Medications are often the first treatment used for hip osteoarthritis.
And they can certainly help reduce, even remove, pain for a short time...but what are the side effects?
What about the medication problems that doctors never talk about?
Problems like addiction, dependency, reduced effectiveness....
...and the cost of pain medication both financially and the unseen cost on your time and quality of life.
All of these factors and more are important to consider when using medications for treatment of hip arthritis pain.
In this video, Dr. David shares 11 reasons why medications are not a good idea for treatment of hip arthritis.

I only take meds if the pain is keeping me from working on re-balancing my muscles, or keeping me from good sleep. Maybe once or twice a week.

I signed up for your hip program today. I’m tried of being stuck in the cycle where I get better and then re inflame my hip. I know you’re right about balancing the mussel groups so as to resolve the issue permanently.

Had knee replacement. Drs are so concerned about how much opioids they give but less concerned about nsaids. Ended up with a bleeding ulcer and hemoglobin of 5.5 six weeks after surgery. I have hip arthritis so they gave me low dose opioids and nsaids round the clock. Ended up in the hospital with 4 units of blood. I take opioids daily for back and hip pain because of back fusions and hip replacements. They wouldn’t increase the dose of opioids just increased the nsaids. NSAIDs are just as dangerous as some opioids.

I do exercises you teach. They are so amazing. I take no drugs/medicine whatsoever. I am grateful for you ever time I use your glute exercises for sure. And your knee swinging exercises each morning.

I could not believe how much pain I was in when I had to be med free for 7 days before my hip replacement surgery. I had been taking advil morning and evening for years. Six months after surgery your videos are helping me understand how I can hopefully avoid replacing the other hip. Thank you.

Hey there! So sorry to hear about the pain you were feeling while not taking the medication. In order to avoid surgery on the other hip, we need to address the root muscle imbalance. This will help ease the tension and pain you may be experiencing. Here is a playlist you can check out when you have the time: “Hip Replacement Help” ru-vid.com/group/PLJVIPiFvv1mbtxiBV-dKJseYEifBGANyT Hope you continue on your road to recovery and we are here to help ! Please reach out if you have any questions :-) All the best, - Team EPMPT

I have no pain in the other hip, just limited range of motion. I had dysplasia and arthritis that I believe resulted from trauma from injuries in the hip that was replaced. Your videos have really helped me understand how to move forward. I was told by docs that the other hip is also bone one bone and would need replacement right away, that it may blow out soon because it was compensating for the hip I had replaced...but I have no pain. I'm following your advice and really expect not to need more surgery. Thank you so much!

So far even just the glute part of this is working towards making me better, but I have a long way to go and a few complications from a fall, not the hip but other stuff, hurt my hand so it hurts to use the cane I got which was helping the inflammation in the hip after only 2 weeks of using it, LOL. Never a dull moment here.

Hi Feribrat, we're thrilled to hear that the glute exercises are making some headway for you! We are very sorry to hear that you've been suffering from complications from a fall that has injured your hand. Dealing with both hip arthritis and a hand injury when you are trying to offload the hip can be very frustrating. In case you are interested there are walkers where you use your forearms and not your hands. Does this apply to supplements as well. Supps such as turmeric, etc.?
@epmanualphysicaltherapy

Hi Kathy! This is a great question! Supplements are a great option for helping heal hip arthritis. Supplements do not solve the root problem, which is a muscle imbalance, but they do help create a healing environment! Just remember that it will take a few months of taking them to notice a difference. :) Here's a playlist that contains more information on supplements and another playlist for hip arthritis help: “Vitamins & Supplements For Joint Health” ru-vid.com/group/PLJVIPiFvv1mYQFXG0TxdLTJm0yunOpXEJ “Hip Arthritis Help” ru-vid.com/group/PLJVIPiFvv1mbICbP6qlXUZwMyAJlKD1dt

Let's be honest. There aren't SIDE effects. They are additional EFFECTS besides what we may be taking them for. The drug doesn't know what it's doing in your body. It just does several things at the same time, one of which MAY be easing pain.
