You sir are very impressive. Most automotive technicians do not also do transmission work and in my experience most transmission experts only do transmission work. You are certainly a master of your craft and know every inch of these fords. Truly impressive and extremely rare to find someone with your level of talent and professionalism. I hope the dealership you work at realize what they have with you and treat you accordingly.

When i was at toyota, no one knew how to rebuild transmissions since we never had issues to the point they needed to be rebuilt. If a trans was bad, it was normally fubar and got replaced.

I rebuild 2-3 a week, if the seal kit or the CDF aren't on back order and I never replace the valve body, maybe that's because I'm greedy and want the 1.6 hours it pays to clean the valve body or because I know how to clean the valve body properly. Invest in the Valve Body Buddy clean brush kit and good 1500 and 2000 grit sand paper and it'll work like new!

@@azzajohnson2123in all honesty the outer shell seldom actually gives any problems in actual use. We mainly replace it because we visibly see the wear. The CDF clutch is usually the culprit that causes everything.

@@tymullen8350 damn, so Ram has managed to ruin Aisin too? I’m not gonna say I’m an expert but I know 6 guys with the Aisin who have no troubles and 8 with the 68re who have had a lot of issues, enough that remember them moaning that they should have upgraded. This is on tow trucks with no hills.

Yes they should be, although really in a technical sense nothing should be wearing. The "clutch" disks are intended to slip although they are made to handle some slipping. Widespread aluminum parts in transmissions aren't new either, Ford just isn't doing a great job making the parts in most cases, Chevy isn't doing so hot either.

My Aisin went out at 10,600 miles. 4 same trucks 2022 ram 3500 were at the dealership same time. Factory put a seal upside down in the drum.

Ussually dealers don’t overhaul anymore they just go in with a new transmission or used under warranty

We do overhauls depending on the extent of the repair. Usually we go through a cost cap analysis. Compare the overhaul cost vs direct replacement and whichever is cheaper gets done. Usually if the failure causes lots of other consequential damage to numerous parts in the transmission then a new unit is swapped in.

So if we are replacing the valve body because of metal in the unit won't be clutches also be contaminated with the metal? And if they are, is it there a chance of metal coming off those clutches and recontaminating the new valve body?

It's possible but kinda unlikely. The aluminum wouldn't have a very easy time impregnating the clutch material.

Does the drum issue cause slight vibration? Almost like a bad ujoint vibration? Everything else is mint. Shifts perfect. No shudder. No slippage. Just slight vibration from 40mph up

6R80 is definitely more proven. It's heavily based on the ZF 6 speed. Common issues are bad output shaft speed sensors that require a lead frame replacement as the sensor is built in to that unit. Also, less common but torque converter failures causing shuddering.

The thing is, those clutches have proven they can go 100k and I guarantee they will easily fo it again. You may replace them and the new part may be defective. The acronym for NEW is Never Ever Worked. 😅

I have a question are the transmission’s you are repairing is there a common denominator? Did the owners change the transmission fluid every 40,000 miles? Did they pull excessively heavy trailers? Did they do burnouts in the parking lot to impress their friends? What’s the main problem with the transmission is it poor design and planned obsolescence?

What's crazy is that my 6R80(2014 F150 5.0) has over 400k miles and has never broken down (I change the oil and filter and add some metal lube ever 1.5 years) more or less) . That 10R80 must have 100k max considering how pretty new they are

All transmissions suck these days because everything is boosted. Peak torque at low RPM is a recipe for transmission damage. All R and D money is going to electric cars.

Toyota just recalled 100,000 Tundras to replace the short blocks. I bought a small VW for the sole purpose that it has an Aisin (Toyota) transmission. No CVT crap. It’s toast after 5,000 miles. Everybody is making junk these days.

@@AlphanumericCharacters exactly. I’m not talking about the brand new cars they’re all unreliable with tons of issues. Older Toyotas (anything made 5 or more years ago) are super reliable.
