On Independence Day I had a slider up malfunction that I was unable to clear so I had to cutaway the main and go to my reserve which worked perfectly and was probably the best flare I've had on a reserve to date. This was my 3rd reserve ride skydiving and coincidently my 1200th jump. Grace was my passenger and did great!

You should have all emergency procedures learned by heart. The reserve chute is also made to open very fast and fail less. A jump is actually a pretty calm experience if you know your stuff.

The Cutaway is in my right hand (the yellow cables). The blue is Spectra line from the reserve handle (this would be metal on sport rig)

What the heck was with the warpy reserve? o.O That shit flared up my anxiety... Reminded me of the video where someone had a malfunction with main (trailing pilot chute) and reserve (not sure what, but big malfunction). Happy ending, but only by luck because he didn't cutaway his main and managed to deploy it by manually pulling it out (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XbfNWbMvSXk.html) Makes me rethink skydiving every time (I'm considering first tandem next year xD) What was the malfunction in your tandem video?
@KakashiYuy
@KakashiYuy 5 дней назад
@AuroraClair The malfunction was slider up and it wouldn't come down. The reserve was doing a stall surge because the brakes are set right at the edge of stalling but not dangerous. You are right, it can be uncomfortable in a stall surge, especially when it's your reserve but when this happened I had recently completed a paragliding SIV course where I had been purposely individuals stall surges so it was still familiar. If you are interested in skydiving go for it, being nervous is normal but once you get to the dropzone and watch a few groups of people land successfully it will help with your nerves.

What's wrong with this "Banana" Reserve?
@KakashiYuy
@KakashiYuy Год назад
Nothing wrong with it, but on that model of reserve the brake lines are stowed fairly deep and that puts it on the edge of stalling, once I unstowed the brakes it flew perfect.

@gouda2872 If you end up getting into paragliding and do a SIV course then you will get a lot of experience with stall surges like that. But you are correct most other tandem instructors I work with really don't like it lol.

Allowing TDM's to film themselves would not happen at my DZ if I was still a DZM, it looks unprofessional and seems to be driven by money NOT making sure the customer gets the best experience, I have 8000 jumps so am speaking from experience.....
@KakashiYuy

I agree that outside video creates a superior product for freefall, but the hand cam allows for shots under canopy that can't be achieved with outside video alone. I have seen a few drop zones do a mix of both editing them together. I just huck the drogues and don't know much about the economics of it all, but it does appear that handcam is here to stay.
