12 Days of Xmas #11: Iraq For Sale 

I had colleagues who were hired to work In Iraq by these contractors. It was a “gold rush” mentality by those companies. They didn’t care about their employees, the soldiers or the Iraqis. I was offered a position to work there for 5X my normal salary and it was tax free. After talking with a close friend who was already working there, I chose to pass on the opportunity.

It's kind of ironic: the US and UN pretfy much outlawed Private Mercenary Companies in the late 90s, yet here we are with them still in existence. A bit of an intetesting thing, bit during the mid-1960s, there was sort-of this war ongoing in what we now call Zimbabwe, known as the Rhodesian Bush War. The native population was essentially fighting against the white minority, who at that time governed/controlled the country (colonialism moment) The white minority contracted a ton of mercenaries, namely from Australia, the US, Britain, etc. A large majority of those mercs essentially believed they were fighting some sort of "noble" war, meaning it essentially was a race war to them. The US didn't outright back the white minority, but they did try to get a lot of folks to join up, namely by advertising it in a magazine called Soldier of Fortune. PMCs/PFCs are, for the most part, the same as they always were. Things are just no longer being glorified to the masses. It's depressing to think we live in a world where just about any right-wing nutjob who had even a tiny amount of combat service in the military can essentially become a death squad who has no repercussions for any sort of attrocity.

People want open market economics , low taxes , small government, and unfettered capitalism....this is that....why isn't everyone happy? 🤷‍♂ On that note - when do we get a public holiday for Brexit day and why is no--one celebrating?🤔

War is Hell. But if you play your cards right war can be profitable too!

Those were dark times. I naively thought no one in their right mind would ever again trust a republican after that debacle. You ever see the documentary about the people who live in subway tunnels? I feel like it came out around that time as well.

Someone should make a documentary about Sept11th’s Building #7. Interview individual engineers and other professionals. Truly maddening the implications are.
