This is a favourite among the Sembene films I’ve seen. The Homer Simpson comparison made me chuckle. Emitaï is another great work as well.

Today I feel like Hip Tang tastes like metal with a hint of sugar and sweat.

I love this film. Xala is even better, in my opinion. Far more bitter and cynical, but in a universally understood fashion. Ibrahima is ultimately a very loveable character, in spite of his inequities, because of Sembene's humanity, and that same humanity is displayed in Xala towards its protagonist and yet it's absolutely excoriating and hilarious (and probably hits much closer to home for guys, what with its device of magic-induced impotence). Camp de Thiaroye is probably the best film ever made about Western colonialism made by the colonized; reminiscent at times of Grand Illusion in its depths of humanity but ultimately is driven with genuine anger towards (continuing) injustice; an anger driven by both personal experiences and knowledge of broader atrocities.

This film is so good, I love it. Probably one of his best works.

Just saw a 35mm print of this at our local Cinematheque a couple months ago. I loved it!

I went out with me mum, dad and brother for dinner and a drinks tonight. Got a a bit drunk, won't lie. Anyway, I'll stick this on the watch list.
