This is my early journey into printing on a large gel plate (16x20). I've been gel printing for many years but never this large, until I went through a hard season losing my husband to brain injuries. I came across Fulton Sim at @artwhisperer88 who inspires many of us with his retro minimalist printmaking sometimes inspired from other modern art masters.
I'm inspired by Fulton, but going my own way of exploration with printmaking in an effort not to copy him. I hope I inspire you in some small way, too. If I can do this creative life, so can you. Remember, Dreams Never Die.
This is a great learning opportunity for everyone! Your first month is FREE! share.skillshare.com/5gims!67... (Not available in all countries)

Stunning results Kate! The first print reminds me of the Native American art of the Pacific Northwest with its strong graphics and bold colors, and the peaceful ocean blue background.

I'm really enjoying the variety of marks in your prints, particularly the variety of masks you use. The more linear ones have alerted me to new possibilities. As with ArtWhisperer88, I often feel you cover over some of your best results. While all of these prints are quite nice, to my eye, the white, buff, and ochre print, with a few black marks (43:00 in summary section) is the best of those you made in this episode. Lovely, subtle, and yet quite rich in varied tints and marks. But in any case, I appreciate your sharing your process, techniques, and all your lovely work!

@@KateWordArtat about 39 min..when you lay in the two blue horizontal stripes…. If you had of let that layer dry completely..… then roll a full wet layer (maybe the same as that top Pale colour)… over the whole plate..then lay paper over this “wet” layer…..press down well…now let it sit overnight… When it is completely dry you will be able to pull up everything off the plate …it will be spotlessly clean. I recon you will love the result. Try it with a small square on the bottom of your plate if it feels too much to do a whole large plate… cheers ❤

Thanks for your lovely comment. Typically, they are mylar or some form of acetate or plastic, like a subject dividers in school supplies. You can use sheet protectors, and now, I use Manila folders so I can discard them after using them a few times. I live where I cannot use indoor plumbing for cleaning the stencils. Basically, you can make your masks from anything, even copy paper for a 1x use! Just cut the shapes you want and go for it! Peace 🌿

How do you keep the paint from drying when you pick up your stencils. When I take that long, the paint is dry. Do you use a paint extendor?
@KateWordArt
@KateWordArt 3 месяца назад
Thanks, Linda, for your question. I'm always aware that acrylics dry quickly, but I don't use extenders. I do use heavy body paints (tube), although sometimes, I do use a fluid. I try to have paper ready and utilize the window of open time wisely. Have everything at the ready & work quickly. I believe my paper selection contributes to successful transfers also. I use 100% cotton papers for watercolor & printmaking, so absorption is vital. Feel free to get back with me if you have more questions. Peace 🌿
