I'm stoked that he talked about how it feels to connect with Electric Wizard for the first time. Hearing Return Trip off of Come My Fanatics was a pivotal moment for me personally. So heavy, so ugly, but so groovy. Yob, imo, are doom Gods in their own right, so it's cool to hear one doom god give props to the other. This was a good vid. It'll be interesting to see what bands in 20 years are saying are their inspiration. I'm sure Yob will be on there, as will Cough, Windhand, Primitive Man, Pallbearer.

I don't know much about Doom Metal (How many genres are there now? The more the better!), But always a Metal head/Hardcore fan. I was around 15 years old in the early 80's, and a friend's older brother, who'd been to LA in 80' and caught the Hardcore scene popping up, would drive us to "all ages" shows in Syracuse, NY. We went to see Black Flag on the "Slip It In" tour, and I was totally blown away by their opening band, very different and very Metal, which was strange at the time. At least together. That band was Saint Vitus! I was blown away. Very heavy, reminded me of the 70's. A band I'll never forget seeing and experiencing. Early 90's we found an album that will forever be a Classic, timeless album was Monster Magnet's "Spine Of God". One of my favorite albums ever! And much of this Doom Metal seems like it came from this style. Very refreshing! I hadn't heard most of the bands mentioned in this video, but some great stuff, whatever the genre, lol! Thanks for the list. I'll have to check some of them out! 🤘🤘

Mike has been a longtime inspiration to me...it's weird, cuz I didn't really get YOB the first few times I saw them...I saw them early in their career, they weren't quite the juggernaut they are now, and Mike hadn't quite crystallised what yob was to be..it was experimental, wreckless in a good way...I respected it, but couldn't quite handle it for a whole set worth.....we both worked at guitar stores in Eugene (me at lame ass guitar center, him at cool Mckenzie music) and we sent eachother customers...I sold him a red les paul at one point, gave him the best deal I could!! (I wonder if he still has it?) He invited me to high on fire at the samurai duck, god bless him,..and I just wasn't ready for it...I kick my self thinking I just walked out of that show after a few songs...(it was as much the few people there that were kinda assholes as the fact that I didn't quite get the music )then a high school aquaintance turned me on to his band, buried at sea, ..and he left his amp and guitar at our jam space...it was a modded marshall (I think he borrowed a cabinet from me if I remember right) and a kramer with an aluminum neck....I had so much fun playing that guitar tuned to some really low open tuning, then I started to listen to the album more, and I finally got it.. I am far from the doom afficionado that Mike is,..( I like all kinds of stuff), but I finally found out about sleep and electric wizard, and learned of the awesomeness of Matt Pike, and gained a greater appreciation for bands like neurosis, cathedral, etc...no one probably cares about it, but I do...I love Mike...one of the greatest musicians of all time IMO...and though we aren't close, I can count him as my friend...I caught YOB's set opening for Neurosis at the hawthorne theather in Portland a while back, and it was probably the best live rock show I've ever been to...the sound engineers really had it dialed...the bass was poppin, shakin shit off the rafters that had been up there for a long time...gold

Everthing from YOB is in my list, Clearing the Path to Ascend is for me most surprising, intense and shocking piece of art for me, still, like when old times you have your most favourite musics but after hundreds of listen it does not creeps you, its regular and not goosebumping. Along all music experience, YOB is broke this on me. For countless years, even now talking about every single song of them still gives goosebumps, fresh and intense as if it is like first listen. One of my favorite live moments was Yob on Roadburn (one of many great gigs there, think they were playing The Great Cessation fully that day). At the end of the gig Mike lifted his guitar by the neck and bellowed out a primal roar, and you could tell that he had a great time, too.

Buried at Sea and Unearthly Trance were definately a couple other bands that got me into some of the more abrasive doom. Monarch and Ocean as well!

What a great video. Loved hearing Mike talk, would gladly listen to him talk about doom / metal in general as long as he wanted to talk! Electric Wizard's Dopethrone was one of my real intros to doom metal, and got me into the genre, and Yob are now one of my favorite bands. Absolutely stellar stuff. Gotta make it to a show one of these days!

What a great interview. For me the list would have to include Crowbar, Melvins first two albums and Soundgarden's "Loud Love". Many may scoff at my Soundgarden pick but their tune "I Awake" is doom as fvck for me.

Dude 'Fourth of July' is in Drop G and is a straight Doom tune. Not to mention how drone-heavy a lot of their riffs in Drop-D tuning are.

wow, great lineup! Most of this is familiar to me, but some of it is brand new, so I'll be plugging in and exploring some of this. Thanks for sharing Mike! YOB brings together so many of these influences, just based on the stuff I'm familiar with in your list, and I dare say that YOB itself would be on many a Doom list!

This is probably the first time I've ever heard anyone publically praise Lee Dorian's vocals. Lee is an underground legend and a lot of people like Cathedral, but they are a good example of one of those "Yeah I love the riffs, just not the vocals" bands. I still couldn't imagine Cathedral without Lee, good on you Mike!

Great list by a true bard. when i think back about what Sabbath perpetuated and what became of it my mind generally goes to very distinct time and place. Trouble is definitely high on the list along with (ALL) Church of Misery’s offerings. Neurosis, Melvins, Monolord, Windhand, Witch, Fu Manchu, Witchfynder General, Cathedral! Thanks to Mike and Revolver!

Sleep was my intro into doom metal and the genre and its so good to see new bands making that sound evolve into something else. I don't think i would have found my current favorite band Rickshaw Billies Burger Patrol without looking back at where it all started. i aslo suggest some underrated bands like Castle rat, SLUGG, and Gnome

Great list Mike. Glad to hear the Man's Ruin shout out! Overall really great history for the younger listeners. This list stands on its own, but I'd also add Noothgrush and Church of Misery (who also had a Man's Ruin release) from the same generation of bands.

When I just discovering the world of metal properly via the NOLA crowd (CoC, Crowbar, Down, EHG) and past maybe some of the more obvious suggestions (Acid Bath, EW, Sleep) from that pathway, Illusion of Motion was released. Wow. Everything about that record sounded so fresh, mysterious and unique. It still holds up today too. This year, I go to Desertfest London 2022 for the first time in 7 years after catching the first few editions and the predominate reason is Mike - for Yob and his love (plus promotion) of Spirit Adrift. Thanks dude, stay strong. Don't forget Middian too! Bless.

If Mike did Ted Talks I would be here for it 100%. I remember the first time I saw the video for Cathedral~Autumn Twilight and Kyuss~Green Machine on Headbangers Ball it flicked a switch in me. A couple of years later I was working at a coffeehouse and J. Younger handed me a copy of a band he just produced. That band was Fu Manchu and the album was The Action Is Go! That opened the entire world of stoner rock for me. All of these bands and labels are forever intertwined and related.
