A young female suspect, who turns 13 this week, is facing murder charges after police in Humboldt, Tennessee say she used bedding to choke the life out of her cousin, 8-year-old Demeria Hollingsworth, allegedly in a fight over a cell phone. Law&Crime’s Jesse Weber gains insight on what happens next in a case like this from Steve Mulroy, district attorney of nearby Shelby County.

Don’t need too! I was adamant that my children could not sleep over anyone’s homes but to spite me my daughter’s dad had her everywhere and now my daughter has told her story. It was not on my watch and that is the only peace I have about it.

@MarianneMalyj Don't worry she will probably get a very heavy sentence. Yet not like an adult. Cause this could warrant a death sentence and I feel it's too much considering she is a child. I remember a similar case where two 12yo had killed a friend stabbing her repeatedly because of "slender man". They thoroughly planned to kill her for weeks, it was so vicious. Anyways, one got 25 years and the other 40 years. The one that got 25 years had about 7 years to serve and could be out and watched till she is 37 years old. She is 21 now and they are still holding her in a mental institute for now.

When I was 12 I had a sleepover with my cousins and I had this one cousin who was a heavy snorer. I actually remember wanting to put a pillow over her face just to stop her snoring but I didn’t! I had self control and just went back to sleep. I totally forgot about that until hearing about this case and it’s so shocking to me. This 12 year old definitely has issues because at this age you should know right from wrong. I knew that it was wrong to smother my cousins face with a pillow and forced myself to go back to sleep but this 12 year old actually spent 4 mins killing her cousin and even took the time to clean up her mess and make it seem like she was in a deep sleep. She clearly knew she did something bad, she needs to be punished as an adult

A pillow over someones face is different than smothering. In smothering the person fights back. They scratch, pull, buck their hips. When the child was in obvious distress compassion, mercy, love and in even self preservation should have kicked in

I’ve heard of this. There was a case of parents trying to get their son institutionalized because he was terrorizing the whole family, including trying to kill his little sisters. Parents were at their wits end since they could leave him alone or else he was breaking and hurting someone or something. Therapy and meds didn’t help either.

For a 12 year old girl to be so stone cold to cover her cousin's face while the little girl flailed around she held her down until she knew she was gone. It takes a few minutes to do that. For a 12 year old to harbor so much anger , and jealousy over a phone tells me there's something wrong with that kid. I might feel different if she had done this crime in some other way, but this is something different. Pre meditated , and cold blooded. I've been locked up with 12 year olds that have done this and they didn't change when they got out at 18. That was 40 years ago and it's only gotten worse

This has nothing to do with phone addiction and everything to do with mental issues or illnesses. There's a lot of ways to handle things and it was not even in the heat of anger because she waited for her to go to sleep! This was calculated and shows a lack of emotions or sympathy for others.

Her age too may be an issue with successful rehabilitation. At 12 she’s probably gone through puberty and has entered young womanhood. I believe pre-puberty is best when it comes to “nipping it in the bud” ,so to speak.

Yeah, everyone is calling her a psychopath when it's probably more likely that she's been abused and neglected and has formed behavioral issues as a result. Also not to be That Person but 12 year olds don't need smartphones and it could be entirely possible that this girl had a tech addiction. Sometimes neglected children will have their entire lives be tech, computer, video games, and the second you take that away it's like you've taken away everything they've ever loved and they don't have the emotional regulation to handle it because the brain DOES register it as being like a drug addiction; the extreme anger is part of the "withdrawal" from the constant stimulation, anger which could also be increased by an abusive past or already existing mental health issues. This poor kid probably never had a chance from the second she was born 😢

The problem isnt that the kids had phones, the world is changing. The problem is that the kid couldnt bear to go without a phone. Kids are more and more addicted to a screen these days, so are adults. But difference is kids are growing and need stimulation outside of a device, because the internet is constantly used to exploit how a person's mind works.

This is what happens when kids are left stuck in front of iPhones or iPads all day it becomes their entire world and it consumes them. It lessens their sense of reality in this world. Its easy to brand the child evil without knowing anything about her life or why things got so bad in her mind she felt the need to do this. The case is tragic for many reasons.

This is a horrible tragedy for the family. You have siblings that are probably divided because one of their children has been killed and the other one is the one who did it. Then you have the grandparents who lost a grandchild due to murder and are losing another to jail because of their actions. And the grandparents’ children are probably divided so they probably don’t have a family gathering anymore. 😢 This is so heartbreaking 💔 and the child who could strangle their cousin and then “clean up) the scene, needs serious help and time behind bars.

If teachers were allowed to speak publicly about students behavior, I’m willing to bet this 12 year old was always a problem. Teachers and other students suffer greatly, on a daily basis, at the hands of students with behavior issues. From kindergarten through high school. No power to make decisions about intense therapy. We and other students are forced to adapt to cater to atrocious circumstances.

I was bullied by cousins, molested by one. One locked me in a furnace closet. I've been jumped by cousins, and one, now deceased, pulled a butcher knife 🔪 out on me, and chased me through the house... (that was in my youth). Please ask your children questions about their visits, who was there and how do they get along. You dont have to be their friends but you want them to have a BBF trust for communication with them. If you're rigigid, mean, always fussing or belittling..., your child or children are less likely to speak with you on important / traumatic matters; or experiences...

I believe this tragedy wasn't just about an IPhone, the 12 year old seemed to have pent up anger and rage and directed it at her 8 year old cousin, possibly out of jealousy and envy. Its reminiscent of Eric Smith's case where he killed a 4 year old taking out his anger on a younger defenseless child due to his own insecurities. Its a heartbreaking situation it tugs at my heartstrings because I have a 8 year old little girl and cannot fathom something like this happening to her. Prayers to the family, Rest in Peace sweet girl.
