Hi Ethan! I'm a senior writing an essay right now for a prompt that asks for a story or experience that demonstrates my character. I'm writing about how when I first was a coxswain for Crew, I was completely and utterly scared all the time of making mistakes, how I spent time educating myself so much about the sport and stepping out of my comfort zone within it, and how at university I hope to continue stepping out of my comfort zone by engaging in research, study abroad trips, etc.. I'm trying to have my essay describe how I'm resourceful, always try my best, determined to learn something new. I know you said sport essays are really common and overused, do you think my essay falls into that category/should I go back to brainstorming?

That topic could work! A good question to ask yourself is: "Does this topic demonstrate the skills, qualities, values, and interests I offer the school as an incoming student?" If yes, then start outlining and writing your first drafts. If no, go back to brainstorming!
