Jim Baird Adventurer - 11 Days Solo Wilderness Camping in the Arctic Watershed - Moose Lake & Campfire Cooking Walleye Fish! On a wild camping trip, after a bushwhack in the canoe through remote, wildlands creek, I finally reached a far-flung wilderness lake and the North French River by canoe, outfitting in tow. Finally in the river, the major portage was behind me. Now I solo whitewater and paddle the first rapids of the expedition alone in the wilderness. Northern Ontario fishing for Brook Trout and Walleye along the way caught me nothing which was concerning. Right as I reached Moose Lake, I experienced a great Moose sighting when I spooked a Cow and Calf Moose and watched them swim across the lake. Then, unsure if the fishing would be any good, I took some casts with my Mepps 4 and started catching Walleye, a lot of Walleye! I caught my limit quickly and it was time to find a campsite. While searching, I found an old hunting blind and a big double rainbow appeared overhead in the drizzling rain. Then it was time for an epic fish fry and I cleaned fish for a lot of over the fire cooking. A heavy thunderstorm caught me by surprise and soaked me. I set up a tarp in a panic and had to cook while sheltered under the tarp. I stayed up late into the night eating round after round of fresh fish. It was delicious.
On this trip, I'm prepared with proper outfitting, including trail tape and ready to canoe whitewater and portage. This film series is about bushcraft survival in the woods where I’m truly alone in the wild, exploring and fishing Northern Ontario by canoe. Beginning on a remote river I reach via a forest access road, I solo wilderness travel to reach the advanced level whitewater of the North French River. I then paddle on the Moose River, completing the trip some 330 kilometres later in the community of Moosonee where I catch the Ontario Northland Polar Bear Express train. On this adventure, I solo rapids, catch Walleye and Northern Pike, trek, paddle and camp. What’s better than catching wild fish for a catch and cook over the fire in the wilderness? I also find a remote, trapper’s cabin, run multiple whitewater rapids, undertake long, bushwhack portages and see a lot of wildlife including Moose sightings.
