In this video I picked open a Folger Adam prison or jail cell lock and gutted it so we could look at the super-oversized pins and ball bearings.

How strange as I very literally, quite by coincidence, just had a Folger Adam Mongol Mortise cylinder on my bench which is giving me difficulty to pick. I thought this would be a "piece of cake" since is't so huge and it looked like the keyway would be wide open. I have the key and it's has very simple stairstep bitting with low key cuts at the tip progressing to high key cuts at the bow. Easy Right? Well after I had no luck I pulled the tailpiece and saw that it is a master ring cylinder! So I cheated and went on-line to see if anyone had fooled with one of these to perhaps see what "pesky" pins are inside -- low and behold bosnianbill had just picked one! On mine, it seems when I tension it, the master ring also rotates slightly, causing the key pins to jam and not want to lift any higher! I'm using the Praxis "Dangerfield" kit with 0.015 thick picks and experience the same dragging on the warding that bosnianbill did. Now with a bit more knowledge of what's inside -- "wish me luck", well grant me better skill!

I work in a county jail and there's one of these on my office door, everything is done remotely via electric releases for day to day operations but I was always at awe at the SHEER SIZE of the things. The keys are gigantic and would be tough to hide on your person if you stole them, guess that's a side benefit of the dual sheer line design.

Someone should take a lock like this and include a second ring so a standard core can be used and give Bill three sheer lines to pick to instead of just two. :D

Just want to thank you Mr Bill. I have been watching your videos for about a year now and have become rather decent at picking locks thanks to your lessons. It has actually helped me and people around me. Obviously i use it for only legal purposes. Locked out of my house, no problem. Neighbors locked out? No problem. Ive even helped my boss when he forgot his keys at home.

I have an old Midwestern or Midstates Penal Lock Co, lock. Odds are the newer Folger Adams/Southern Steel locks have a grandmaster key, at least one sub-master key and a change key. Best & Schlage Everest/Primus are good for crazy key control, and numerous tiers of sub-master keying.

I have more experience operating FOLGER-ADAMS locks over my past career managing State prisons than I wish I had. While your picking this lock is impressive this kind of lock would only be used to control sub-segments of a prison (school class rooms, offices, interior gates in an area, etc.) and a BIT KEY LOCK would be used to control all large sections of a prison and highly secure areas like control rooms or the arsenal or gates for entire wings like those leading to housing areas or hub areas. I once asked you private if you could pick a BIT KEY LOCK and I am happy to say you did not think you could. That is why they are used in such environments. You have to ask why there are master keys for this in addition to the normal keys to open this lock. It is not uncommon for a Superintendent or Warden or executive staff to have a limited number of master key sets to tour a prison with carrying a large number of keys and for times of crisis to travel through a prison quickly with teams of security staff to surprise and take back an area of the prison inmates had overtaken and a second way to unlock a defective lock. Nice job picking this one.
@tommyleopard3537
@tommyleopard3537 6 лет назад
Maybe in a jail a bit key lock but that would be bypassed with something like music wire and pliers. Seen LOTS of folger-adams for temp holding or bean holes. However for doors and the like medeco, assa and schlage are the most popular around here. Of course it depends on when the place was built as the cost to refit a entire institution would be wicked high.

Could you stack two tension wrenches side by side to make a thicker one? You could mix and match the thick and thin ones to create a size that fits best.

@jermainerace4156
@jermainerace4156 4 года назад
@@yozenfrogurt09 I do sometimes use Allen keys, they are quite good, especially rigid and strong. I grind the sides down to make a nice flat. You can make custom tension wrenches this way to deal with unique keyways and especially locks that seem like a lot more tension than a normal wrench can apply.,

I don’t pick locks but love your channel if you ever have a problem with your tensioner not being thick enough just try tapping two together 😎 until you find the correct thickness. I’m not too sure if it will work but it’s worth a try.

When dealing with super sized locks Allen Keys that have the shot side trimmed and ground make excellent cheat tension wrenches. As for that lock being dirty inside maybe for lock-sport locks but for working locks especially outdoor locks not so much because most of those locks and I am sure a institution lock was never taken apart and cleaned but instead was serviced once a year if that with a can of WD40
@duffmanoooyea

lolz. i know that lock has seen service. inmate paint details always paint over the lock. in older facilities the in house locksmith spends half his day unjamming painted over locks. some can be scraped down to a really old layer of lead paint.

Haha same but different. I used to work in a Diesel engine rebuild shop, occasionally we would come across a tamperproof fastener that resembled a 6 sided torx, but only had 5 points so it looked like a star. It was used on Deutz engines and some diesel fuel injection stuff too. We hadda sign that thing out cause I guess it's used in prisons, the shop needed to keep an eye on that.

Hi Bill! Great video. Listen, I've got limited access to tools, and I was wondering what the best way you thought would be to open these with improvised instruments. I tried some plastic like you'd use for bumping Medeco, but that didn't do the job like it would the old Patriots... Thanks!!! Love the channel!
@Jimbobway1
@Jimbobway1 5 лет назад
It would be tougher if that was still in use trying to pick it. You would probably bend you tensioner because even with the key you have to use a bit of pressure to open those. They’re meant for a swing door and when you turn the key you move the lock out of the door and have to overcome the spring tension that pushes it into the door to keep it secure

bill, ya goofball, if you pick to the top sheer line on the master ring, then the plug won't come out. the ring doesn't come out the front, the plug can't be pushed back, and the plug and the ring will be locked together with the remaining key pins. I've pinned, picked, assembled, and disassembled master ring corbin russwins and boy howdy do you have to get it just right. you have to pick to the bottom sheer line only if you intend to disassemble it. big ol' pain in the neck.

Hello Bill, have a wild guess, and I am only a subscriber, I never picked a lock, but I watch all your videos. Do you think this lock would give different feedback than regular ones? Do you think that by picking it many times you will be able to tell what shear line are you picking at?! you opened the thing, and that is a success, but I was wondering if it is worth playing with it more? I believe it would be such a nice lock for feedback training. am I wrong? did you notice something different?

I think the length of the #5 key pin would let it line up with either shear line depending on the key bitting. A really low bitting would allow it to line up with the core shear line, and a high bitting would push it up to line up with the master shear line.

Some Idiot The simple master pinning where the lower ranked keys are shorter in only one position seem equally secure to me, but limits the number of lower keys for each master. Especially if you don't want inmates to figure out the master by comparing lowers that differ in different pins.

I'm kinda surprised there weren't any more security pins in there... I mean come on... at LEAST have some serrated pins... maybe some serrated spools or T pins. These are seasoned criminals you're dealing with.

I suspect the master keying is for the food personell. So the normal guards have the real master key to all cells, while the food serving personell only have the "operating key" that fits the current cell block - so if the personell is beaten down and key stolen - it will be pretty useless.

Sidebar: For any one who is confused about measurements (I know I was at first lol), there's a 1,000 thousandths in an inch. So that 50 thousandths tension wrench he is using is 0.05 of an inch in thickness (or also known as five hundredths of an inch).

...In case of a multiple pin (user / master) with two shear lines, would it be better to gut it by the top of the bible ??? .This way, it would be impossible to mix-up the pins,

Probably easiest to gut it by removing the spring retainer cap. But having worked on these, sometimes the pins don't want to come out, the metal at the top of the chambers can get slightly compressed or out-of-round after years of use. I always start by trying to remove the center cylinder using key & follower. If for some reason that fails, I'll pull the cap. Of course you'll need a replacement cap if you want it to be in working condition when you're done.

bosnianbill do you have more videos on high security prison locks? I just got a locksmith position at a prison and I haven't dealt with these types of locks before... I'd love to get some of your knowledge!
