A few years ago, we made a video highlighting the arrival of NVIDIA’s then-new GeForce NOW game streaming service on Chromebooks. It was a big moment as the first real competitor to Google’s own Stadia finally showed up with a proper web-based version and ever since that point, GeForce NOW has always been in the conversation when we talk about game streaming services.
Now that Google has ceded defeat in the space, the remaining contenders - GeForce NOW, XBOX Cloud Gaming and Luna - are still going strong and each come with their own upsides. XBOX clearly has a ton of great titles and a huge, existing player base while Luna has the funding of Amazon, a very nice PWA and solid user interface to go along with it.
GeForce NOW, on the other hand, feels a bit like it sits in a league of its own. With access to games via Steam, Ubisoft and Epic, NVIDIA’s streaming game platform is by far the best of all worlds, combining an established user base (PC players), a cleaned up UI, and a large library of great games. With titles like Fortnite, Cyberpunk 2077 and Apex Legends just a click away, GeForce NOW delivers what you want in a game streaming service and does so better than anyone else out there at the moment.
With the launch of Google’s new gaming-focused Chromebooks, GeForce NOW has added the ability for 120Hz gaming at up to 1600p for those on the highest tier of their service, and the combination of that ability with these new gaming-focused Chromebooks is something special. Sure, anyone in the Chrome browser at this point can take advantage of these higher frame rates and better resolutions, but these new Chromebooks are built from the ground up to take full advantage of all of it.

Total slap in the face to all of those of us who supported and really enjoyed Stadia.

And what's really disappointing: None of the remaining alternatives seem to have ambitions of making their services full platforms like Stadia pursued. Integrated achievements, communication/messaging, profile features. It felt fully serviceable and native; not some sandboxed virtual machine afterthought.

ive been using cloud gaming for a year now and i won't go back to having a normal pc! it's just so much more convenient and cheaper imo. a 3080 laptop would be close to $2-3k and would have very short battery life.

@MANNY you've gotta keep in mind how quickly your investment becomes outdated. You've gotta keep updating that PC with new parts every year or two to keep playing cutting edge games. I'd rather just pay a monthly fee, myself.

And it has been really nice being able to continue my grind while sitting on the couch with my family watching a movie/show that I'm not really interested in but want to spend some time with the fam.

Just seems like a reasonable Chromebook for somebody that just wants a $500 Chromebook and a backlit keyboard for general purposes. This might be an interesting option over something like an Acer spin 713 on the resale market just for a general purpose device. I don't really need a gaming Chromebook personally as I'm not into cloud gaming. I know this has become a punchline anyways because of the closure of stadia but the Lenovo one with the compelling price point is pretty interesting on its own even as just a regular old Chromebook.

Cloud game works great for not so latency sensitive games. But many of the popular games like fps, or fast paces games latency is a no no. "But I hardly notice the latency". Well, play for an hour in cloud gaming, then go to your pc and try same game. If you dont notice any difference, well .

I think this is an awesome computer. I love the screen and the speakers and going from a 12th Gen Core i3 to the i5 will be an update. I bought it and it arrives Saturday. I'm so excited and can't wait to use it. I really like the complete aluminum chassis. My MacBook Air has a complete aluminum chassis as well. That one has a good screen also. The 350 nits of brightness will be a bit of an increase over my present Chromebook. While I like Apple products, I'm still a huge fan of the Chromebook and this one (516 GE) is a good one to obtain. Thank you for your thorough review of how the gaming looks and works on it. I'm sold on it as a Premium device for everyday use.

First of all good videos. Very informative on Chromebook usage. Secondly, are there any apps or websites that can be used with Chromebooks for video recording with the external camera? We have a regular laptop connected to a camera to shoot and record videos on OBS then I use Canva to put it together for my school. Does OBS work on Chromebooks? any alternatives? Which Chromebook will be best at it currently? Any info would be great.

I'm a cloud gamer and I have a Lenovo C340-15 FHD Intel i3 Chromebook for a year and a half. And I must say from those "older" Chromebooks - they are very bad choice for cloud gaming. Battery, thermal and WiFi management is a pain in the... on Intel processors. GeForce Now works okay'ish on shorter sessions. Xcloud works fine (but it's beta and overall stream quality is let's call it - average for modern standards). Stadia need plugin for selecting codec and resolution and forcing 720p otherwise it stutter from time to time. I get much more reliability and stability from Chromecast with Google TV and ethernet adapter. No issues at all except the fact that you need to manually install xcloud app from the APK.
@3CityRide

Haven't watched full but ~8:47 it stutters so painfully to watch. Still poorly optimized. So I'm sitting on my older Chromebook.

I don't know who their going to sell these so called "gaming Chromebooks" to, but it won't be me. Robby likes it, but if it's expensive, high-end, overpriced, and completely unnecessary, Robby always likes it.
