In this video, I will demonstrate cutting wood using both a plain end, twisted spiral blade and a traditional pin end blade which is not twisted. The advantage of using a spiral blade is that it cuts in any direction that you push the wood. This allows you to push the wood forward, backward, or side-to-side to make a cut. A traditional blade requires you to push the wood straight forward through the blade (not side-to-side) and most times, requires you to rotate the wood slightly (clockwise) to stay on the cut line.
Because a spiral blade cuts in any direction, it has been said that making accurate cuts using this blade is more difficult (the cut is harder to control) especially for a beginner. In this video, I will be testing this idea to determine for myself, "Are spiral blades harder to control than traditional blades?"
Spiral blades are plain end blades (with no pins). To use them, the blade clamps on your saw must be able to hold plain end blades. In a previous video, I showed you how I installed new blade clamps on my saw so that I could use plain end blades. Here's a link to that video: • 116. Installing pinles...
Being able to use pinless (flat or plain end) blades opens up more blade choices (there is a greater variety of pinless blades than pin end blades). The pinless blades also require a much smaller pilot hole when making inside cuts.

I have to practice on some scrap pieces before I use it on my project. Once you get used to them, you’ll enjoy using them more! Thanks for showing that I’m not the only one that has to practice! Corners are where the difference really show up. MDF in no thicker cut than 1/2. Inch. Birch is nice , some good pine wood, not plywood really great. Overall I use pinned blades. Thanks for the ideas!

Yes, spiral blades do take practice when used in the conventional way. Then I did this experiment: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NVUfa8sS3Pw.html . I found that using a fence with a spiral blade makes a straight cut easier to do. I plan to revisit the idea of using a fence on a scroll saw soon so stay tuned! Thanks for your comment and for watching.

Interesting experiment, haven't tried a scroll saw yet, but I'm currently learning to use a small bandsaw, looks like there is some crossover. Merry Christmas!

I highly recommend trying out a scroll saw at some point. At the moment, I am focused on making videos about the scroll saw because I think it is so versatile and accessible to just about everyone (they are not very expensive tools and are relatively safe to use). Band saws are also great tools. With the blade always moving down toward the table, the piece you are cutting is very easy to control. The downside of the band saw is that it can't make inside cuts while a scroll saw can. A while ago, I made a couple of videos comparing the band saw, scroll saw, and BladeRunner (an inverted jigsaw). Here are the links if you are interested: 41. Comparing the BladeRunner, scroll saw, and band saw: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mVGa4cUj_nY.html 84.
