Life too short for long RU-vid videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
In this episode we take a look at the principle modulation effects (well, most of ‘em) offering up some tips and advice on how you might use them.
So often the people will run, screaming toward us, arms aloft fair pleading, “Pray ’elp me, Dan and Mick, for I desire to use wobbly effects but every time I do it sounds like blancmange in me lug’oles. How may I remedy this cursed affliction?”
And we propose, “Fear not ye auditorially anxious. For we possess the learnings to cure your cacophonous complexion with these 11 Great Ways To Use Modulation. Heed ye these teachings and carry forth the sonic delights within to whomsoever shall grant ye audience. Go forth and modulate!”
Or something.

This really makes you question and think about which effects you "need." Sometimes you want a particular sound, but other times you just want some kind of movement/adding of depth, and you see from this episode that a lot of them can work for that.

That movement Dan's talking about with vibrato is something I love to do with tremolo, especially on my acoustic shows. Very subtle, fairly slow. Just makes it sound more alive. First time I ever tried a wet dry rig I used tremolo and a ping pong delay. I sat between both amps while my brother in law played big open chords, and cried. So incredible sounding.

As I understand it’s that’s an effect in Pro Tools rather than played on the guitar - I believe the band don’t play it live either and rely on a backing tape (my acronym) - so it’s square wave tremolo but not using a tremolo pedal.

That part in Won't Get Fooled Again is actually a pre-recorded synthesized track, similar to what they did in Baba O'Riley. Fun fact: In the early 70's footage Pete Townshend can still be seen manually cranking the volume on his amp for solos, then rolling it back off.

The flanger as a chorus thing is why I love the Deco so much. It can get very chorus like, and even vibey, while also being flangy. I think I just made up a lot of words, but it's just an amazing pedal. Thanks as always for the show.

To: Dan and Mick Message: Can I make a humble suggestion? Take a look at the Anderton's tone room. They've got warm lamps on and strings of lights. There are warm and bright accents all around their room. The new pedal shed is still looking cold, dark, blue and a bit depressing. That black curtain feels like a dark void encroaching from your left and right and it takes up 1/3 of the total screen. I love your show. Your knowledge and experience have been so helpful to me. I continue to watch because the two of you are great players and I'm always learning. So thanks for that. The room could just be a bit easier on the eyes.
@OriginalBlueFrankie

Zinger - Actually I couldn't care less about that. It's more about the psychology of color. Think about how many hours you spend watching TPS. It would be nice if the color scheme wasn't depressing, which it is.

I use a vibrato in mono, but I run it before a short, subtle delay, and it kinda creates a natural chorus sound that feels less wobbly and structured than a normal chorus pedal. It's hard to shut off once I've started!

Yet another brilliant episode guys! I do a similar thing to number 5 with my bass. I put my CE-2W in the CE-1 mode and put the depth to max and rate at minimum. It instantly makes anything sound bigger and better!

Another thing I really love about Strymon Timeline is it's Dual mode in Parallel mode. On stage I usually go stereo using one main amp with quarter notes + modulations like Tremolo, Filter, Phaser etc. and the other amp with dotted eight notes with a higher mix and more repeats but without any modulation, with kill dry. So basically on the left amp you hear your main delay with modulations and the right amp with ONLY dotted eight notes without the modulation effects. It's literally amazing.

1. The ADA flanger sounded great. Best I've heard of it in a demo. Got to try this out. 2. The big knob on the fuzz with all the little value lines is amusing. My knowledge of geometry tells me it gives no more fine control than any other pot knob, but it is definitely gives an illusion of more control. It is a maths placebo. 3. Another technique is "subliminal tremolo." Set time of tremolo to be on the ones of the measure. You can't really hear it, but it adds movement.

I love this video, it inspired me to think differently about the gear I currently have and set it up in an entirely new way. I'm looking forward to really pushing my creativity with this. I've recently come into possession of an amp with built in tremolo. Using my pedals and such I'll be able to run a wet/dry amp setup. Opening new (to me) tones to create with.

The "Jet plane" modulation was done back in the day in one box. Ibanez had the Jetlyzer, which was a drive - fuzz perhaps - and a phaser in the same box. I'm sure there was also a box called the Jetphase which may have been from Roland. Both boxes came out in the late 70's from memory.

Mick, I always had trouble with Phaser vs Flanger as well. I think the way I delineate between the two is Flange happens "around" the notes and Phase happens "to" the note. Similarly, I think tremolo and harmonic tremolo act the same. Harmonic tremolo seems to happen "around" the notes and tremolo happens "to" the notes. PS. THAT FLANGER ON THE DELAY REPEATS! glorious glorious glorious. Thanks, guys and cheers!

Dan says, "I am rethinking my approach to my organ now!" That's ace. It always needs proper attention says a 50 year old or it can have as many problems as an old an old tape delay. LOL. But seriously, this is another fantastic show. I have a Subdecay Vagabond term/harmonic trem that has an Env Shift knob that allows increases or decreases the speed based on amount of pick attack. Subdecay has some very interesting things, btw.

Surprise flavor of awesome: the wet/dry Dimension at 31:20 ... It almost sounds like a slow Leslie cab! Massive tones!

A couple of suggestions on episode or reoccurring episodes - "Hidden Gems", "Sleeper Pedals": each week or month search out these hidden gems/sleepers and study and present. And "Making The Inexpensive To Priceless " making the inexpensive pedals work to it's greatest potential! Love the channel!

I think that would very probably cause the prices to rise, just like what happens to old people amps reviewed by Johan segeborn. But it would be interesting nevertheless 😁😆

Shame on you, Mick for not knowing your Who catalog!!! TBH I’m no expert, but I believe what you were thinking of was Won’t Get Fooled Again. However the sound you’re thinking of was a synth! I don’t believe Pete was a big tremolo user

Ross Wardrope I sold my VB-2 back when they were still going for $250, only to see them climb to $500+ before the VB-2w came out.

@@danielakerman8241 I'm pretty sure you're right - as far as I know Pete Townsend used synths with sequencers for that and I think Baba O'Riley and Who's Next. But there's no shame in that. Sometimes remembering things in front of a camera is harder than in front of a computer. Great episode, guys!
