I was surprised by the list of banned names! I had no idea. I can't imagine why they would ban such normal names. Thanks, Edu!

FYI, it is not a ban, per se. Children born of native English-speaking parents can have the names in use in their parents' homeland. But why would a child born in Portugal, who eventually would learn the Portuguese language, be called Emily, Tom, or William, when there are perfectly usable Portuguese names that correspond to those English names such as Emíla, Tomás, and Guilherme?! What's wrong with keeping the Portuguese identity alive in Portugal, huh?! And tell me this: if my children born in the states had been called Miguel instead of Michael, or Catarina instead of Catherine, or Carolina instead of Caroline would their existence be exempt from name-based discrimination?!! Would they not be bullied in school, or be mistaken for Hispanics?!! Would they be given the same job opportunities, based on merit, if they had Portuguese first names?!

I'm sure that ban list got some reason for it. Im married to a Lady Albuquerque although it's not her first name. Foreign first names are not very common, but there are some. Brasilians started a very poor and unwise way to form first names, with half name from the father and the rest from the mother... It's a very stupid way, by the way... But, they can, so...

Please explain your use of air quotation marks at minute 4:09 in reference to Pedro Alvares Cabral discovering Brazil. The Portuguese did officially discover, in the 1500s, the land that would become known internationally as Brazil. Not only discover, but created the boundaries of that immense territory, defended it for more than 300 years against foreign invasion, sometimes at great cost both financial and human, and created the bases for a viable economy where there had been none beforehand.
