Nice Ron! All your techniques you demonstrated in this video were the same back in the 60’s . Funny, the same technique you use to fold sand paper is what my dad taught me in his body shop in the 60’s. Really brings back memories! Thanks.

Luv the clip. I have a question though... I have a beautiful 40 year old bedroom set handed down from my in laws, that doesn't take any damage, its amazing how well its held up. I would love to know what might have been used on the tops of the dressers... it is a very hard finish on wood and is a bit shinny. I woukd love to use this type of finish on my dinner table due to a large family with many mishaps...nicks and dings on our 10yr old table

Ron, I recently refinished my coffee table. The result was not that good. I attempted to hid all the scratch marks. I first sanded with 120 than 220. I still see the sanding lines. Where did I go wrong? Thanks Donald
@Taznor13
@Taznor13 7 лет назад
ddoungpanya was it a soft wood? Did you hand sand? Also you might have to go a little finer on the paper defending on the type of wood.. Hope this helps!

Refinishing a beautiful wood table top always appears to be easy when true artists and re-finishers demonstrate the work .but sometimes these videos are edited and many steps toward getting the final result are left out. I had the same problem,once, in attempting to refinish a small table top, which had two additional shelves. It could have been discouraging, but a friend pointed out to me that many other steps are necessary too thin the beautiful surface I hoped for. Humidity I should checked before starting wood finish coats. Be sure the stain applied to each layer is thoroughly dry, allow a couple of days, and lightly sand again with the grain, using a new flat foam sanding pad. Remove all the resulting dust and debris with a vacuum, leave it alone for a few days as before. Once again, before opening the stain or finish, remember your vacuum. Turn off all fans, air conditioners,, close windows, which can cause unwanted dust to drift and maybe settle on your tabletop. Take time to wipe it completely with a recently purchased Tack Wipe or Cloth, opened and re-folded several times. No need to bear down,, but wipe all the surfaces underneath, too . Pour a mixture containing enough material for another application, I prefer buying new lined paint cans and lids when refinishing wood.and flow the finish on once more.following the manufactures instructions. Again, I use a new brush. Allow this coat to dry and cure for as long as a week, it will sand with finer results. I use another new foam sanding block at this stage, (180 grit to 200 ) very lightly, sanding only in the grain of the wood. Tack up the residue and use your vac, again . Let this coat dry and cure, as it seems to bind with the wood rather than just being a coat of stain or varnish which was slapped on the table top. Several days later, vac gently with the brush attachment and vac else everything again. At this point, I very lightly use a much finer grit (400- 800) foam finishing sanding block. and have often purchased flexible sanding sheets (200- 400 grit) made by 3 M to carefully detail slightly rubbed edges.. I have been very pleased with the results, and always enjoy the challenge and find it to be very rewarding, though not with instant results. But while I'm in my 'Happy Place', I find relaxation and many times enjoy the opportunity for a bit of meditation. I'm a 80 year old lady who grew up watching him at his workbench. I thought that was so much fun, it didn't occur to me that I I was really learning something useful. Perhaps you will find something here useful.. Don't be discouraged or impatient. I do hope you continue developing your very own special technique, and let us hear again about your works in progress! Elizabeth C.

Fabric softner has chemical and your product might not stick over it. No different from a house cleaner useing a chemical clean to clean the baseboard and when u try to paint over it the the will seperate . I've been dealing with these kind of problems many years. If your useing a latex hot soapy water if you use a oil based wipe down with a thinner rag

Okay can you tell me what I'm doing wrong I put wood finish on the tops of my desk and stuff and somehow they are not smooth and they're rough so what am I doing wrong to make my table tops beautiful
@jerrywhite3095
@jerrywhite3095 6 лет назад
Daniel Longest . It depends a lot of times on the type of wood. When I sand down a piece of wood, I often times will put a coat of varnish on the wood, let it dry and then sand really good. You will get a more evenly stained piece of wood, especially soft wood...pine for example.

I have watched several videos of yours about finishing and see you making one big mistake. You should not dump that much finish in a cup. Once it is poured out, it changes it's consistency as it dries or it could pick up contaminants from the brush or from the piece. When those things happen, you need to dispose of all the finish you poured and can't put it back in the container. Only take out what you need or less than what you need. That way you don't waste your finishing product.

Lol Just stained my first project I literally did none of these. Unless you count storing it to do overnight in an old non working microwave on the back porch!! That counts as the tent idea doesn't it??? LOL I'll do better next time. LOL Thanks for the tips!!! As a novice I'm gaining a lot of ideas and good experience with just my piddle projects. Maybe some day I'll actually figure out how to sell that things and make back some of the money I've spent getting started.
