I've been playing around with cooking off 12v for a while now.
I thought I'd film something for you to share my experiences preparing meals for 10 days off-grid with an induction cooker and an air fryer.
For 10% off anything ALLSPARK, use my discount code 'WILD' at checkout.
I'm running;
- 150ah ALLSPARK Lithium Battery (175/320a discharge)
offroadliving.com.au/products...
- 2500w 12v ALLSPARK Pure Sine Wave Inverter
offroadliving.com.au/collecti...
- 225w ALLSPARK Solar Blanket (mine is 200w, but this is a new model)
offroadliving.com.au/collecti...
- Enerdrive 40a DCDC charger
- Victron BMV 712 Battery Monitor
This trip relied heavily on solar, 2 of my panels did not perform well and conditions were not favourable.
Bare in mind that every setup, and every persons power needs are going to be totally different. This is not my normal style of camping, and my vehicle is not really set up for extended periods with such large power demands.
My 12v setup supports running large power hungry devices, but to do that really requires moving every day or other day to recharge my battery bank - that is how I normally travel, and it works perfectly as designed. To stay stationary for longer periods really requires a larger battery bank and more solar, but that means more weight and bulk!

We carry a portable induction cooktop (nuwave) and can't fault it. Anytime we are travelling over corrugations it gets packed in a padded bag. We also have experience with a portable $50 no-name induction cooktop and again works like a dream. We only have a small battery setup by todays standard, 200ah lithium battery, 300 watts of solar and a 2000W inverter. If the days are sunny and you are travelling, all is good with the world. Otherwise, if staying put for a few days as you have done in overcast and windy weather, we would revert to the gas cooktop inside the caravan. Looking forward to the new caravan setup.

Our own experience with solar and induction cooking while touring is that to buy quality solar panels and blankets is a must. The induction mistake you may have made Cam is getting the induction hob built in. Keep the hob portable and wrap in a bag to store while traveling. Ours is stored in the chairs that we carry, that gives a padded environment to cushion corrugation damage. Also just buy an ikea or kmart off the shelf fairly cheap hob.

Yeah I’d agree with all of the above. I have the Kmart induction cooker and it’s a much better unit. I just hoped the built in induction cooker would perform as well- as it was a much more convenient and elegant solution. I’ll probably go back to a solid bench and a portable induction cooker 👍🏼

We have 2 induction cookers, we got a set from Nuwave, the PIC gold and the reflex. They have variable power usage, you can set 900, 1500 and 2000 watts. Having the 900 watt option reduces the power usage. They do online specials, we paid $349 and got both, a frypan and an adaptor plate for non induction pans. More expensive than the Kmart, but can’t complain.

Couple of used residential solar panels with a stand/bracket on the back to angle them correctly would be a better solution than the blankets. Blankets suck, and you can find used residential panels pretty cheap on ebay. Not ideal if you're moving around heaps but for a trip like this where you are still for 10 days, might as well set up a decent array. Or use gas haha!

Wrap the pan with a winter sweater for inductive stove it will be much more efficient and you can run it at Lower power. You can save 30% energy. If you're not frying anything,only boiling soup should be safe. At your own risk, there is a chance that sweater might catch on fire if temperatures go too high

Cam, I went fishing on Nth Stradbroke Is for three days and tested my 200ah Lithium with DCDC charger, 120w slimline solar panel on canopy roof and 2000w inverter etc. I was using a Westinghouse induction cooker to boil water and cook, a toaster and a milk frother, fridge, lights and charged phones. I didn’t drive much and got down to 30% charge. I think induction is great for touring but if you’re stationary you need to supplement with a gas store or camp fire oven. I keep my induction cooker in an ARB cargo bag with some padding to protect it when not in use. Thanks for the video. Very good info.

Yeah that’s pretty much my experience too. Which is great, because 90% of my trips I’m driving somewhere every other day! This one was just particularly troublesome because we had several days of cloudy weather, we were parked up for 10 days AND there were no campfires allowed!

I had an induction setup, my main problem was when I wanted to camp in the same spot and not drive I could never seem to keep my battery fully charged. Also another problem I had is that when I cooked a big dinner the next morning I would never be able to make any breakfast. For the reason I have gone back to a gas cook top, I still have my lithium setup bur that is just to charger 230v devices and run the air fryer.

I got a 70v 300w solar panel from australia thats got etfe coating.. no controller $745 posted.. If I have it flat on the ground as it doesn't have its own stands.. And have it at a range of 10m from the controller using 4mm2 solar cable on a day like you have I get 300w with 21.40amps going into the battery.. If I lay it on a stand at an angle I get 26 amps into the battery. On a cloudy day as in the sun is totally behind the clouds I get 10 amps into the battery.. Good ole high voltage. Im building a custom camper trailer.. Currently only got a enerdrive 40+ dcdc and victron 100/30 smart controller for the portable solar.. as for the enerdrive I got thick enough cable to set it to 50 amps to charge the battery if needed.. currently, I only have a 140ah lithium battery but planning on getting 2x 300ah lithium battery setup and on the custom rooftop tent I designed and my dad made I'll have 3x 200w panels in series so 78v at 600w to produce max 53amps though I will max it at 50 amps mainly cause I'd rather just get a 100/50 vicrton controller over the 150/60 controller cause its a massive saving.. But in total I'll have 900w solar and I may get another 300w 70v solar blanket later on.. But pretty much on a good day I'd be looking at max 74 amps into the battery and on cloudy day about 20-25 amps. I could easy do induction and id go with the safari 2000w double one but I've also thinking about the air fryer also.. I like the travel buddy and uses less amps but the size just looks too small compared to air fryers .. and with a 600ah battery bank with up to 400amp discharge, 100amp charge I could get a pretty nice airfryer with a good size.. or even better a instantpot with airfryer function.

Good vid mate. I will be absolutely be going air fryer and induction cooktop. I think the life of your battery will not exceed 10 years. The cells have about a 10 year life max and they may have been a year or more old before they were put in the battery you purchased. Also, it looked like you have a shadow on your panel on the roof. As soon as there is a shadow covering cells, you lose considerable power.

Are you sure induction stove is efficient? I would think that direct heating stove is better option, specially rice cooker, because it kind of keeps the heat inside the heating pan. With rice cooker you can cook food. Slow cooker will be the best option, specially if you wrap it with winter sweater to contain the heat. You can run that off of solar.

This was fun to watch the honesty, with an electrical background I know what works and doesn't, Induction cooktops are a delicate piece of equipment, they and most non off-road designed electrical equipment will fail when hard mounted as the sensitive electronics will fail under corrugations etc, these things are designed to be stationary on a kitchen benchtop, go for portable induction like the IKEA, so you can safely pack it away when finished either inside the cab or some sort of foam etc so it absorbs the shocks, kings electrical stuff failing, say no more, their stuff is built to a price it all fails sooner or later, pay the extra and get a decent brand it will keep working long after the cheap stuff has failed and left you without power.

Ive found with induction the type of pan is even more important then gas, ive got one of those square fry pans you use (smartspace or w/e its called) and i find the temp control with it is difficult because of its aluminium body + steel base, where if i use a scanpan or tefal which has a heavy base and is all stainless i can control the temp more consistantly. I just use the kmart portable induction plates which has 200w increments.

When u put the allspark on u got 6 amps or so, when u put yhe kings on u got 2 amps... when u joined them both u got bout 9 or 10 amps. Seemed to be working well enough. Are ur solar panels in series or parallel? Can u elaborate as i always thought as long as the panels were parallel it was all good on 12v systems. Ur enerdrive dc charger can accept up to like 45v of solar ?
@WildTouring
@WildTouring 2 года назад
My understanding is it’s not good practice to wire different size (voltage or current) panels in series or parallel. In series the arrays total current is determined by the panel with the lowest current rating. In parallel as I did in this video is an issue when panel voltage differs. The total voltage of the array is determined by the panel with the lowest voltage rating. It made little difference here because both panels were pretty close (19v/19.8v), but I thought I’d mention it in the vid, because it can make a big difference in some situations.

Can, I watched your video with great interest, with the induction Failure I believe that you have condemned this process prematurely. We have used induction for a long time and have not had issues, I must say ours has several heat settings from 60-240 degrees Celsius. It would be better to throw away the ice maker, you make ice in the fridge. By the way ZB133. You should have bought the Zone

BTW, If it is cool enough you do not need ice in your drink… so no need to use your ice machine …save power. If it’s cold or wet, drink your spirits straight !!! Clear skies!!

Shame about your induction cooker. Rather than replacing the slide out bench, you could get a custom chopping board/block made to fill the hole where the cooker currently is. Or even a removable basket / bin to slide scraps and off cuts into while preparing meals. Just a thought instead of spending heaps replacing the slide out bench.

This seems like an insane stress test on such a small battery. 150ah is about as small as you can get and your running a fridge, ice maker, induction cook-top, air fryer, and lights accessories off of it AND you had bad luck with weather for your solar system. For me I'd kick out the ice maker (fridge would make this mostly redundant) and either induction or air fryer (not sure why both are needed) and also double up on battery (two in parallel). More power less demand
@WildTouring

You're not wrong. Big ask from a system that wasn't designed or sized to run those loads. But like I said, this type of camping is unusual for me (staying in one place without moving for over a week). It wouldn't be economic to spend money on a larger system for the 1 trip in 2 years that pushed it to the limits...
