First reserve ride - Total "nothing out" malfunction

The pin got stuck in the kill-line check window and the main failed to get free. Not all bridles are capable of this, but mine was.
Spectre 210 in Mirage G3 container with Wings bridle. 190 Techno reserve.

My first cutaway was a high speed pilot chute in tow malfunction. I got my reserve open by 1500ft. I only had 143 jumps at the time. It actually gave me a confidence boost in my reserve gear that I had never seen or flown before. It gave me confidence in the emergency procedures and process. I got really really drunk that night

I used to put my pin in, pull it back out retighten the pack and put the pin back in so I knew it didn't take hardly any pressure to release the pin...btw my first reserve ride was on my 16th jump.

Well played mate. Nice EPs. Be careful with stowing that PC too well, if your main d-bag drops out you need to be able to toss that fast
@Leksi80
@Leksi80 6 лет назад
True, in a way. That's why I didn't close my suit all the way up just to be sure(wasn't sure the pin was really jammed the way it was - thou it felt really stuck before releasing the reserve). In that moment thou, if the pin would have opened there would have not been anything to generate the force needed to open the double stowed loops of the D-bag. No airspeed to mention(just riding the reserve) and the PC was in my suit. So the risk of 2 our after the PC-to-suit insertions was rather low.

@@Leksi80 Think there is still a possibility of lines unstowing simply from the force of the main/dbag falling out of the container.

did you start routing bridle from the bottom after this or still on the right side?
@Leksi80
@Leksi80 4 года назад
From the bottom after this incident. And I changed the bridle to a type that does not have that potential problem. So I did both improvements that should minimize the possibility to ever getting this again. Also now-a-days I have a new modern container also, but still route it from the bottom...

Sebastian Velandia Just a brain fart. Had a pilot chute in tow so in the moment thought there was no reason to chop(having nothing out). In hind sight you should always release the main just in case if the pinlock will resolve and release the main after the reserve deploys. Already had my second reserve ride in which I did the correct prosedure.
@gofastER
@gofastER 6 лет назад
My first malfunction was a pilot chute in tow. It was only my 32nd jump and was my first jump back from a broken knee. Misrouted the bridle so it couldn't pull the pin. I wasn't thinking to just pull my reserve. I instantly thought "look red grab red...." and did exactly that. By the way that happened back in 2000 and ever since then my sternum pops and cracks on a regular basis.
@theginganinjaofficial

If you pull your PC and nothing happens, chop then reserve
@Dionisio181
@Dionisio181 5 лет назад
Cutaway and then reserve or just reserve, both are correct. Cutaway and reserve is just a way to keep things simple and in this sport to keep things mentally simple save lives.
@phutton88
@phutton88 4 года назад
Straight to reserve if there's a total main malfunction. If your reserve fails and you can cut it away with a knife and have the altitude to do so, you may be able to get the main container open to deploy that parachute 🤙 EPs will only bring so much benefit, so you have to think outside the box. We're seeing crazy, new malfunctions all the time!
