enjoyed shooting this Colt! I really don't think you can go wrong with the cartridge, as you stated it's extremely versatile just like the 1911 platform. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment your experience. I agree starline makes a great product and at a reasonable price as well! --Jeremiah

Will it hold up to buffalo bore 220 hardcast, or can the gun handle them like the glocks can?
@HandloaderTV
@HandloaderTV 3 года назад
@@johnklatt3522 The Colt should be able to handle it, as I do not believe that is a +P loading, I would advise caution using high pressure loads through the colt as the chamber is not quite fully supported. However we did run some pretty hot loads through this gun and it functioned fine with no issues or excessive wear signs. Thanks for watching!
@dfsdo1
@dfsdo1 2 года назад
The fliers in those first groups were shot #1 of the series. Comments from the past indicate that the seating of the cartridge in the chamber in the first shot tends to be different from seating from the firing cycle. You may want to check this. Please respond, if you get a chance.
@HandloaderTV
@HandloaderTV 2 года назад
I have checked this in the past and typically what can happen is if the cartridge is not properly crimped the bullet will actually be pushed deeper into the case during cycling of the firearm and this can result in slightly shorter OAL compared to the first round. However when the rounds are properly crimped this becomes a non-issue and in testing I could find very consistent OALs during our testing. Great comment though and an important point to make for sure! Thank you for watching! --Jeremiah

Um can we talk about a 180 approacjing 1400 FPS?!? No published data I’ve tried got me close to that! In hot cartridges and loads like this, maybe discuss pressure signs/measurements on the brass? Also, with 231 loads, subs in a suppressed 10 mm are FUN. Using so little powder in a larger capacity case has lead to larger SD/ES in my experience. Gone through 16 lbs of 231 over the past year or so, but never even thought about 10 mm. Load data search tells me you could crank it up a touch. May get better SD/ES, cleaner, and still have a light practice load. Genuinely thought you misspoke when you said 4.8 gr. AWESOME content. Keep it up.
@HandloaderTV
@HandloaderTV 4 года назад
Certainly! thank you for watching and commenting! It is important to note that all loads should be reduced to the starting load and slowly worked up to maximum pressure. I want to start with a quote from our own Brian Pearce "Performance of today’s 10mm Auto factory loads can be rather confusing as each manufacturer seems to offer it with a variety of ballistics and pressure levels. Current SAAMI maximum average pressure is established at 37,500 psi. When loaded to this level, it is capable of pushing a 200-grain bullet to 1,200 fps or a 180-grain to 1,350 fps." In regard to the high-velocity load using accurate no. 7, the average velocity for that load was 1,369 FPS. This is a maximum load and probably should have been stated so in the video. The data can be found in Handloader issue #170. It should also be noted that the range that all the testing was conducted at was at an elevation of over 5,200 FT. This means the air is thinner and can result in higher velocities without exceeding the maximum pressure. Case head expansion was near max but within acceptable parameters. It is also important to note that not all 10mm chambers are equally supported and great care should be taken when using a lesser or unsupported chamber. We apologize for long the explanation, but we hope it answers all your questions. sounds like we need to get a threaded barrel and another suppressor!! We have noticed the same thing and very generally speaking the most accurate load is usually close to filling the case. We did do a little testing with some increased charges however accuracy seemed to drop off a bit in our test gun. However, think there is still plenty of room for experimentation. Thank you again for watching and reaching out! We are glad to hear that you enjoyed the content!
@09cjonescj
@09cjonescj 4 года назад
Handloader TV all of that is absolutely true for the myriad of 10mm out there, that elevation is something else! I assumed it was max, which is why I inquired as to the pressure signs. Many of us know how to be safe, but that’s extremely good info I might even move to the description. I’m no lawyer but reloading 10 safely is NOT a 1:1 translation from other straight walled rimless pistol cartridge reloading. Thanks so much for the additional info. Are individual issues of the magazine available to purchase?
@HandloaderTV
@HandloaderTV 4 года назад
@@09cjonescj Indeed it is confusing often times we like to test factory ammo to see what is out there and to give us an idea of what the max pressure looks like. The waters can get very muddy. Arizona is truly a very diverse state the elevation can greatly vary. I would say it is a max load for this gun for sure based off case head expansion and more importantly the velocity. Thank you for your inquiry we greatly appreciate your response and diligence with your research. We agree with you reloading the 10 will require a little more diligence and research just given the variation in information out there. Once you have it down though it'll be hard to put it down! Greetings Jeremiah, I bought some of the same rifle and handgun targets you have here. I noticed that all of your hits are centered around the target square as opposed to the bullseye. My question is, where are you aiming your sight picture? And why? Thanks.
@HandloaderTV
@HandloaderTV 4 месяца назад
Great question, I was aiming at the square and to be honest there was no particular reason with this handgun. There is an explanation on the bottom of those targets about how to properly use the box and the circle as well and how it correlates to your zero but most of the time I do not use that to be honest. It comes in more handy with rifles in my opinion but that is just me. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! --Jeremiah

A couple of those loads are really movin and obviously approaching max. I was wondering if you felt compelled to modify your Delta in any way to aporoach max loads with the 10mm? Any pressure signs? How has your case life been? I would love to pick up a 1911 in 10mm, and the Delta intrigues me because of its history. But some people warn against the use of full power 10mm in the Delta, and I was wondering what your thoughts on this was. All I shoot is full power 10mm through my Glock 20, and it has by some accounts the same issue with chamber support, yet I have had zero issues in two decades and over 10,000 rounds through a pair of G20s (a Gen III and a Gen IV).
@HandloaderTV
@HandloaderTV 8 месяцев назад
All loads are within the 37,500 PSI mark established by SAAMI and some go right up to that level so extreme caution must be used when working up loads as always. The only modification I have ever suggested is possibly replacing the recoil spring for a heavier one some folks like to replace the barrels but personally I have never felt the need. No pressure signs, velocity and pressure were all within specified guidelines. Case life has been good the loads that are pushing 37,500 PSI is certainly a little shorter but I still get at least 6-8 loadings with the Starline cases. However I probably don't keep quite as close track of that as I should I generally loose the cases before the primer pockets loosen. You can certainly shoot loads up to 37,500 PSI with the Delta Elite however chamber support could be better but it's still not that bad and can handle right up to SAAMI maximum pressure but I certainly wouldn't push it beyond that. I have heard a lot of good things about the Glock 20s as well though and for a utility type gun I think they are great. I also have a SIG P320 in 10mm and I carry that in the field regularly when not on horseback. It is a great gun as well. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! --Jeremiah
