Excellent job, Antonio! This is the type of content that makes RMRS THE channel. And YES, we want a part 2. You could even make it a short series. 🤓 Bravo, as usual...👏🏽
In Australia, RM Williams is seen as a heritage brand. Originally they produced boots for workers that needed durable footwear - now they’re the boot of choice for every Sydney corporate lawyer, director, trader etc.
RM williams has gone down in QC dramatically in the last 10 years.......the real "class boots" are Baxter of Goulburn (which you can get custom fitting 😉)
I have followed Antonio for years on the channel. Where is started for me to learn how to dress professionally and be taken serious as a young physician actually propelled me to learn about the theme of investing in myself, in education and skills to learn to be a high valued professional and man. It has helped me advance my career further than I could have imagined and quicker than almost all peers. Thanks Antonio!
Love the breakdown of the brand's history. My only hesitation is that some if these brands (Hermes, Burberry, etc.) have very prominent logos or garish brand printing, which goes against old money fashion (understated).
Yeah, I expected Antonio to mention that the higher quality (and more expensive) selections from these brands do not carry the logo so prominently. But I'm not sure if that's true, and would like to hear about it from the man himself. "Old money" isn't really a style that I'm invested in, but that's what I've heard. Would appreciate anyone who can confirm or deny my understanding.
Burberry plaid is ignored over here, it was destroyed by market stalls selling everything in it. We wouldn't entertain it now. Predominantly far east and americans buying it. If you had ever had the joy of going to Hermes and the attitude of the sales assistance unless known to them, move on. All these brands have overpriced logo junk and very expensive classics. Zegna suit and blazer, gorgeous fabrics, and timeless classics. But you need to understand the various sub brands under the overall business. Much like RL with polo, purple etc. The Polo horse is as tacky as any logo, which honestly leaves RL really only supplying Purple label.
Yes that over logo stuff really sucks but I've heard that many of these brands will have stuff of even better quality but without the logo for those like us looking for it and willing to pay the slightly higher price
It's the same as RM Williams.......the cheap end are labelled on the pull tabs and soles.....the high quality boots have not got ANY overt labels (you have you customer file number written on the inside tongue)
Yes please, make a part two. Also, make a video on the unwritten rules of old money. The color of your carnation is a good example but there are many more.
The sheer information supplied in your videos is like watching a documentary! This is why I completed the Style course you offer and would recommend it to everyone interested in looking and feeling their best!
And of course the great Viennese tailors Bumbërschaumer und Gerstaflëßermeier who make suits that are so exclusive they are known only to 5 clients, two of whom own the company.
Antonio and Aaron M(Alpha M) are legends. Watched both gents for years, they've helped with my style. Always get compliments when I'm out. Thanks gents
Saville Row and Jermyn Street. Both are amazing. I have been to both. The oldest perfumers in London are in Jermyn Street. When I walked through those streets, I wish I dressed up better because I would have felt better going into some of the stores.
We Gen Xers have a soft spot for Polo. It was THE uniform for us in our teen years in the 80s. I worked for weeks to save up for a Polo oxford dress shirt. Now I still buy Polo especially when I see a sale, seasonal clearance or get to an outlet store. Not quite the same quality as the vintage pieces I have but some of it is still better than the flimsiness of other "high end" brands. A few years ago I was at an upscale thrift in Vancouver. I was wearing the green Polo Golf ball hat that came with the cologne back in the 90s. A young Asian man came up and asked if I would sell it to him. I politely declined because it was a sentimental gift. I have a piece or two from some of the other brands mentioned but my heart is always with Polo.
Detest Polo's. They are a low rent awful item that are great for a million different job uniforms but that's where they should stay. Time to rethink and move on from a pizza shop uniform chap come on.
If there is a part 2, you should probably add Aquascutum to that list. They began on Regent St. since the 1850s and have outfitted Royalty, politicos and the best dressed English celebrities such as Michael Caine since their inception. While Burberry caught the public's attention, and has benefitted tremendously from their superior marketing campaigns, Aquascutum outfitted the English Army with trench coats in WWI and WWII and their waterproof wool fabric (their invention) was used in their coats for officers in the Crimean War. Their quality is their hallmark more than their fashion status is. When Edmund Hillary first scaled Mt. Everest he did so having been outfitted by Aquascutum. They also have their own unique club check pattern that is a great scarf alterntative to all those ubiquitous Burberry ones both real and fake. I have a vintage lambswool overcoat of theirs that might just be my very favorite article of clothing that I have ever owned. It has held up incredibly well despite being my main winter coat for many years now.
It’s always about what you’re trying to get out of it. Are you just trying to tell Time? Are you trying to smooze in a certain group? Just a pop to certain outfits?
Turnbull & Asser,Edward Green, Anderson & Sheppard,Huntsman,Crockett & Jones,Drake’s are well worth to check out. Cifonelli,Zegna,E.Marinella,Brunello Cucinelli,Cesare Attolini.
I just bought a Zegna velvet coat - every time I wear it, I have strangers compliment me on it. It is really worth every penny....there are just a lot of pennies hahah...
Antonio. Just discovered your channel. Thank you for the informative and helpful content. What a kick- being recognized on Savile Row by a young man that got his job, largely in part due to watching you!!! Talk about validation. Wow.
Blancpain is the oldest watch brand not VC, secondly you mentioned Barbour but did not mention Belstaf. Then Bally should have an honourable mention as well; I’ve noticed the style and maybe the quality of Bally in USA is different than Europe.
I started having bespoke clothes made about 5 years ago. Once you wear made to order footwear you'll want more. I've made several trips to London for shirts slacks and ties. For suits I've found great quality and affordable price in Belgrade Serbia. One place most bypass are 2nd hand stores. In London Hornets is awesome
Antonio! I’ve been watching your videos for years. Thanks so much for the time and effort you put into making this content for us men to feel better and more confident. I love the jacket you’re wearing in this video! Would you mind sharing where it’s from, or something we can link to find it or something similar? Thanks so much again!
Hello, I really love your channel, you’re always on point, I like your educational style and that you teach a lifestyle, not just how to look good. I wish I would find a channel like yours for female audience.
Great video. From Germany some quality foot wear are Josef Seibel shoes. They are high quality, from hiking to formal, and have also wide and larger sizes.
Curious about winter jackets: Herno, Moncler, Canada Goose, etc. Would love to see a video comparing and going into the history of these parka brands. Especially the less known brands like Herno.
So funny story. When I was younger (maybe like 6 years ago) while I understood that some clothes were quality, I didn't really know brands. This older lady gave me some jackets that were her first husbands, since they were about my size. I could tell they were nice but, as I said, I didn't know brands. They were a bit longer in the arms, but fit shoulders and in all other proportions. I found your channel about 3 or 4 months ago, and started learning about clothing a bit more. Turns out the jackets were Brooks Brothers. I was shocked that she gave me such nice garments. Thank you for helping me expand my knowledge of clothing and just general style
Here are some relatively new companies in the USA that sell clothing in an "old money" style, meaning classics that are versatile: Civilianaire, Billy Reid, and Peter Millar. You may want to check them out and see if any should be included in a future video.
A fun fact on the Burberry trench coat. Back in WW1 they were worn mostly by officers and other higher military personell and if they got shot folks would risk their head and run out into no mans land to get the coat off them. That’s how good they were back then. Mostly due to the conditions in the trenches and they were waterproof and durable.
I love that you gave shoutouts to the Savile Row boys, their work is superb. I have a black wool topcoat made by Logsdail, and it's stupendous. Also, thanks for mentioning the Equestrian brands, Burberry, Hermes, Gucci, etc, and the often overlooked, Penhaligon brand. Their scents are second to none.
I would add to the list Jos A Banks (especially their chinos and tattersall shirts), and also from Savile Row, Alexandre of London...Their Harris tweed jackets are some of my favorite pieces in my wardrobe.
RIP Brooks Brothers. The quality had been falling precipitously for years and in 2020 it was acquired by the ironically named Authentic Brands Group. B squared, as it was affectionately known is now for all practical purposes, a purveyor of fast fashion.
Churchill has his last inside George Cleverley next to Charlie Watts and Ralph Lauren's (somewhat small) last. Acquiring a Huntsman bespoke jacket was definitely a milestone for me. Lacoste Paris line of polos are top notch that is to comparable to top polo makers like Sunspel. I would love to see a part II from my favorite brands that you teased like Turnbull & Asser, Lock & Co., etc
ok know Ralph Lauren and Burberry, didnt know some of the others. Thanks. I am not in a place to afford the style i want , however finding patience and looking for good conditioned pre owned helps me step toward what I like. Its about balance. Learning good tips from you and Gentlemans Gazette that is helping me elevate my style now that I am a man in my 50's
Antonio, nothing is old money if it is manufactured in Asian sweatshops. Unfortunately, Brooks Brothers and others are making some or all of their pieces in these high margin, low quality slave pits. That said, I will make it to Savile Row or bust! Thanks for the vid!
@highqualityclothinggggg Hong Kong and Japan, but these are tailors and not manufacturers. Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, and others have gone to the Asian sweatshops that, in some cases, are forced labor camps. The quality of these manufactured pieces is piss poor.
If you make another one, perhaps mention Hart Schaffner & Marx? It's strange how they were the largest manufacturer of suits in the world as recently as the 1980's and now hardly anyone knows the name. They even owned Burberry for a while. In the 1960's the got large enough the government hit them with an anti-trust action.
After seeing Turnbull & Asser at the end of the video, I think a video on reviewing brands associated with the James Bond franchise would be entertaining.
