The Battle of Wanat occurred on July 13, 2008, at a remote outpost in Wanat, Afghanistan, where 48 U.S. and 24 Afghan soldiers were almost overrun by over 200 Taliban & AQ fighters. With only 11 days left before returning home, the Paratroopers of Chosen Company engaged in an over 4-hour long battle at close quarters; ultimately holding their ground in the end, 9 U.S. paratroopers were KIA during the fight and 27 seriously wounded, making it one of the single-deadliest battles throughout the War in Afghanistan. 11 Paratroopers earned Silver Stars for their actions that day, with SSG Ryan Pitts also earning the Medal of Honor.
This documentary was written by the Gold Star Father of CPL Pruitt Rainey (KIA in the Battle of Wanat) and was originally published by @BattleofWanat (original video link: • 11 days and a Wake Up ).

To my regular viewers, I understand this is not a normal video considering it is an hour and a half long and also not related to gaming; however, I want to have it on here for those that are willing to watch and learn about what these guys went through and to make sure their stories are never forgotten. I promise it is worth the time.

I served in 1RAR, my unit served with the 173rd in Vietnam, we share battle honours, the sky soldiers are a proud bunch. Thankyou for tell this amazing story, i made it through the whole thing keeping it together, but that beautiful little boy at the end just fkn broke me... to the chosen few, their fellow warriors & family left behind, respect, loyalty, duty, & honour will never be wanting for those lost.

Matt Phillips was a great guy when I knew him. We spent a couple years together in Georgia hanging out and having fun before I left for the Air Force. He once hitchhiked all the way across the country to visit me in California a few years later before he went into the army. It’s so sad to see him here on one of his last days. He will always be in my heart, and I will always miss him!

I remember hearing about this happening at the time. These guys went through hell at Bella and lost a lot of men because they were put into a horrible strategic position that is almost impossible to defend. RIP brothers!

Bless your heart heroes, rest in peace. Such a loss of brave young men. Why is it that they build these outposts in the lowest spot... Tears

what an unbelievable sad but heroic story and amazing and well done documentary. how this isnt one of the most famous docs out there is a travesty and a shame... it puts life into such perspective and no matter what is going on in life it could always be worse and you could always do more to help vets and all others despite the excuses that may stand in the way. Thank you for this and i hope to share with as many as i can in honor of the men who lived and died before, during, and since and i hope it can spread and affect as many ppl as much as it did me... wish everyone involved with putting this together the best wishes and everyone reading this as well... God bless you all!!!

The mind set of higher (Battalion and above) was "going home". This contributed to the decision to essentially leave on the ground decisions and support to the troopers there. Higher has a direct responsibility of what occurred at Wanat. 05/11A (Gardez & Khost 2003-4) We will never forget them..never!

I believe those in command did not learn for the mistakes made at COP Bella and made them again with COP Keating the following year, the two posts were very similar in terrain & situation, both ending with the same unnecessary outcome.

Command also wasn't held accountable for criminal negligence at a time when the US Army would prosecute enlisted personnel and members of the junior officer corps at the drop of a hat. There are plenty of examples of that sitting in Leavenworth right now. Sure seems like the Army will spare no expense when railroading sergeants and lieutenants. But prosecute a colonel or general for leaving these guys sitting in 120 degree heat without enough water, or the proper equipment and manpower while hundreds of Taliban mass nearby? It's insane that all of these guys knew they were going to be attacked, but Col Ostlund gets away with pretending not to know, and is found not responsible when it ends up happening exactly as they described!

Maybe you should have picked a different name other than "chosen few". That name has already been taken by the Marines that fought their way out the Chosin Reservoir in North Korea in 1950 outnumbered 10 to 1. You're not allowed to steal valor.
@Specter502
@Specter502 День назад
I appreciate what you're trying to do/say, I didn't choose the name, however. It's also not limited to only those great men and their actions. Chosen Co. decided that name for themselves and earned it in their own way, no one is stealing any valor. A simple search online will give you any details you want as to the explanation behind it. My utmost respect to the original Chosin Few of the Chosin Reservoir, as well as the Chosen Few at Wanat.
