13 Ghosts: Revisiting Early 2000s Horror

Welcome to the early 2000s, when horror was loud in your face, and you were not worried about a thing! Horror fans were spoiled with regular theatrical releases happening, so much so that some weeks saw more than one big horror title opening on the big screen simultaneously. Fans were treated to everything, including serial killers, slashers, ghosts, and aliens. There was a bit of everything for everyone, but in pure early 2000s style, a lot of films were all style, all gore, and all fun. This was the only way to follow the late 1990s and their revival of many sub-genres and careers. Thir13en Ghosts was, and still is, easily one of the most enjoyable entries from 2001, with gory, spooky, sexy ghosts throughout and a fun cast to go with it.

I always look forward to seeing Matthew Lillard in a project, since even if it's awful or mediocre, he gives it his all anyway. He was the best thing about "He's All That", despite only appearing in a few brief scenes as the principal.

Love this movie. We need need more Matthew Lillard. I remember this came out around the same time as Ghost Ship, me and my family loved going Blockbusters and picking 3 movies to watch over the weekend, and in particular i rememeber these two movies. I think if made now, this could be awesome. The house was and still is amazing. The dvd special features went into further details about each ghost, that was great!

I never understood the hate this film got back in the day.. it got lumped in with all the other sub par horror coming out in the early 2000's.. but it's always been a favorite of mine and Lillard's performance is (as usual) an over the top stand out of awesome. I am glad it's been getting more praise in the last couple years.

The one thing I would urge those who haven't seen the film, is to get the DVD, and watch the special feature, where we get a better look at the ghosts, and also their back stories. When I saw this in the theater, they were just a bunch of blurs. When I later saw the backstories, and learned about the ghosts, I enjoyed the film more.

The fact that thirteen ghosts was never made into a franchise blows my mind. Like you said, you already have 13 movies worth of story to tell right out of the gate. Not to mention all the news stories that could be spun off of those. What a missed opportunity. But, since nostalgia is so popular and bringing things back from the past is so popular right now, perhaps a smart movie executive would have the good idea to dig this franchise out of the grave for another round of scares. And sequels two decades-old movies are all the rage right now. We already have thirteen ghosts as the springboard, so bring all the universe! I think the horror community would blow up if it was announced that they were bringing back 13 ghosts and doing an entire franchise/universe with it.

I absolutely love this film. It's cheesy fun. And come on, Matthew Lillard chewing the scenery is always worth the price of admission. Then there's Tony Shalhoub before Monk and after Wings, so neat transition for him. Oh, and I love how they're so broke and desperate yet they have a full time nanny and an apartment most city folk would kill for.

All media is subjective. I for sure do not laud this film as much as the host here, but it is a guilty pleasure to watch during Halloween or once a year. IDK I am 37 and it is a little harder for me to get into this at this point in my life. It was corny as hell in some way, but again still a guilty pleasure w/ the way over the top acting.

It was definitely a product of its time but if I had worked on it, I'd be 100% proud of it! Love the ghost's back stories in the special feature area. I know I'm not the first to say this, but I'd love it if Netflix did a one season run of it, maybe featuring each ghost with a tie-in to Cyrus and the Lillard character gathering them.

I also own this movie on DVD. And yes, it is fun for what it is but could have been so much more. Using the same premise the movie could have been a real scary movie or keep the same vibe HOWEVER made use of the entire ghosts (as there are some that one would wish to see more of and others that were barely shown) and have used more of the house as well. Even the Special Features on the DVD tells you the incredible backstories of the ghosts...all for nothing.

I wish they'd do a 10 episode series (maybe half hour episodes) that covers the life and death of each ghost (the mother and son could be done in the same episode and we don't need a story of the wife/withered lover since she and the husband/"13th ghost" had their story told in the film)

Hollywood missed a HUGE opportunity with making a spinoff franchise with The Juggernaut: Horace "Breaker" Mahoney as the next great slasher. His backstory was one of the best. A mentally disfigured 7 foot monster of a man, bigger and stronger than Jason. Goes crazy after his father passed away. And then with no one to guide him from right and wrong, he becomes a vicious serial killer. One who uses no tools to kill his victims. Nothing other than his BARE HANDS!! Breaking every bone in their bodies. And then feeding the leftovers to his dogs. If that's not a franchise of it's own, idk what is! Instead we got 'See No Evil' with WWE's KANE. 🤷🏾‍♂️

With this opening scene in this super-natural automotive junk yard with F Murray Abraham (Joshua) and Matthew Lillard (Scooby Doo) and some pretty good bloody Gore FX at the very Start and you know you are in for something cool. Although seemingly miscast with Tony Shalhoub (Monk) is almost a distraction in the beginning turns out to give a pretty decent believable performance. The Ghosts (creature FX) in 13 Ghosts are awesome in this movie. Extremely cool and extremely under-rated horror movie. Check it out.

I watched The Rocky Horror Picture Show there in '93 during my CEJEP days and people were reenacting scenes from the screen real time, throwing toast, water squirters etc. it was wild. I think they handed out glasses at the theaters, but it was on tv when I got wind of it and it scared me bc I was 9. My big sister called it a comedy, and I stared at her without comprehension. I’ve seen it since, and she was right. This version, more blood. Cooler glasses. More Monk; less Adam-12. Nice take.
