It's pretty wild to me that one of my favourite youtuber's did a take down of Shad of all people. I despise him for my own reasons and I'm biased I admit, but long story short a few years ago he did some archery stuff and was clearly lieing about what he was doing. I'm an archer and it was wild to see this guy blatantly pick up the sport and make bullsh- claims, exaggerate his ability, and make ahistorical claims. Pulling too high weights immediately after a surgery etc. But what was irritating was him advertising some questionable techniques that could result in injury. I commented on his channel in as respectful a way I could. Let's call it constructive criticism. My comments were censored and removed. Lo and behold people tried to emmulate his 'techniques' and started injuring themselves. That's when I knew he was a complete moron.

I used to love Shadiversity, because he seemed like a small town nerd, talking about nerd things from his medieval man cave, not because he seemed like a drama queen with 8 acres to build a castle on, with 10 videos disagreeing with 20 different medievalist channels, about why everyone else is wrong but me. Oh, also, watch my associates frolic in the sun together while I do nothing.

I watched Shad’s weapon videos occasionally back in the day. They were alright and sometimes I’d learn something neat. Every time I see or hear about him nowadays it seems he’s living down to basically every stereotype of a pudgy nerd who spends his free time larping with swords in his backyard.

I totally missed all those great videos youve put out in the past. "Orc Lives Matter" "Girls wearing pants?". I need to catch up on the back catalog.

Ohhhhh boy. I really wanna tell my story with that guy and the wider “hist-tube” community. I began this obsession as the average autistic middle school boy who bragged about being able to name all WWII tanks and planes. And to my enjoyment, channels like Shadiversity, Metatron, Scholagladiatoria, Lindybeige, and Skallagrim were there for me. That’s when I decided to actually do something of my obsession, and actually decided to pursue an academic degree, and do a history major, oh how foolish I was. The more I began actually reading, actually being critical about sources, actually delving into the deeper and much more nuanced discussions about history in general, the more I realised how dumb most of these channel’s approach to history was. And to my surprise, it seems a lot of people agreed. Right around this time, the discussions of history on RU-vid became much deeper, much more insightful and nuanced. And newcomers caused a switch. I think one of the first was Atun Shei and Checkmate Lincolnites. Then came a whole bunch of others. Suddenly, Drachinifel was actually teaching war history nerds about the difference between history and historiography. Suddenly, video essays about the annals movement came out. Hour long videos discussing much deeper subjects, social history, the creation of nationalised armies, economic history, and even politics. Suddenly, the once beloved and praised German WWII military became the butt of the joke. Things like soft factors, industry and steel production became the focus of the discussio rather than calibers and armor thickness. Potential History made a series about why the Axis, in fact, sucked. New youtubers like Falcon’s Fightertales and Animarchy began actually discussing the nuances of conflict and analyzing sources critically. And right around this time many of the old guard tried to adapt. Some succeeded, some failed. Brandon F. Stopped talking about muskets and uniforms to start talking about logistics, large scale strategies, and subjects like human suffering and deprivation during war, funny enough probably caused due to collaboration with Atun Shei. Sarcasmitron became popular analyzing the origins of the war in Ukraine. LazerPig came out as yet another nail in the coffin of German WWII engineering and Wehraboo myths. What Why How and Fredda put into question the mere concept of AltHist, so popular amongst the old guard. And the old guard also tried to make the switch. And most failed. Lindybeige lost credibility as his niche of comparing guns and swords was depleting, started trying to do deep dives and address more complex topics but used very poor sources and methodology which his better read fans could not fail to notice. Matt Easton did become much better at his job by analyzing the cultural aspects surrounding swords and weapons and in conjunction with the more nuanced approach to why and how they evolved. Metatron tried to do the same as Lindy, and also failed due to poor source analysis and methodology, just like Lindy. But finally came Shad. Shadiversity outright refused to try and evolve his content, and instead, in an ever diminishing niche, he simply went full on culture war. Funny enough Metatron is doing the same. Now Shad has even been cut off by many, including the old guard like Matt Easton. This has left him increasingly more isolated and disliked amongst the hist-tube community. History is an ever evolving subject, and it seems we saw in real time how it changed. People began to demand more complex topics, much more nuanced takes, and the classic “which gun is better” or “which is the best sword” style of video no longer garners enough views. A combination of oversaturation and demand for new takes made their early content obsolete. And it seems Shad and Metatron failed making that transition, instead going full on culture war grifter to try to stay relevant, with mixed results to say the least. I doubt this will stop their growth, they will simply move on to making “culture war” takes and videos and probably garnish them with history, but little more than that. Edit for those asking: Skall probably didn’t change that much because he found a particular corner within the niche of sword geekery by discussing practice and HEMA rather than history per se, focusing more on swords as sport rather than making weird history takes. So he was able to avoid a lot of the weird actors around this whole genre. Which is funny considering he’s a Canadian progressive liberal.

The RU-vid cycle is a very real thing. No one is immune to this - even the once bulletproof Pewdiepie has gone from 1st to 10th in Subscriber count. People just eventually get bored with you. You can either accept this, try to evolve, or moan about some omnipresent ''them'' that is trying to keep you down. Bonus points if you throw in ''the RU-vid Algorithm'' at some point even though you don't really have any clue what it is.

I stopped watching Shad when he thanked god for the ability to buy the land to build a castle. While ignoring the fact that the audience is the reason he had the opportunity.

Witnessing the death throes of a real artist, has been incredibly sad to see. Shad puts the art into artificial, but putting in intelligence, remains to be seen. Anyhoo, RU-vid's loss will undoubtedly be Rumble/Locals gain.

Random story, completely unrelated: I used to have a plumber named Bob, and he was a pretty great plumber. He fixed my pipes real good, and he was pretty fun to talk to. Things were going great, but then one day, I drove by him on my way back from work, and he was standing on the side of the road wearing Klan robes, screaming at the top of his lungs about The Little Mermaid or something like that, and then he started pouring septic fluids all over his head. It was a little off-putting, and then, when he would come over to my house to do some work, he would complain about his operating expenses because "you-know-who" was raising the prices of socket wrenches and PVC pipes. It got to be a little too much, so eventually I stopped calling him and got another plumber. I got an angry phone call from him a few weeks later, and from a couple of other people who I think pay him money to scream and pour shit on his head, asking why I was ghosting him, and if it was because of the activities he partook in in his personal time. He argued that he didn't do these things when he was at my house fixing my pipes, and wanted to know why I didn't want him in my house anymore. I called him back and told him that that was fair and all, but I just couldn't shake the concern he might not've washed the septic fluid off his hands before coming over for a job, or that he might haul over a ten-foot-tall wooden cross in his truck one day and ask me to leave it in my yard for a couple of days.

When I watched this the first time I assumed it was a heightened but generalized spoof of a certain genre of RU-vid video that has been put out by lots of different youtubers over recent years. i think his decline started even earlier. i remember him talking about some health issues back in the day when he was just a nice guy who enjoyed talking about castles, and that he eventually needed surgery. if i remember correctly, he lost weight after that and started doing better physically when i noticed that his personality seemed to change. at first i thought he just became more self confident, but it quickly appeared to be arrogant and presumptuous. and then there was this strange feud about bat'leth he just took a little too serious. and it went all downhill from there

As a history guy from a country full of castles i never liked his stuff. It was all very surface level stuff presented in a annoying way. I guess it sort of made me realise how an ordinary japaneese person probably expercinces hard corce weeaboos.
