as a childcare worker, many childcare centers would love donations of little yarn scraps for the children to use in arts and crafts.

art teachers in schools might also take it-- there was a bunch from my grandma's church's storage room that was cut into odd lengths too short to really do much with and an art teacher my mom knew was happy to take it

I inherited a HUGE bag of scraps. Brand new yarn cut into short lengths and in several different colours, for a crafting project. A lady I knew passed away and her family didn’t want the yarn and my yarny heart just couldn’t throw them away. So, I joined some of them using an overhand knot and ended up with a large ball full of knots (the lengths were too short to keep weaving them in). I paired this with a contrasting colour and crocheted a wrap, using a V stitch, with a border in the contrasting colour. It was really pretty and the ends that we’re showing just added to the character of the wrap. As I write this more lengths are being knotted together (I drafted in help). I will make more wraps that will go to a homeless charity this coming winter. Thank you for sharing your video.

The magic knot...I have been hearing about it and thought I should look into it. This is great. Outside of textiles it is called the fisherman's knot. It probably has several other names. In jewelry making it is used on cording to make adjustable necklaces. I should have realized knitters and crocheters would find it useful as well.

I've actually been saving all of my scrap yarns, because once I finish all the worsted weight WIP's that I started and never finished, I have a plan for them. My Grandmother was a crocheter, like me, but she was also a quilter. She made crazy quilts for all of her adult, married children out of scrap fabric from their lives. Once she got her adult children's quilts made, she started making quilts for her grandchildren. As I'm the oldest, I received the first of those, I got mine for Christmas just after I turned 16. Mine wasn't a crazy quilt, it was a Granny's Fan quilt based off of my favorite color, purple. Well, I intend to use all of my worsted weight yarn (or as much as I need to finish the project!) to make a crazy quilt Afghan blanket. I don't know how big I intend to make it, and it's going to have all different colors in it, from light to dark, colors that match and colors that don't. I plan to do this by assigning each color with a crochet stitch, or at least, that's one of my ideas... I haven't completely decided yet. But it will be made entirely of scrap yarn, with black as the border, both between each stash block and around the entire blanket.

If you have scraps of dk or fingering weight yarns, you can make mittens or socks, esp for those who knit as well like me! It's a great way to make a pair striped socks or mittens! When snipping off the ends of yarns while weaving them in, I collect them in a bag & save for stuffing plush! Summer Lee has great videos for those interested in knitting socks since she's a pretty well-known sock designer.

I throw absolutely NOTHING away when it comes to yarn pieces. Now, all yarn that I would have tossed in the garbage is instead put into a little ziploc bag. I save everything from fuzz to tiny snipped off ends. I buy size newborn baby socks, and when I get enough pieces to 'stuff' a baby sock, I fill it with the yarn pieces and add some dried catnip. You just stitch up the end. These were my cats favorite toys. Sadly, my cat passed almost a year ago, but I'm still saving my little bags of 'stuffing'. I know animal shelters can use these toys.

Both of my sons, who are now 20 to 30 plus, know Little House on the Prairie. Our families on both sides have continually watched it over the years. It's on MeTv and Roku, probably Amazon. I hope the generation coming up today gets exposure to it. It's such a timeless, classic show. I would have been excited to meet Melissa Gilbert too. I love scrapyarn projects. And people actually bring me bags of it 😂😂😂 You have chosen a lovely selection!!! ❤ My go-to is shawls but my favorite for the moment is 'granny squares with a circle in the middle', even small scraps will work 😊 The magic knot works fine, BUT do not cut the ends close, especially if it's acrylic. The yarn moves when washed and too often the knots open. Leave a small tail, so the knot doesn't open and slide as easily, when wet... and just weave it into the next stitches. 😊

I make crocheted catnip toys and they take so very little yarn. I use up my scraps this way. And I donate them to a local cat rescue group. Have been doing this for five years now. As a caveat with the magic knot, don't use it with slippery yarns like Caron Simply Soft. It comes undone very easily and you'll be sobbing when your knots come undone. I've had it come undone several times with that yarn. If you do, I'd recommend still leaving tails to weave in or using fabric glue.

I make "confetti blankets". It started with a bunch of yarn scraps jumbled together, and I set out to untangle them. At times, the tangles were just too tough to untangle, and I resorted to scissors. I took all these odd lengths of yarn, joined them together and made cuddle blankies for me great nieces. I started with a hexagon and just worked it up as a giant granny hexagon, with all the colura in there. The girls love them, and im working on one for their mum for Christmas. Her favourite colour is blue, so ive actually bought several skeins of blue yarn in different shades to keep that as the main colour. Other colours were chosen because they have an underlying blue tone. Ill have to find something else to work on for now, though, as it's got too warm for crocheting with a blanket in my lap. Hmm, maybe squares for a blanket for my sister?

Good Morning Elise, this is a fantastic video. I love all the projects but definitely a few stood out for me. Also, I have been using the yarn join method for several years and it’s the only one I do. The granny shawl was my very first shawl I made and actually still have it. I think it was about 5 years ago that I made this. Jayda’s blanket might be on the hook soon as well as that rug. I think I purchased Mable as well but have yet to make it. Butttt man o man do I love that kitty.. I may have to purchase that one. And of course those cherries and strawberries.. and I loved Melissa Gilbert as Laura Engles… a favorite show back in the 70’s, I had no idea she was making fabrics. I’ll have to check it out but I don’t sew. Anyway, excuse the novel, just so much fun packed in the 15 minute video. Have a wonderful day. Thank you

How exciting that you won the chicken and met Melissa Gilbert! Such great ideas here. When I reorganized I put together a big basket of variegated yarns and made a cool blanket using all of them plus four skeins of black. The random mixture and the black together were dramatic. But I told myself not to buy variegated again because I don't use it.

Hi from another North Carolinian. I love your channel and this episode was great since I am sitting on a fair amount of scraps or one-off skeins. I think the scrappy granny shawls are my favorite but the cat is wonderful too. So many good ones. If I ever run into you at a yarn event, I promise to be mindful of your body language. That story was a hoot! Thanks for another fun episode!

It's too hard to let you know a favorite. I had a couple of those number 1. is that beautiful linen stitch scrap rug. Oh my gosh, I need to make that I've been wanting to make a rug for quite some time. 2.The lemon peel discloth 3. The scrappy granny pillow I will definitely be making someday! 4. I love the seaside scrappy blanket too!

Ooooh! I have done 2strand and even 3 strand before…3strand is great for rugs since I seem to have twice as much white scrap balls, I have used a constant white strand with and any other color I pick up…the white makes a muted effect all the way through. BUT,.. I am very stoked about the bunting!! Looks so cute, just think, 4th July, beachy bunting, fall! Halloween, Christmas with sparkle yarn.. oooValrntineones’mmlavender and yellow for Easter…Marduk Gras….FUN FUN FUN😜🤗😃🤪🥰

The fever dream blanket is so cool. I used up chunky and dk yarn in a chevron blanket, the two strands held together, and it came out really cool. I had stripes of the chunky, but always held the dk (quite a thin one) with each colour and it brought it all together. It was navy and cream (with a slight colorful fleck) chunky stripes, held with a turquoise dk. I was really pleased with it.

I have been crocheting for about 8 years now, and I have built up a small collection of scraps. Some are big, and some are miniscule. These are wonderful ideas to use them. I think my two favorites are the scrap pillow and the scrap granny blanket. Those would be wonderful gifts. I also loved Little House on the Prairie and am so jealous that you got to meet Melissa Gilbert! Congrats on winning the signed chicken! I would love to see a video about the craft conference you went to. I have never heard of it and would like hear your impressions of it.

Love that chickens are having a moment right now. I have called my kids my little chickens since they were teeny tiny. Funny you have Mabel on your list because she’s been in my cart for a few weeks. Haven’t bit the bullet because I have zero chenille and would have to get a hook for it too. Not ready for that since I’ve only been crocheting for a few weeks now.

I love the chicken project! I might have to try it with some strands held together as well. My second favorite would have to be the rugs. I like how holding that many strands together can make some very random colors---you just don't know what color will pop out! Third favorite is probably the granny square blanket you showed at the beginning! Thanks for sharing--I'm definitely getting the chicken pattern as I have 6 chickens of my own and just adore them!

I love your chicken! I have been using scraps to make flowers for years. Since you're a fan of Attic24, i was inspired by her beautiful flower wreaths and so i just make many different types of flowers with my scraps and then when I have enough i use them to make a wreath. I have also used scraps to make larger bouquets of flowers for my desk. I think flowers are great way to use up scraps. I'm surprised you didn't mention baby clothes. Wee tiny booties and wee tiny hats are perfect for scraps. Things like baby sweaters and whatnot can use more than just scraps but little booties and hats don't take much yarn and i bet you could make some beautiful color combos for them by using that magic join method. I still rely mostly on flowers but you have inspired me to try the bunting.

My crochet buddy just made 7 of those fuzzy chickens. I suggested that she work a weight of some kind in with the stuffing of one of them to use as a doorstop. A freezer zip top bag of sand in the middle of the Polyfil worked. It also made it more stable for sitting around anywhere. I bought one of those selections of small skeins(17 of them) on line. Not suitable for amigurumi, so I'm going to use them for a double strand granny square "something."
