I'm born and raised in NL and sort of accustomed with 3 kisses, but only with later generations. When I come to think of it and see it, 3 kisses is such an awkward concept on itself. 😂😅
i was always used to 3 till i started working at a bar where everyone kissed eachother once each time they would come in at work lol. now im not sure what to do anymore in any other situations
the law is very very clean on this: "First shalt thou take out the Holy Kisser. Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. "
i think the one kiss spread mainly due to internet, and as youngsters being super awafe that only in the netherlands this was a thing. than also teens began to hug eachother, like in other countries, instead of kissing, because 3 kisses was sooo awkward. and now we silently agreed upon 1, less awkward but more warm than just a hug
Idea for another video: how to survive office lunch. From canteens with individual plastic packaged pieces of ham or cheese, to the conversations and expectaitons of what to do.
I knew about the 3 kisses, but the history and how the pandemic was helping the awkwardness are new to me. Thanks for the insight, and welcome back, @SurvivalGuidetotheDutch. Oh, almost forgot to say: The ending is amazing!!!
personally i opt for no kisses, not even for family. i feel like the younger generation is also moving away from the kissing greet, since it might be too intimate especially with strangers.
Hahahahha I'm 100% dutch, from Dordrecht, so technically the north, but ive always known (and hated) it to be 3 kisses. I personally prefer a hug, or 1 kiss with a hug. I kiss my mother in law 3x a year 3 kisses and thats her birthday/my birthday and new years eve. Thats my max. and even after 10+ years she keeps saying, we dont kiss right cuz you don't like that. INDEEED. I was looking for a video like this to explain to my friend from the UK and it was excatly what I was looking for!!!!
Funny, recently ran into this "problem" when kissing a Dutch lady who now lives in Switzerland. I automatically went for 3 because I have doing that most for my life. But she went for one. That felt weird 🤣
I was born and raised in The Netherlands with 3 kisses. Living in the US now, I've grown accustomed to hugs and now feel it's much better than kisses! No chance of lipstick stains on the cheeks 👍🏽😁
I'm an elderly Dutchman from Rotterdam and one kiss is good, two are fine, but three are too many. My impression is that the kiss as a greeting has lost much of its appeal anyway.
Nah. From the US but have lived in Paris and Nederland with a German/Palestinian boyfriend. 2 kisses in France, 3 kisses in Amsterdam, 5-7 in more eastern countries. Dropping the boy . I nannied for 5 yrs off at school I'd see lots of women kiss more than 5 times at drop off and lunch break. Much more stiff in Germany. I visited w my bf's mother many times but I never knew she liked me until after he died at middle age. We write back and forth and I'm wearing her son's hoodie that she sent me right now. Sorry, over long. But! When Dutchies come visit me in US the first thing is 3 kisses at the airport.
When I came to the Netherlands it was 3. I slowly took over the custom. When meeting new women, its 3 kisses. With guys, a handshake. As a gay guy though... Should I be giving 3 kisses instead?
Me and my ex both grew up in the west of the country. I spent the last decade in the east of the country. When we met again to talk, I went for the hug I give all my friends - she went for a cheek kiss. We both found the other to be too intimate, hahaha 😂
I absolutely dislike the whole kissing cheeks aspect of the Dutch culture. I'm a Dutchie too, and I haven't had any strangers doing the kisses thing fortunately. With family and friends I'm always firm on "No kisses" and 9/10 people seem to understand it. Handshakes and even hugs are fine, though I prefer handshakes over hugs, I'd never ever do the kisses.
Oh, so it's a Catholic thing! That's why we kiss 3 times in Brazil too. But usually only between women or man vs woman. Men don't do that between themselves. I think it's more of an Italian thing, from what we see on those mafia movies. Not sure it's a real life thing.
I met my wife in the south and at the end of our first date we said goodbye with kisses.. i'm from the north so on the third kiss i went all in for the lips :D
The habit of three kisses started in the 1950s in Brabant, the southern part of the Netherlands. It was a reaction against the soberness that prevailed in World War 2. Local people sought to imitate the abundant behaviour of Americans, and they took three kisses to be part of that.
I stopped kissing when covid started and will now forever refuse them. My family has re-started kissing but even though I'm the odd one out by refusing them, I feel so much happier because I've always hated it.
As a Dutch person, I reeaaly hope kissing dies soon. A handshake if you don't know someone ad a hug if you do (if people are comfortable with that, otherwise just wave) is the way to go. As far as I see gen-z is doing that already.
