Heres one that i always encounter in every job ive ever had: the guy thats always "joking" but in reality hes actually attacking you ie: saying things about your family or children that would get your teeth knocked out if you were anywhere else but when you decide to treat him/her the same way its unacceptable. The "they have the right but you dont mentality".

In defense of us Over-Dressers: most of us actually dress for ourselves, not to show up our coworkers. Why is it impossible that we’d prefer to wear a jacket and tie? And in a workplace that has one of those “dress how you want” dress codes, why are we trying to police people for dressing how they want, just because it’s not how we’d dress ourselves?
@jasonmims5057

Yes. My workplace has a very casual dress code that allowed employees to wear jeans and tee shirts. before the pandemic I did not wear formal business attire. I wore button front shirts and dark denim jeans. The issue with a casual dress code is that people abuse it. Before I worked remotely I saw people coming to work in ripped jeans and tee shirts. I saw someone come to work in pajamas.

I could dress down a bit if I wanted but to be honest more formal attire is actually more comfortable! Even dress shoes - the less expensive ones they sell at places like Kohl’s with the comfort soles are way more comfortable than tennis shoes.

Fair point. Can't say I've ever had an issue with people who over-dress at work. I've seen a fair few under-dressers though..... I admit, I'm a jeans and t-shirt girl, but they are clean, in good repair, and I try to avoid any offensive graphics. I've seen people come to work it what I would have sworn was a beach cover-up (looked like towel material) and flip flops....There's casual, then there's the IDGAF (in a bad way) crowd.

I agree. Let me do my job. Let me take my break and I'm doing what my boss told me. Not what a co-worker told me because I have had co-workers. Try to act like my boss and tell me something. Totally different and tell me. Oh don't worry I don't want to do extra work so they told me to not do something or get something and I don't listen to them I'm not taking a chance of getting fired because of something they did or they told me I also don't like to put up with them. Trying to boss me around like they know more than the boss some of those people started working around the same time as me. Also, if we're short staffed, you're going to have to put more work in just as much as I do I'm not doing four times the load and without a break or I'm not leaving things for other people to do next time just because you didn't want to put more effort in If I listen to her I probably would get yelled at by my boss for leaving extra stuff to clean up. That would take probably like 30 minutes to clean up. Like no I'm not going to do that just because you don't want to do your work because my boss says something less than I forgot to pick up stuff to bring back to the kitchen

@jamesm47766 I am retired and do a little contract work to keep up on my fields tech and such and to keep busy. I am an engineer and technician in several highly technical fields and things are constantly changing. That is why I get so many contract job offers. Salary or non-exempt hourly workers tend to stagnate in their fields. I do not and never have. Even when I was a full-time worker for the company I retired from, I did not work for my, "Bos", supervisor, foreman, or whoever I reported to for my assignment overseer or at times several overseers and/or groups and communities. Most of the time I was self-managing being responsible for specific areas or projects. I worked for and work for the company that paid and pays me. In my work the person or people I report to often have no clue as to what I do or how to do it. A lot of times I would lose my job if I listened to the instructions of whoever was put over me. Most of the time it is an arbitrary decision on who I report to and they are just glorified task managers and have no clue as to my job requirements and have no education or training in my job field. The taskmaster types are the worst to report to. By the Gods I hate them! I am no longer in the military darn it! LOL. I am retired from that too. LOL

Let them fight it out. :) And in my civilian job, I worked in a Union Shop so a lot of what was told to me by a supervisor would be out of my skill set or pay grade so I would refuse. Let their boss deal with a Union grievance. As far as coworkers, They know better as they work in the same union shop I do. Can we talk about all the cringey things employers say like we’re a family etc 🙄 it annoys the hell out of me because it’s so manipulative, in the end it’s a business and they don’t care about anyone but themselves; also, coworkers are not your friends, no matter how much you talk or share with each other. I had a coworker tell me how much they enjoy working with me and was trying to convince me not to leave the job for a remote opportunity, and literally at the end of that day we were the last two to leave and I forgot my purse (which had my keys, phone, and wallet) inside without a key to go back in. This coworker who had just finished talking about how much he cared about all of us literally just drove away and left me outside without a care as to my well being in that situation. Luckily, I was given a key from a few offices down that had been working late and was able to go back inside to grab my purse, but it really pissed me off that this coworker of two years who seemed like a good, caring person didn’t actually give a crap about me as a person and would have left me outside in the cold to rot. We worked in an industrial area with no sidewalks so if no one in the nearby offices were still there I would have had to walk along the dangerous main road till I could find another business or store to use their phone.

There was a guy in our office that would “hock” a few times an hour most of the day. We were at a large company in an open environment so there was no real escape from it. I reminded myself he probably wasn’t doing it intentionally and either it was just bad habits or maybe a medical problem, but I eventually I talked to my boss about it and eventually it stopped. Loud talker at a previous job would march around with his headset on, up and down all the aisles, as if he wanted to make sure everyone in the area could hear what he was talking about. Then there are the ones who take conference calls on speaker phone in their cube, and crank the volume and loud as possible. My favorite pet peeve is the ones who come in to the office after bathing in perfume or cologne, and you can smell them from 100' away.
@cathyu.1487
@cathyu.1487 2 года назад
The perfume/cologne one is no joke. I shared an office once with a co-worker who had really bad allergies. If someone walked into our office wearing really strong cologne or perfume, within 15 minutes, her eyes would get swollen, she'd be uncontrollably sneezing, coughing, eyes tearing up, and would generally be miserable for the rest of the day. The first time I saw it happen, I stopped wearing scented anything - used unscented antiperspirant, laundry soap, etc. Really made me aware of that issue. I still don't wear perfume or cologne of any kind.

When it comes to the unavailable coworker, be careful because you don't know what's going on with their life outside of working hours. When my wife was diagnosed with cervical cancer and had to go to radiation daily and chemotherapy weekly, I became the unavailable coworker. I couldn't take extended time off with FMLA because that is unpaid. I still had to ensure rent, etc, was covered, but outside of work, I was driving her to appointments and eventually visiting her in hospice before she died at only 41 years old. Her struggling with cancer and having deteriorating health was not something I shared with my coworkers because it's not their business. So yeah, the unavailable coworker or the one who leaves early a lot or comes in late isn't always lazy or unprofessional. They could very well be dealing with something like a terminally ill family member and work just does not take priority over that. If FMLA were a paid benefit, it would be a lot easier, but since it's not, a lot of us still had to somehow work to bring home that paycheck that kept the lights on all while watching their spouse die before their eyes.

The worst for me are the whistlers, it's very intrusive in an otherwise quiet office. For some reason, if they know they're annoying you, they do it louder or more often. ANd you can't ask them to stop either because they do it more, at least the ones I've encountered. The worst is when you're trying to interview someone over the phone and that person is next to you whistling loudly.

I was the Unavailable Coworker at my old job, because it was the only way to make sure your days off were kept. The job was a security gig that has and will continue to have chronic and high turnover rates. For a time I helped alot by filling shifts, and to the end I worked 6 days a week for months, with one day working a regular 14 hour shift. In my opinion, I worked my fair share at a awful pay of 9 dollars an hour. Overtime paid 3 dollars more, but taxes digested a chunk of it so it wasn't worth it to work 112 hours in two weeks. The pay was awful, the benefits nonexistent, and it was a toxic work place where even the supervisors were toxic; with the lead supervisor even disrespecting me several times despite me helping him way back when he needed my help. One coworker dealt with retaliation from a supervisor for reporting another coworker for unsafe conduct. Another was forced to resign after standing up to a bully of a supervisor. Another worked two weeks straight only for a time request to be denied. For a time management even lied about the pay being higher to bait on fresh bodies, of which they promptly quit on principle. Being the Unavailable Coworker was the only way I was able to retain my sanity in a terrible workplace. Even now, the shortstaffing and high turnover is just as terrible as it was when I worked there. Management only cared about the millions they made off our backs and would burn us alive to appease the client if they complained. I have no guilt about making use of my limited personal time and never will.

Hello, overdressing actually suprised me. What about saying "Dress for the job you want, not the job you have"? How person dress shouldn't be main factor for promotion of course, but I it could show that person is a little bit more motivated for role than the one who just dress casually and doesn't bat an eye about it.
@p.s.shnabel3409
@p.s.shnabel3409 2 года назад
Fair point. I can see, though, how there's a lot of nuance to this topic. For example, I had a lady coworker who dressed in very classy outfits...working for a company that tries to promote a more casual feeling to walk-ins. That clashed, and you could tell some customers were taken aback by her. I think, though, she was not doing this on purpose. She was from another generation (she must be well in her 70's by now), and clearly brought up like this. On the other hand, I had a young girl go crazy on her first job interview: tight pencil skirt, tight blouse, high heels. It was horribly inappropriate, especially since she was all of 16. In the end, I think how we dress is very much an expression of our selves. So, if I feel I have to radically change my looks, I think I need to look for another job/position. I hope this didn't feel like unfair criticism of your comment. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Great list, I'd also add these: The food thief: The manager bought lunch today, but if you thought you would have the food you brought to work today for lunch tomorrow - you're wrong because it probably won't be there! The groomer: That person that cleans and clips their fingernails at their desk! Extra gross-out points if they also do their toenails! Our only reprieve is when his mouth was stuffed with sun flower seeds. He casually spit the shells on his desk and the surrounding area's, including around other peoples desks. Then he would bless us with his bad breath whistling mixed with sunflower seeds. He was a groomer too. Yay!!! And the best part, absolutely F'ing clueless about it all. I worked in a corporate setting for 20+ years and experienced nearly all of these at one time or another. Some individuals lack the ability to become self-aware for sure. I disagree with the suggestion that an overly dressed individual is annoying however. I was in a team lead role and frequently dressed to a higher level than most of my co-workers. To me it was about taking pride in my appearance (we were business casual) and setting a good example. Plus frankly it made me feel good to look nice. I noticed I performed at a higher level when I dressed more professionally. To add to the annoyingly loud co-worker I could include the one that calls everyone “honey” in addition to being a loud mouth. I’m a contract web developer and I swung from wearing button-ups, slacks, polished shoes and a tie at the start of my career to shorts and sandals in the middle of my career to jeans and casual button up up until I just started working from home. I was always told how nice I was supposed to dress for interviews and work until it occurred to me I didn’t need to dress up that much, I could get away with dressing more casually most places, and I didn’t want to work for places that required it. Recruiters are always telling me how nice to dress for interviews but I rarely take their advice, I’ve done it dozens (maybe approaching 100?) times and have a pretty good feel for what technical interviewers expect. At two ends of the spectrum I had a last minute interview for a startup in Boulder, the recruiter just said to get there ASAP (I don’t know why they scheduled it with such short notice) but I was out on a bike ride and didn’t have time to go home to change so I showed up to the interview in shorts and sandals and mildly sweaty and they were all dressed really casually as well. We joked about it and I got the job on the spot, them saying if I had dressed like the recruiter suggested (business formal, minus the jacket) they probably wouldn’t have hired me because I’d be too button down for the environment. On the other end of the spectrum I interviewed at Oppenheimer Funds (also for a web developer role) and was told to wear business formal including tie and jacket and I don’t even have those things so I just went with a button up and jeans. All of the developers were wearing slacks and tied and my interviewers were in three piece suits. It felt a little awkward but I was comfortable what I was wearing even if it didn’t fit in. They still offered the job but did say I’d have to step up the wardrobe but I declined since I don’t want to wear a suit to work.

So here we have a HR person giving advice that dressing well and professionally (he gave the example of man dressed in a suit and tie - a business standard for decades) is annoying in an office environment. So let's celebrate Sloppy Joe as your ideal colleague. Sloppy Joe lives in a place where water is in short supply (only his home apparently), so he doesn't bathe everyday, he shaves once a week, if he feels like it, wears worn out dirty jeans and t shirt to work, and his runners is covered in dirt. His badly coffee stained teeth hasn't seen a dentist since the last decade, and his body odour reeks two cubicles over. Let's choose Sloppy Joe over the well dressed, well groomed, professional colleague who looks the part of the work he does. The real problem though is usually a person who is well dressed and take good care of their appearance, causes the eye sores of lazy, sloppy characters decorating offices today to feel lousy about themselves and then they try to do what this guy is doing, going after someone who invests the time, cost, and effort to look professional. Those well dressed folks often are also well spoken and those two things alone can matter significantly in career success. It's the same when we see very fit and active people being despised by overweight, unfit people, and very attractive women being harassed by those who never get even a glance in their direction. In most of the world (not Sloppy Joe's America) well dressed is the standard for the office and still is in 2021. Telling people that being well dressed is annoying is the WORST advice ever to come from a HR person.
@breannap8585
@breannap8585 2 года назад
He didn't say well-dressed, he said over-dressed. I worked with a Sloppy Joe before, very unprofessional and gross. He always looked dingy and unkempt and his smell would linger around the office. Not the person anyone wants to see handling their sensitive information. People complained, but management was too busy trying to flirt with and policing the female employees to care. I'm so glad that company went under.

Some of this sounded like you got a very personal issue with it. What clicked with me is the overdressing part. I have seen overdressed suck ups in the past who openly admitted to me that they don’t mind to suck up to move on up the ladder faster. It worked for them because the management bought their sucking up. Currently I am overdressing for my role but for a different reason. I work in tech and decided to move away from wearing jeans, hoodies and skate shoes to business casual except I don’t have any business casual apparel. So what did I do? I used all the business pants and shirts that I previously bought for wedding and other special events. In other words, it’s possibly a person chose not to spend money on business casual and overdressing as a result because they don’t feel comfortable spending hundreds of dollars on cloth. I immigrated to US when I was 19 at the beginning of 2008 recession so I tend to minimize my spendings. I will spend $300 on a brand new unopened second hand nardi steering wheel cause it’s worth it and I will enjoy it for the rest of my life as long as I take good care of it. I will not spend $300 on rags that will wear out in a year or two. Don’t judge a book by its cover. I noticed that my coworkers are uncomfortable and a bit alienating as a result, but I also noticed that other coworkers did not prejudge and are super cool. Kind of filtered out the insecure assholes automagically.

I have found the many employers which I worked for. The was a lot of complaining because management could never anything alone the rules & regulations didn't anger the average hourly employee & was satisfied with their job. They had to come up with new rules or regulations that pissed off almost everyone all the time (GE). Such as when & how much vacation you could take, to how many paid sick days and when you could take them. Then they stated every hour employee was going to be required 8-16 hours overtime, especially on Saturdays & Sundays. But management was not required to do so. then when a problem arouse, there was no supervisor or engineering support available. And here is the stupid part, if we had to shut the machine down, we were not allowed to another machine but were required to sit at our machine not running while also getting payed time & a half or double time until our shift ended.

I love this video. It is well written and just light hearted enough in the wording to be well received by all. Most of you probably don't want to read any further and that's OK. I scored a 6 on this scale. I am always working to overcome all of them, but here's what I'm fighting: I am partially deaf and can't always tell how loud I am being coupled with the fact that my voice naturally resonates well (I sing tenor) and well, my co-workers have learned to shoot me a quick reminder on Teams as needed which is occurring less frequently. I have extreme ADHD. Makes me awesome as a data engineer, but not so great on the social side. My awesome co-workers have joined me in joking about it and keeping it light which goes a long way towards helping me actually overcome. However, whoever made up the rule that we can't eat strait from the can, you're completely illogical and, after considerable analysis, I absolutely refuse to follow that one. Deal with it. Our company really needs all three of us data engineers because some of the work just plain takes time and we need enough of us to do it when it's needed, but unlike my peers, I have found ways to become extremely efficient in the daily stuff. Some of my processes and scripts are gradually being adopted by the others, but some of it is just to hard for them to understand yet. So I often do the same amount of work in an hour as one of them takes days, or downtimes weeks to do. Yes, I occasionally Kerbal at work. But I am so drastically underpaid that when you look at it, they are getting their money's worth out of me. Especially since I am the guy the others turn to when they just can't figure out. Because of my ADHD, I am regularly tossed into the completely unfamiliar problem and pull off the needed miracle. So I've managed to get into a cubicle in the back corner and try not to be so obvious. I also do volunteer to help where I can, but I don't have all skill sets. If you ask my to help with accounting I usually make a bigger mess than you had to begin with. If the work requires working with an intricate GUI, I struggle. My brain sees a perfectly logical explanation for why the thing I'm looking for would fit under every menu and because of my lack of natural social skills, I have no way to guess which one average people would look under first. A similar thing happens with icons though not as bad. (I'm the guy making sense out of screens full of hexadecimal data) and while I am fantastically skilled at helping with the tech support calls, I do have phone phobia which is an actually legit phobia and taking calls for too long is psychologically harmful to me. (Too many meds required.) I guess what I'm saying is joking about this stuff is good. It helps the annoying co-worker know that you recognize that it's not the end of the world. But also please recognize that it really isn't the end of the world and we really are trying hard to overcome.

My annoying co-workers were The Walkers. My tall cubicle was next to an inner-ring aisle that people used to walk for exercise. The walkers (usually women, and often from another floor) would be chatting loudly as they passed by my cubicle without seeing me, or me them. I'd hear them coming, hear them passing, and and hear them going away. And then the next duo would do the same thing. And then they'd come back for another pass. I was a programmer and it was affecting my concentration. Signs asking for quiet were not noticed or ignored. One day I had had enough and blurted out, "Shut the f*** up!" to a passing duo. One of the walkers chuckled and they kept on going. I had just cussed them out and they probably thought I was talking to somebody else behind the wall. Even when I took a stand, I wasn't noticed. I was truly invisible. Eventually I moved away from that area and contract programmers moved in, along with shorter cubicles. Maybe the short cubicles, as un-private as they were, let passers-by see that there were people who could hear them. Or else the contractors, being merely temps, could not complain.

What you are about to read is not in my head nor is it a movie. It's a new reality for me at the job. There's something strange going on at the site in reference to me as an employee. Beyond the shadow of doubt, I know that someone has been going around defaming my good name and character in the building. As you know, this act is against the law. This is called defamation of character. Am I right? Why do I say this? Many of the people who have been friendly to me for more than two years have suddenly stopped communicating, especially when I am posted in the lobby. This new attitude towards me started about 5 weeks ago. I firmly believe that many of the employees from various departments are trying to make me feel unwanted hoping that I would leave the site. I spoke to several of my coworkers about what is happening to me. They told me to simply ignore the silent treatment, do my job and go home. Of course, this is easier said than done. There is a group effort to make me feel unwanted and uncomfortable. If I did something wrong or offended anyone, I would like to know exactly what I did that would compel a group of employees who have been saying hello to me for more than two years to suddenly stop all communications. By the way, this is only happening to me and not my coworkers. The silent treatment is only directed to me when posted in the lobby. I don't know who started the rumor, why the rumor was started and what exactly was spread about me. The rumor has ruined my good name and character not only in the lobby but on different floors and into several departments. If one or two employees decided that they no longer wanted to talk to me, I would not bother to post my story here. However, the number of people who continue to give me the silent treatment grows on a daily basis. Everyday, without exaggeration, a new employee is added to the DON'T TALK TO ME list, if you know what I mean. It is hard to work and be ignored. I make a decent salary and so walking away from the job is not a good idea. Questions: 1. What is the best way to handle the silent treatment at the job? 2. What would you do in my situation? 3. What is the main reason for giving an employee the silent treatment?

I sad yup the hurry up and left the office to go home! I don’t want her and no one from work in my! One day, early in the morning, I’m at my desk, drinking my coffee and answering my email, this dang women comes to my desk and puts all her folders ON MY DESK AND PULLS UP THE CHAIR RIGHT NEXT TO ME! That’s was so weird! Then she’s like stares at me. So I ask her, are we suppose to work on something together? She says no. So I just looked at her confused because I never see nothing like this before in the office. I get up from my desk and took at 15 minutes “bathroom break”. When I get back to my desk, all her folders is gone and she’s sitting back at her desk. Even my other co-worker was like WTH.. that’s weird! THEN! I Notice she started watching me and slightly checking me out! I turn around and she her looking at my butt! I’m like I wonder is she’s a lesbian. Mind you this women is like 59 or 60 married with kids. So idk. One day I’m leaving to go home because I have a slightly early shift. She make a comment, oh you always like at 4:30 on the dot! What about the coworker who doesn't mind their own business and is extremely judgmental? How about the one who skips songs on your stereo and thinks they know what music is best for everybody? Or the one who has every excuse not being able to compete their tasks and expect you to catch their slack and are the first to ask to go home early? What about drama queens and kings? The list goes on and on! There are way too many of these people in the workplace!😩😒🤯

Proud President, CEO, and Founder of The Vultures Inc. I was the one who let everyone else know when there was food left over in the conference room after a catered meeting.

I am in a team of nine and each one of these categories exists in those who sits closest to me. Plus I have a toxic boss who seems to hate me for no good reason. That's why I am looking elsewhere and shall take the leap the first chance I get.
