Erica Hill sits down with 11-year-old college graduate, Moshe Kai Cavalin. Last Friday, the pint-sized Los Angeles native graduated with a 4.0 GPA from College, earning an Associates Degree.
Depends on the kid. Its important to understand that there are people - little kids - who are bored to tears, in incredible pain because they're asked to do the equivalent of putting an adult in a room to study the alphabet 7 hours a day for 5 months straight. I envy any kid whose parents/life has let them pursue their sense of passion, creativity, fun, etc. to an incredible height/speed, but if Moshe was pushed or limited in any way, it doesn't matter.
See, this is when people start to take advantage of kids like this by inviting them on tons of shows, asking them to take tests, all kinds of stuff like that. I'm in Gateway (A higher learning program for gifted and talented kids) And I'm asked to take lots of tests meant for people 5 or 6 years older than me, and I'm already annoyed with it. Imagine what THIS kid is going through.
He is a 3-year martial arts champion, he has completed 3 years of college where people "wow'd" over him, he tutors people, he has been on television, and he has the wisdom already to be a self-driven achiever in many things. I know fully grown adults who went all the way through school and their lives at the same pace as everyone else who sit around with NO ONE that gives a shit about them, with a complete lack of a social life. I think this kid has more of a social life than most.
I have to admit that when it comes down to education at a high school level the US has a mediocre system, but when it comes to the university level things do change. When students graduate high school they are not ready to keep up with the work universities require, that's why a 4-year career often takes people 5-7 years to complete (sometimes longer). There are excellent universities out there, not just Harvard.
Just cuz he's smarter than u doesn't mean u have to be rude to him, he's human every ones different accept him for that maybe u guys need to just get a life and leave him alone
I find it laughable how jealous most of the people posting comments are of this child's wonderful abilities. Its so silly how you try to dismiss his abilities to make yourself feel better. Stop kidding yourself, this child is exemplary and should be a model for everyone.
trust me... im asian, and let me tell you... asian parents are rough on their kids, they want me to be a doctor or a pharmacist. It is hard since you are the first family generation here.
I don't get it. Now he is a college grad; yet he said he wants to get accepted at one of the top universities!! does that mean he has something equivalent to a diploma, or is it a legitimate college degree?
@a1exgerman Yes, but near the end he was talking about how he wants to pursue other things. He's not done, he's just waiting for a scholarship into harder schools. He's just a boy who's accomplished something a lot of people haven't for his age. Kudos to him. You on other hand are just plain rude.
Hello... were you not listening?? He just said he took a level 2 placement test and the mathematics section was calculus based. Now what average kid could do calculus?
He's a kid, people!! Just because he's smart, doesn't mean he's going to be grown-up about it. Man, if I was 11 and a college graduate, I'd be pretty proud. Every kid shows off with what they're good at. Wow, that sentence was a grammatical disaster. Good job I'm in college!! :D
I'm confused. 2016 Olympics? The Olympics is every four years, right? The Olympics were this year... Is there a... I mean, I don't know what I'm asking. Was he referring to a qualifying game that takes place in 2016?
I agree 100%. He sounds like an average child. If you push any child hard enough, they can get a simple degree in liberal arts. What would be more impressive would be if he got a degree in a hard subject, like mathematics.
Oh wow, he's very mature =) He also makes me wanna think about what I've been doing with my life =P I wonder if he ever feels like he never had a childhood =\ but then again, he seems like he's happy and satisfied which is very important =)
@tanminh haha i'm not jealous, the kid is a bright individual and he's going to be very successful in life because of the hard work he put in. i just feel there's no need to be egotistical, regardless of your success. there are many successful people who are as modest as can be. i don't hate the guy at all, its just not a good trait to be so prevalent at 11 years old
@FudgeButters Actually there are millions of kids on the planet that could do exactly what he has done if they had the tenacity to do so....... Unfortunately I don't know many kids who want to study algebra and calculus all day :P. That doesn't change the fact that this kid has character, determination, and smarts. Which is something that the most of the world can't say.
My votec wont accept because im to old yet an 8 year old got into college... i couldve skipped a grade but my dad said no and i wanted to go to college when i was little way more than i do now...
@Ezman1995 of course he's a prodigy. parents can push all they want but if you don't have the potential to be smart, no matter how hard they push you, you would never achieve this kid's level.
@ThangHuynh10 Well he's obviously not going to attend all the schools that are going to give him a scholarship. He'll choose one, DUH. As for "him just wanting to attend a school because of money and not what a school can offer him" that's wrong. Why do you think people go to community colleges? Cause it's more affordable. I bet he wouldn't be able to go to a $50,000 a year college without help in the form of scholarship money.
