Anybody going to live and work in Denmark gets the same level of support to learn Danish. They get paid for 3days by their company and 2 days by the Government while they learn the language. My former neighbour's son is living there and doing graphic design and planning.Mary had the advantage of having a Danish speaking husband!

There is more protocol with the British Royals, but you can see the Queen, Philip, Charles, Camilla, William and Kate all are comfortable relating to others and treat others with consideration. The persons at the various events they interact with appear to be quite happy with them. I must admit, Mary is always so beautifully and stylishly dressed, and is always perfectly elegant.

I find monarchies one of the most outdated thing in democracies. The fact that someone is born into this abundance of privilege and power is absurd. On the other hand, I have to admit that the danish royal family is extremely good in understanding this privilege. Although a few scandals have emerged in the past years, the family is a true example of how a royal family should behave in our modern times. Congratulations to them.
The thing about a monarchy is that it safeguards democracy. It means that there is someone at the head of the government who isn't a partial politician, but someone who looks to the long term well-being of the country rather than the time until the next election. They are the only person who can step in if an elected government becomes undemocratic. The military swears allegiance to the monarchy not the government, and they take that seriously. Look at Spain. They restored their monarchy, and when the military tried to stage a coup the King went on national television and reminded them of their duty. The coup ended. Monarchy is old fashioned, but why not? They are our national history in one person, a non political focus for national events. To know where we are going we have to know where we have been.

People change countries and go after what interests them. Nationalism is an old concept that only exists in sick democracies, such as the american. To top it off, monarchies do not safeguard a country. A King's view of what he thinks is good for a nation can be VERY different from the reality. Just look at the mess Christian X created in Denmark in the 20th century when he dissolved the government because he thought it was becoming too progressive and going "against the nation's interests". Monarchy is just another name for a fancy dictatorship.

I just stumbled upon this amazing couple after the death of the father Henrik was posted in the news in Feb. I am African American and found out through DNA that I have 25% Scandinavian roots. The couple is amazing you can get so much joy from just watching them. Their happiness is infectious.
