In today's video, we will be going over 2 reasons that you need a 12 gauge as well as 3 drawbacks of the cartridge. We will also be firing an assortment of 12 gauge ammo at common self defense ranges to see how much the loads actually spread.
*These tests are meant for entertainment and educational purposes only. Shooting steel can be dangerous, so do not try any of these tests at home! Always ensure that your shotgun is rated for 3 inch or 3.5 inch 12 gauge ammunition if you intend to use these longer offerings.
At this time, I do not have any coupon codes for MidwayUSA.

In Europe, the 12 gauge is the typical farmer's gun. Often a single barrel. Everything else is seen as an expensive optional extra for show offs. There were some unbelievably good shots with them. One shot one kill and spend any extra money on a good dog.

1. The reason shotgun ammo went up in price so bad is how much lead it uses. The obama era EPA closed the last primary lead smelter in the US 10 years ago. There are a bunch of secondary smelters that recycle it but those have been closing down too. So now nearly all lead is imported to the US, and lead is HEAVY, thus more expensive after shipping. This is also part of why bullets in general went up, but in particular why car batteries went up so bad, the COVID shipping cost spike was passed into it. The US based lead smelters were/are extremely dirty polluters, but still, with no modernized cleaner equivalent in the US, the price went up. 2. You appear to have ignored chokes as your shotguns dont have them. Chokes turn alot of spready shot into something more useful at range. As a video idea, the silliest choke is the "metro barrel extension" which is a custom made extra long ported barrel extension choke that is so silly long it is basically a non nfa suppresor, turning a shotguns sound level into 22lr. 3. The absolute most "versatility" you can get out of a shotgun is what cuban guerillas used them for in the communist takeover of cuba. The put extra long bipods on 16 gauges to use them as a mini mortars. A shotgun shell with the shot taken out (basically a blank) was loaded, and a wooden rod loaded into the bore down to the shell from the front, the rod had a cup in it to carry Molotovs or other payloads. Supposedly they were reasonably accurate to 100 meters.

I was not aware of him shutting down the lead facility, but that makes a lot of sense with the prices going up. I’lol have to check out that choke. I have had an extended one made by truglo in the past, but it shifted my pattern so much that I haven’t looked at them since. I don’t think I’ll try the load you mentioned, but definitely intriguing

I don't think much of chamber adapters. They're really hard to use in anything but a break open action, such as a single shot, or a double barrel. Also, you have to find out where the thing is going to shoot, and if you remove the adapter, it'll have a new point of aim when you put it back in. They're really more of a gimmick, not really something particularly useful or effective.

If I had to choose one between a AR15 and a 12 gauge and that's all I will ever get, I would pick the 12 gauge all day long. It's versatility is unmatched and while you said buck shots are good for 60 yards and slugs for 100 yards, that is far from their lethal limits. If you learn the drop rate and the aim point for slugs, they are lethal beyond 300 yards with the right ammo on medium game.

In the 90s, I took my hunter’s safety course in PA. One of the questions was- multiple choice- do you aim or point a shotgun? I knew they wanted me to put ‘point’ but I also knew that to be not true. I put aim, well knowing I would get a few points off my score. There was one other like that, something to do with bow hunting. I scored 48/50. Noteworthy- slugs were legal but buckshot was not, furthering my case.

It might be neat if a company came out with a pump shotgun that was designed to shoot the shorty shells, I realize it takes away some of the versatility but the increased capacity would be nice. You would still have right at an ounce of payload traveling around 1,200 fps maybe a bit more on some hotter rounds. Just a thought.

Something odd about buckshot. Sometimes, a shotgun's choke can make buckshot spread more than with an unchoked shotgun. I've seen tests with a lot of variance. In one test, the buckshot spread got wider as the choke went up, until it reached full choke, at which point, it was at its tightest.
@stephenparchewski1998
@stephenparchewski1998 Год назад
That’s actually the theory behind shotgun chokes such as the Patternmaster code black duck/goose. They are wad stripping but have no compression. They are able to throw tight patterns.
@bananaballistics
@bananaballistics Год назад
That is strange. I wonder if chokes mess with the shape of the pellets which could change their trajectory
@stephenparchewski1998
@stephenparchewski1998 Год назад
I think that is the reason for it. I’ve used a full choke for years and, when I switched to a Patternmaster, my patterns stayed about the same size. With the Patternmaster, the choke grips the back of the shot cup, so the pellets fly ahead of the shot cup out the barrel. I’m guessing the tight pattern is because the pellets don’t get deformed and the wad doesn’t interfere with pellet flight. Seems to work well for me.
@toddk1377

All the reason why it's important to pattern your shotgun and the preferred load you intend to use. With an 870 just using regular remchokes, I've seen some weird anomalies happen with various shots/brands of ammunition. I was using some Winchester high velocity field loads for small game, kept missing squirrels about 30 yards away. Shot at a piece of cardboard about 25 yards and the shot spread over the entire piece of 3'x3' cardboard, with a modified choke! I used imp mod and got the same, full wasn't much better. Tried some Remington filed loads and the pattern was denser at the same range with modified choke, then switched to full and it was smaller and denser on that 3'x3' sheet. Been using that combo ever since and last year I stacked them squirrels up in my freezer. Even got a nice big fox squirrel out of a tree about 40-50 yards away on the first shot. Only problem I had were the squirrels that were close like 10-15 yards away, shot a little red squirrel and practically blew it apart....oops🤷.

I have a question. Regarding sabot slugs, do they require a fully rifled barrel, or can they be used with a rifled choke to stabilize them?
@redfaux74
@redfaux74 Год назад
They need a fully rifled barrel to be effective. They are smaller in diameter. He covered that in the video.
@stephenparchewski1998
@stephenparchewski1998 Год назад
Red Faux, I did get that. But they do make chokes that are rifled that you can throw in a smooth bore shotgun for slugs. So, when the sabot/slug reach the end of the barrel, they start twisting to stabilize the projectile. I’m just wondering if anyone has experience with this and if those chokes can rotate the sabot enough to stabilize it.
@redfaux74
@redfaux74 Год назад
@@stephenparchewski1998 - I won't guess. God luck with that one. I would assume not tho. I would think more than half an inch would be required to get it going.
@joearledge1
@joearledge1 Год назад
@@stephenparchewski1998 your best bet is to get some of whatever you're looking at an test them. Just like in rifles, not every load shoots the same out of every gun/barrel. Even perfectly identical ones will do different things with the exact same load. Whether or not it stabilizes and gives acceptable groups involves a lot of variables. The choice of hull, primer, powder, wad, projectile and sabot design. If the sabot just rotates around the outside of the projectile without grabbing it, then spin won't help. If it's not a clean release from the sabot, then it won't be precise. Assuming it functions as designed, spin stability is dependent upon RPM. RPM of a projectile is dependent upon twist rate and velocity. You can see this with people shooting heavy for cartridge bullets, lower velocities it'll be unstable, higher velocities in the same gun/barrel will start to stabilize it. There is no "standard" for twist of any caliber, but especially scatter gats. So if you want to know the twist of your choke or barrel, you can try asking the manufacturer, but you're better off just measuring it(shocker manufacturers lie nearly as much as politicians). I want to say that most twist rates in scatter gats are in the ballpark of 1 in 35 but you'll have to check your own. Additionally even if a barrel and rifled choke have the exact same twist rate(chokes are often slower twist though) the projectile will have less RPM out of the choke, than the same twist rifled barrel. Which many be good or bad. Hell, the sabots may shoot best out of a smooth bore, or may shoot crappy out of everything(wouldn't be the first gimmick from ammo companies), or great out of everything. This all also depends on your definition of precision. 6" group at 100yrds vs 1" group, ect... Honestly, you're better off hand loading, but if you're stuck with factory ammo, you can work with that, it's just more than double the price. For example, my Turkey loads are less than $0.75 each and outperform winchester long beard XR that cost around $2.50 each. At the end of the day, testing it in your setup is the ONLY way to know...
@toddk1377
@toddk1377 11 месяцев назад
Never used the rifled choke for sabot slugs. I would think due to such short rifling, it won't help much, not like having a rifled barrel. If your shots are 150 yards or less, just use normal rifled/foster slugs. For what 12 gauge sabot slugs cost and the limited usability of a rifled shotgun barrel, I would rather just use a muzzleloader at that point, much more accurate and cheaper to shoot. I guess I just refuse to own a rifled shotgun 🤷.

Looks like this 12 gauge shotgun is too big to me, I think 4 gauge is more suitable for me since they are have smaller number which mean smaller diameter

Good point. I'm surprised they aren't more popular. I figure it makes sense to start my 14yr old with something like 4 gauge, then work her way up to the 12 guage. The smaller guns are surprisingly expensive though...

Rekire…a 4 gauge is HUGE compared to a 12 gauge. The smaller the number, the bigger the bore size.

I checked…a 4 gauge shotshell is 1/4” wider than a 12 gauge shotshell. I think they shoot a 3 ounce payload or something like that. Good luck trying to find a 4 gauge…

Bro you dont think bird shot for self defense would work? Unless you live in a mansion lmfao average is like 6 to 7 feet inside a home even number 8 shot would put a hole in a human at that distance

20 gauge is more versatile than 12 gauge you can't shoot squirrels, rabbit, and other small game with a 12 gauge and still have edible meat left over

You do realize you’re never supposed to shoot a shotgun with no chokes in it ? You’ve potentially destroyed the threading at the muzzle. Additionally, the fact that you’re comparing a shotguns capacity to an AR-15 is absolutely ridiculous - that’s like comparing birds to rocks. I recommend you stick to reviewing rifles and steer clear of shotguns, because it is painfully obvious that you don’t jack about shotguns or how to review them.
