Here's update #3 on my 125-gallon planted Sailfin Molly Aquarium. Over the past few weeks the plant growth has been extremely rapid. The Jungle Vallisneria and Hornwort, in particular, require routinely trimmings in order to prevent them from blocking light from entering the aquarium.
In this video, I give a closer look at some of the fish in the aquarium and the varieties of Sailfin Mollies. Because of the tank's wide assortment of mollies, there are plenty of hybrid babies which I also highlight. Ive always beem fascinated with Mollies but as a kid we could NOT keep them alive to save our lives. So I jusy gave up on them. Then when I got in the hobby I was hesitant but started with a simple four Mollies...who gave me generation after generation. Then I messed around and got a Silver Sailfin Molly and fell in love.

They can be difficult to keep alive if they come from the store in poor health or you have soft water, amazing fish though! colorful and lively, hard not to love them

That's a very colourful selection of fish! I made a channel to show you can make low-maintenance, small planted aquariums out of glass bottles and I keep a few shrimp and snails in a glass drinks dispenser! My two latest videos on my channel shows the aquariums with commentary with one showing three shrimp fighting over an algae wafer!

Awesome setup here! Really like your variety of color, breed and all over aesthetics of the tank. I’m curious though, where do you get all your stock from? LFS? Online? I’ve got my own 29gal that I’m looking to stock soon with my own variation of mollies...I hope you don’t mind but I’m curious as to your top favorites in your own tanks? Which would you highly suggest/recommend to get?

Kenneth McGraw thanks man, I appreciate it! I get usually get my stock from my LFS, haven’t really tried online although I wouldn’t doubt being able to get some great fish. I’ve even picked up some great mollies from Petco/pet supermarket at times so I wouldn’t overlook chain stores completely. As far as your 29, you should get whatever mollies you personally like. Some suggestions for oranges and yellows are Red Sunset Sailfins and Goldust. If you like metallic-like varieties, the silver Sailfins are pretty hard to beat. All black sailfin mollies look great as well. There are a TON of different varieties so these are only a few of my favorites, pick up whatever piques your interest. I hope you’re able to set up a great tank, would love to see some footage of it!

none at all for mollies, they're not able to crossbreed with the others. platies and swordtails are able to crossbreed if you're worried about that though

@@sailfinaquatics not real worried about the cross breeding. More worried about the aggression. I've heard sword swordtails are aggressive and nippy to other fish

I have heard something like that, however, I believe that is only when the babies do not get their required nutrition through frequent feedings. I have successfully raised a few to maturity with large sailfins, it took a lot of time though. Do you have a link for the website you read this on?

datplaylist10 my frys got the fins but not the size. The female is 3 inches and the male was 2.8 while the frys are barely 1.5 after a year

Some of these won't because not all of these mollies are sailfins. As to your question, all sailfin males will develop an enlarged dorsal fin it's just some will be larger than others. I have had males not sex out until two plus years old.

Do sailfins require different water than shortfin mollies? I’ve had many shortfin mollies and sailfin mollies, bought sailfin one’s from different places and even green wild ones but never succeeded. Never had problem with shortfinned ones, anybody know why that’s the case?

Sailfins do get larger and require more space, generally they'll do great in the same water as shortfins but they do better in hard water with pH between 7.5 and 8.5

Great video ! Do they "cross" breed ? I d love to have different types of mollies in my tank but I am afraid a silver blue one would breed with a golden marble one for exemple. How does it work for you ?

thanks! yes they do cross breed, at the time I wasn't selectively breeding so i'd let them breed as they chose. The results of the breeding came out great on a few occasions with really colorful mixes with large sailfins and other times they wouldn't turn out so good with brown/bland coloration. If you are looking to breed selectively you cannot keep males of one strain in a tank with females of another as they will definitely breed. An all female or all male tank of different strains is possible though.

Bernardo Bonilla no salt in the tank at the moment, in the past it was 1 and 1/2 tablespoons per gallon. Not sure how that converts to liters.

I've had this same problem but only with cobomba, they leave my hornwort alone so I think a nutrient deficiency for the cobomba making them eat it.

I use beamswork lights, they're great and not too expensive as well. You can find them on amazon, I run my lights for 10 hours without a problem so 12 should be fine

As long as your filtration is good for your tank size and you're not overstocking anything should be good! I usually just use a hang on the back for my tanks and canisters for my ponds

It's remarkable that a 125 gallon tank is dedicated to mollies. I don't like that you have mixed very nice fish with very poor quality ones. Notably missing are solid black mollies. In time, it will be interesting to see the finnage in the hybrids, but color will likely be predominantly yellowish with some black spotting. You could also let one of your pure velifera males spend a week in this tank to introduce some wild vigor to the gene pool.

not sure what you mean by poor quality or nice, these fish are all from an lfs I wouldn't say there's anything specifically high or low quality about them. I see the ones I like and I buy them, nothing more, nothing less.
