The 11+ Exam, taken by UK students in their final year of primary school in order to get into selective grammar schools, is commonly make up of four sections: Non-Verbal Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, English, and Mathematics.
In this video, we take a look at Roman Numerals - a really interesting way to represent numbers. Questions involving Roman Numerals can occasionally come up in the Mathematics section of the 11+. The question in this video asks "What is CDLXXV minus XIV?" and we look at the basic principles of Roman Numerals as well as how to answer this specific question.
We realise first of all that Roman Numerals use Latin letters rather than Hindu-Arabic numbers to represent numerical values. The most commonly used Roman Numerals are I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500, M = 1000.
Any numeral found before one of a similar or lower value is added to the sum, while one found before a numeral of a higher value is subtracted. The final numeral is always added to the sum. In this case, the sum refers to adding (or subtracting) the values of each letter used to represent a given number. So to answer this question, we find the value of the two numbers, subtract them using Hindu-Arabic numbers and normal subtraction techniques, and then convert the result back to Roman Numerals.
