The Napier Deltic engine when fitted to the Class 55 locomotive was fitted as a pair.And at full chat, sounded WONDERFUL!

The Blastoline Special "Tank Car" would fit in nicely here. The car is styled like an oversized 1930's hot rod and features a Continental AV1970-5B V-12 engine used to power an M-47 Patton tank. Owner Jay Leno drives this car on public roads pretty regularly, as he does with most of his cars, and has made improvements to make it more driveable, such as adding two turbochargers to improve fuel economy, which is currently 5 mpg or just over 2 kilometers per liter. Now that is the ultimate automotive penis extension...

EMD's 645 engine was EXTREMELY reliable until they decided to uprate it to 3500 HP. For years the 3000 HP turbocharged 16 cylinder EMD 16-645E3 was the standard against which all other locomotive engines were compared.

Same engine in the V8 saloon. The sp250 was known as the car that killed daimler, it was dropped when jaguar took over as they saw it as competition for the e type. Shame, as it was revolutionary. Glass fibre bodywork and first car to have all round disk breaks. Used by the police at the time as they were pretty swift. My dad had one, sadly we sold it a few years ago, now even rough examples command a hefty price tag as they are very rare.

Another note to add is that this was a hemi engine, design similar to the large Chrysler designs in the U.S.

that's the one, but I think they started off with it as a 2.5. then they made it bigger. unless the 2.5 was a straight 6 like the Austin healey. I'm not totally sure though.

1700 hp to pull a Messerchmit! I flew a couple of times in a a 240 HP Cessna and it felt like being a cannonball, I can´t imagine how is feel a plane like that when flying.
@Eo_Tunun
@Eo_Tunun 7 лет назад
I guess the craziest engine of all would be the Napier Nomad, an insanely complicated compound engine intended for planes, that basically consisted of an opposed flat 10 cylinder bolted on a jet engine that would at times serve as turbo for the piston engine, at higher speeds the jet would do the majority of the propulsion work. I never found any reports on how they ran or if they ever did, though.
@iambiggus

I like how you threw in an example of what the engine was used for when you could (e.g. planes tanks etc).

The EMD 645 engine was plenty reliable. It was when they began pushing it to its limits that it began to be a failure. The SD40-2 and SD40 models wouldn't have sold as many as they did otherwise. (3982, 1268, respectively.)
@silicon212
@silicon212 8 лет назад
Don't forget the GP40/-2, the F40PH, all of the stationary and marine engines, etc. The 645 was a very reliable engine. The F crankcase version had some issues early on, these were all corrected as time went on, but the 710 came out in 1984 as the 645 was pretty much topped out. Production of the 645 began in the mid 1960s and continued until the late 1990s.

Hi, nice video.. :) But you got the last one wrong, the Multicar engine was aircooled ;) The engine originally came from the Warchalowski FD21 that was produced in license for the "Traktorenwerke Schönebeck RS09" tractor by the "Motorenwerke Schönebeck". It later became the FD22 and then evolved in the 2 KVD 9 SVL and 2 KVD 8 SVL which ended up in the multicar. The tractor versions hat around 1 to 1.1l displacement and between 15 and 18hp. I have one of those tractors with the FD22 engine, pretty nice engine it is.. But due to the lack of good materials and experts from outside the engine wasn't the most durable. That is also why they lowered the output from 18hp of the original FD21 to 16hp on th FD22, only later with more development and changes the 2 KVD 9 SVL had 18hp again ;)

So..I don't know how to feel. My Honda makes about 140 hp, so I don't know whether to feel happy that my little 4 cylinder is as powerful as a 1950's-60's V-8, or embarrassed that a car that old can match the power of my Honda :/
@GudrezBilly
@GudrezBilly 8 лет назад
Well since horsepower is a mixture of rpm and torque, the old man easily surpasses your power, while chances are you could easily outrun him. I know my Honda can't go faster than our suburban though. And while my Honda screams at 5-6 thousand RPM, the suburban growls comfortably still at about 2500.

mostly a distance thing. we don't use trains for much beyond freight anyway. Inner city transit like metro stations use electricity because the wiring for it is already in place.

Unless the electricity comes from hydro power then your electric trains will be fueled from burning fossil fuel.

@jonsnow7092
@jonsnow7092 7 лет назад
db 605 does not necessary has 1700hp. it really depends on the boost level, engine version and the use of MW-50. it can range from 1475 to well over 2000hp. they have really large displacements, they are required to be able to put out all their power constantly (except for the mw50 or other boosts that are temporary). however, they were often rebuilt usually before reaching 100 hours of flight (in some applications, they could go over 200h, but in fighters, when pushed to their limits in combat, they would often last way less that 100h).

That engine has been tuned and turbocharged to over 1000hp for dragster use. They didn't need to add a turbo at the time, as the dart was a small, lightweight sports car for twisty british roads, that needed responsive power delivery, economy and low weight, completely the opposite of the large, thirsty and lazy revving american engines designed for sustained cruising.
@derpinbird1180
@derpinbird1180 7 лет назад
Lol serious doubts as to either. By the time you have a stock engine making anywhere near that power you don't have many stock parts of the engine left. And a 2.5 litre engine making 1000hp? Thats formula 1 spec coming from an engine with 50s metalurgy and 50s engine tech. And on top of that it was efficient?
@carpenterracing
@carpenterracing 7 лет назад
+Derpin Bird It's true! That's what we make from her. The cars well documented on the internet. The steel is practically Chrome Moly as original, block is close cast iron and the Ali heads are amazing well cast using the finest Ali from the 1950s. No expense was spared by Daimler with this engine and it put Daimler under when they couldn't sell enough of the SPs. Daimler was always about quality which is why royal families used them as their car of choice all over the world
@carpenterracing
@carpenterracing 7 лет назад
+Derpin Bird Just to clarify we use standard block, crank, rods, bearings, rockers, pushrods and oil pump. Cams standard but reproduced, inlet manifold stardard but cut off at the carb plates to weld a supercharger plate to it.

ME109 engine is built upside-down to modern "crankshaft below the piston and heads. Notice how low the exhausts are compared to the Merlin engine of the same era. The position of the engine made servicing critical parts much easier and got the planes back in the air faster than the Allies could.
@JustClaude13
@JustClaude13 7 лет назад
Quick notes: Deltic is very cool. For those not familiar with the engine; from the end view three cylinders form the sides of a triangle with the cranks at the corners. The 2.5 liter Daimler...I'm not sure whats amazing about a v-8. It's a little small, but not a patch on the 1957 Moto Guzzi 500 cc V-8. It was a potent engine for its day, but sadly the frame couldn't control the power. The bike was too dangerous to actually ride. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moto_Guzzi_V8 EMD 16-710: The 16 is the number of cylinders and the 710 is the displacement in cubic inches - of each cylinder. Another wild engine is the VW inline v-6 (VR6) with a 15 degree included angle and a single head over both banks. This is the basis of their W12, which is used in the big Bentleys.

Re the Daimler SP250: only 2.5 litres. 140 HP in the fifties was mighty impressive. Especially from 2.5 litres. That's about 152 cubic inch. About 280 HP from a 300 cubic inch V8 in the 50's would be impressive. And, it was a true hemi. There's plenty of googling to be done about them. Even looked like a mini hemi. The British Police bought a heap of them (can you imagine an English Bobbie in one of them?). They needed them because in those days the Bikies had Nortons and Triumphs that could do 100MPH, and the only thing on the road that could catch them was the SP250

the multicar engine is a former ddr made engine made by VEB Cunewalde, also not all are watercooled, the air cooled ones are the 2kvd8/8 (8/8 is the stroke/bore which means its what they call a square engine) before somewhere in the late sixties and after that got the type number 2vd8
