One of the benefits of campervan ownership is the ability to get out and explore. One of the challenges is keeping those trips and adventures on a budget! After 5 years of travelling in our van, over 600 nights away and over 100000 miles, we have developed a few ways to keep the budget on track. Join us as we take you through our top 11 ways to save money when away in your campervan in Europe.
We are Richard and Jackie and we live in the UK. We retired from teaching at the age of 51 just over a year ago. Our plans for early requirement include relocating to the Yorkshire Dales, developing our forever home and travelling the UK, Europe and eventually the world in our VW campervan Nelson.

So glad I found your channel. I quit my corporate job 18 months ago after a serious illness. I’ve been living in a caravan by the Northumberland coast and now I’ve recovered the next adventure is to get a campervan to travel on a limited budget. Buying our camper was hands down the best investment we have ever made after our house! It gives us our freedom and most short trips cost us just a little petrol money as we will find park ups as much as possible and just raid the fridge for what we have in our meal plan for the week anyway! ‘Cut your shirt to suit your cloth.’ was my Grandmother’s mantra. I never got really got it until recently, you guys are the embodiment of that saying. Thanks for showing what can be done! Can you tell me why VW camper vans are so hideously expensive? 😅

We definitely decided we would rather be time rich and have to keep to a budget! They really are expensive now aren’t they. We have had the van for 6 years so got in before covid and the post pandemic inflation! We are hoping the prices will come down soon as we want to upgrade to a bigger van in 2 years when we get our pension!

Worth mentioning that there are no tolls on German roads / motorways so you can head south through Germany to save money and then go into southern France that way - or just stay in Germany!

Very true - we have driven back through Germany and did a lovely drive following the Rhine. Germany was a revelation to us that we want to return to and explore 🚐

Really been enjoying your channel!. I'm an American living in Portugal and like yourselves I retired around the same age as both of you. My question is about your local UK trips, it seems that you travel most weeks so my question is when traveling in the UK if you go for 2 days or 5 days how many miles do you venture from home? For me I feel the further from home I go the more time I must stay. So for me if I drive 1-3 hours away from home I then stay 1 to 2 nights. If I drive 4 - 6 hours then I typically stay in that area for about 5 nights.

Living in the dales we are only an hour from the Lake District so can pop there regularly for a night or 2. We tend to not go further than 2 hrs if we only have 2 nights so when we go to Scotland we will stay for a week or so and save Europe for when we have big blocks of time. We are only 2 hrs to the Scottish border which helps. We are loving the freedom to travel that early retirement has given us and are trying really hard to not drive too far when we get to an area so we can really explore it well. We thought 10 days on Arran which is only 40 miles long and 20 wide would be too much but in reality we could have stayed another week!
